Only choose to go up via the north ridge of Tryfan if you are an experienced hiker with good navigational skills and a head for heights. It is a technical mountain and not for beginners or the faint hearted. There are routes on the south side which are easier and less of a steep scramble. As a local who follows the Mountain Rescue Team the number of rescues from Tryfan is no joke, and many are due to people becoming lost or crag bound as well as injuries. This is a mountain to be taken seriously and not climbed just because you’ve seen it on RU-vid.

People love gate keeping mountains. I did the north ridge in bad weather with no experience and it wasn’t at all difficult.
@RabJ123

@@josephblackhall no one is gate keeping mountains. However, it pays to understand the risks in the mountains, the risks associated with particular routes, including slippery rock, loose rock and weather patterns. Have good navigation skills, the right kit/clothing and know how to use it. It's absolutely true about Tryfan's reputation, watch the BBC series 'SOS: Extreme Rescues', there are fatalities and serious injuries each year. @wendyallison7933 is local and locals are always worth listening to, they know the score. Don't die of ignorance or worse still let your bravado give false confidence to another who is ill prepared and ill informed or put volunteer MR team members at avoidable risk. Respect the mountains, the sea and the wilderness for they will always beat you when your confidence gets the better of you.

Glad you had a great day out......some of you guys would of been better of wearing proper climbing equipment. I the weather gets realy bad one of you could have become that person needing rescuing. Just advice from an older guy enjoy your time in the mountains as safe as you can.

Please do your research into drone use in the area, drone's are not allowed at all on Tryfan, if you check the National Trust land map it clearly shows you where they can't be used, they're also not allowed on any busy routes or summits where they're deemed a significant risk to public safety.
@uranusskies
@uranusskies 4 месяца назад
Public safety? They’re not military drones my dude 😂
@markjones127
@markjones127 4 месяца назад
@@uranusskies In busy areas the risk of there being multiple drones in the same air space is much higher which increase the risk of collisions, that's why the national park state no drone use around busy summits etc. Also the local mountain rescue helicopter is based at the foot of Tryfan and Tryfan itself is a rescue hotspot for the helicopter, I mean it's a 100% no fly zone for drone's at any time, so that says it all really.
@RabJ123
@RabJ123 4 месяца назад
@@markjones127 just for clarity the HM Coastguard Bristow S-92 search and rescue helicopter, which covers Eryri is based at Caernarfon Airport. HM Coastguard can also deploy drones, which reinforces the need for compliance with the National Trust drone prohibition, which you quite rightly point out to those who are only concerned with their wants and needs or have no idea of the big picture or the risks involved. The Ogwen MR base is very close to Tryfan on the A6. The HM Coastguard may well collect team members from 'Oggie base', landing on or close to the base.
@flymoracer
@flymoracer 2 месяца назад
@@RabJ123 for further clarity, the restriction is nothing to do with the risk of emergency helicopter flights. Drone flyers are aware that we must be conscious of all other aircraft wherever we fly. The risk is entirely dependent on the weight of the drone. The smallest (sub 250g) drones are so light that there are no CAA restrictions even for flying over people, with the exception of a crowd, defined as a group of people that are prevented (by the density of the crowd) from moving to safety from a falling drone. The same could be argued for parts of the mountains where people have restricted ability to move out of the way, such as a narrow path or mountain summit. The NT can request that you don't fly a drone over Eryri, but they cannot force you to stop as it is publicly accessible land with no restricted access. Parts of Eryri are listed as a yellow flying zone for drones, which simply means there is a 'hazard' that flyers must be aware of, it does not prevent flying. The two remaining considerations are a public disturbance of such a beautiful area and the potential effect on wildlife. Having a drone hovering around 10m above your head on an otherwise peaceful summit is annoying, but a small drone 50m up, I doubt you'd even hear it. So it comes down to consideration on behalf of the drone flyers and a small level of tolerance from other walkers. We can share the mountains positively, and drones can be a part of that.

Fun fact: there is no such thing as “on route” unless you’re from Yorkshire. The term “enroute” is borrowed from French.

First time up Tryfan then across to Bristly Ridge (another great scramble) we watched 2 walkers get winched off Bristly Ridge about 200ft beneath us, not far from Sinister Gully. Reading the report online later, they had tried to avoid the ridge to the east side and found themselves into a tenuous situation. They didnt feel there was a safe route down and were faced with a extremely steep ascent. One of them then suffered a minor leg injury and they were stuck on a shelf, so whistled. One of them looked dead when we watched him winched up - the report said he had passed out. If you're on Tryfan North Ridge and Bristly Ridge try and stick to right to the apex of the ridge, diverting east can get you into a bad spot. It was sobering looking on the mountain rescue website for the incident, as you realise how many people have to get taken off or suffer severe injury on those 2 beautiful hunks of rock. Next time we went up we were a bit less cavalier.

I really enjoyed this video. Really great footage of one of my favourite mountain routes. However I must point out that the biggest cause of accidents in the mountains is people wearing inappropriate footwear. People wearing trainers are accidents waiting to happen.Your mate in the red jacket nearly slips at 7.10. Please be aware of this and that videos showing people in trainers leads others into thinking they are ok. I spent a lifetime in the mountains and hope you guys get as much pleasure from them as I did. You all clearly have a natural ability and in other ways seemed well kitted out. Have fun, keep making the videos and best wishes to you allbut please stay safe.

So you claim that boots dont slip or slip less than trainers? Because when my la sportivas kaptivas slip ill probably eat them. Boots are a tool, and vast majority of boots slip more than trainers. They are needed for snowshoes, crampons, and carrying a pack. Boots for a hike? no thanks.
@simonrangeley
@simonrangeley 10 месяцев назад
7.18 your mate slipped. Your comment was "you really had me worried ". La sportivas are great for easy scrambling but I'm pretty sure that some of your mates were just wearing normal trainers. Mountain Rescue records show that inadequate footwear is the number 1 cause of accidents. As someone with over 40 years of experience in the mountains I was simply offering some friendly advice. Best wishes
@RabJ123
@RabJ123 4 месяца назад
@@mezmerya5130 there are technical reasons why you want stiffer soled boots/trail shoes when scrambling on the likes of slippery, greasy rock on Tryfan. The flex of a trainer is an accident waiting to happen. Not having the knowledge to make the correct decisions for your safety and that of others, including Mountain Rescue volunteers calls for humility and a desire learn what you don't know you don't know. Adventurous activity is great but understand the risks, that way you know when to change the route or turn back and return another day, rather than ploughing on towards oblivion.

Need some good boots for the grip. Too risky to be climbing in gym / running trainers in my opinion. I use a good pair of boots for less technical, and my La Sportivas for more technical. You’ll not regret.
