Trying a Saracens Monk Rush From 2001 

(heyven here) i think you would have easily won with a few tweaks, i think you should do a series in which you update really old build orders (like adding deer luring and stuff) it could even add a few new metas to the game, which i know youd love.

Hello, I used to play Age of Empires even before The Conquerors expansion, when the Teutons town center had +5 range and didn't cost stone. It was considered unfair play, and if someone selected Teutons, everyone would quit the game. I remember this build; the reason for gathering berries early was to have enough food to advance to the Castle Age. It was a balance between sheep and boar to have food for the Feudal Age while collecting berries early to avoid over-saturation. The bottleneck usually was obtaining enough food for the Castle Age without needing to build farms. We used sheep for scouting, but we didn't lure deer. The distribution of initial resources on the map was like a lottery, and having an idle town center in the Dark Age was common due to taking too long to find the sheep, another reason to research Loom early after the initial 4 villagers or even go to berries e switch to sheep asap.

Not sure about 2001 but when my classmates and I used to play this game ~2004-05 and watched some high-level recorded games from that time period, scouting with sheep was common practice.

Re: Forward vills without loom. I can’t remember when it changed, but scouts initially did not gain the +1 attack upon reaching feudal. 2 unloomed vills could usually beat a scout.

Maybe it would be a fun thing to do a part 1 video where you follow the build exactly like this and then a part 2 video where you create a modern version of that build that would be competitive in todays meta

my favorite series on youtube! i used to play on msn gaming zone and we did explore with sheep but usually with a lot of idle time lol. would be nice if you use a smurf account to see how far you can get with these old masterpieces and also to preserve your points. keep up pleaaase

I remember playing the demo and seeing you could scout with sheep was one of the coolest things ever. They were like artifacts that you could eat!

Hmm if you adapted it to modern lack of lag, you could push the deer and make 2 extra vills in feudal for stronger eco and continue making vills in castle when you have food (but priority goes to affording monks). I can see it working pretty well honestly but meso are definitely the toughest matchup. Old eagles weren't as strong in feudal -> castle transition iirc.

back then it worked better as no one went scouts, as scouts didn't get hp and atack when you age up to feudal

I think it would be interesting also to 'modernise' some of these. So keep the all in saracen rush, but add deer pushing etc to make it up to date. A 'modern' all in trash build might be fun too

back in 2001 you wouldnt of had to deal with eagle scouts cause they werent a thing, only had eagle warriors once you hit castle age .

Maybe the berries thing is to be more consistent, as sheep back in the day spawned really far away from the tc?

I think redemption was key here to convert the military buildings - you could not afford it in time, but imagine if you could... then basically not much eagles ;-)

you forgot to be patient, it wasnt about the micro, the build works on sheer scale. Its a classic. Its not about rushing it, it works on lierally having more walls/unstoppable pushing power.

There was no feudal eagles in 2001.

Maimin' Matty originated the Monk rush and I was one of the people he fine tuned it on.

maybe adding a tower for monks hop forwarding, back then ppl would still do that

I swear i saw a guy that tried this with aztecs in casual matches, i raided with light cavalry and archers (was playing italians) and his villagers didn't have loom.

Pretty sure pop cap back then was 50. 100 tops. So that's probably a factor too.
