Very true. A friend gave me this same one and a few others. I was moving to another county back in 2009. They were left and forgotten in my car for about 5mth. Things got crazy with the move. I went back to my home town. 578 miles away. There was a horrible freeze/snow storm about 250 miles in. My car froze up and left me on the road for 71 HOURS! No one could get to me. I had my dog as well. I did stop and load up a cooler with water and sodas for the trip. I was only 45 miles from my hotel. Fortunately I had blankets that were my dogs and all her goodies for the stay in my home town. Her food and such. I did have extra clothing. But not really any food for me. I was moving this around to sleep while waiting on help and the roads to clear. I found the MRES!!! LOL this was the one I ate first. Not bad at all. I've never been so excited to find missing items in my life. Lol

The trick with the heater is to put salt in before the water, and shake it all up until it's hard to hold with the cardboard sleeve, then prop it up mostly flat (just at enough of an angle to keep the water in) with the heating element below the meal. Knead the package as much as you can manage until you feel it become more smooth, almost like a liquid. Let it cool a bit, and enjoy. My favorite one is chili with beans, do the above with it and crumble some cornbread in and it can turn a bad, rainy field op into a slightly less bad, rainy field op

Every hurricane we get here in Louisiana, I make a fire, & cook all of the meat we have, and everything else that I have time to, without wasting food. However, after a week with no power, anything in the fridge is bad, but the power and water can stay off for several weeks. This has happened several times in my life, and the MREs are really good at that time.

add salt to the water before adding it. I think for whatever reason the salt that is in them cakes up, or was removed, or they are sourcing them from shitty suppliers. It almost always makes them functional again. and the MRE comes with more than enough salt to power the reaction in the seasoning/accessory bag.

Me and a friend and his dad bought like 2 or 3 boxes of MREs for a road trip. They were actually pretty good, downside is that we got the ones like spaghetti or ravioli, his dad would get maple syrup paddy or hash browns. I've tried a bunch, I honestly enjoy them as a meal but that means you won't shit for a good min. Also wanted to add that those heating pads either never worked or worked too well to the point of seeing a lot of steam, heat, and fizzing noises. First time, I thought it was about to explode

My dad used to bring home MRE's from work when I was a kid, and we'd eat them for fun at the kitchen table sometimes... almost all of them were gross, except for some of the pasta or stew options. The beef stew was pretty decent. My favorite parts were always the giant square cracker, which was ridiculously hard and dry, and the teeny-tiny glass bottle of tobasco sauce. Those mini bottles of tobasco are a lot harder to find in MRE's these days; now they come in small packets, like ketchup does. One day my husband (while prepping his lunch in the field) found one of these tiny bottles. He saved it for me and brought it home, and I keep it, unopened, in my spice cupboard. 😊

Lots of people complain about MRE's. They arn't the tastiest meals, but after some days of working and living in the field, I found a lot of the MRE's to actually be quite comforting, filling, and delicious. The one time I truly dispised eating those things was when we lived off of MRE's for just shy of three months in Iraq. I've been wanting to get a couple of them lately to try what the soldiers are eating these days, and to also break through the quarter year MRE experience trauma. Lol

Your spaghetti didn't warm up cuz you need to close the heater pouch so the steam created stays inside, otherwise all the steam will escape... Once you fill up the bag with water and fold the end, insert the heater pouch inside the box the food came in (right side up!) As the bag expands, the box will also keep it from exploding on you and yes, it's happened to many of us! Enjoy... Love the content! Hail Lord Minion!!!
