@@phaedragardeness ah that makes sense now, my dahlias are all sprouted and getting flower heads, yippee. I lifted them for the first time over winter, after watching your vlog thank you 🙏, I even dived them 🥳. Iam growing them for myself and to make my backyard pretty.
Good morning Phaedra, Oh yes the weather in Australia has been very odd one day hot the next cool also and today is Saturday and it is overcast. I have noticed that most of the fruit is going new fruit and the best thing is I'm keep on watching the grapes grow as I have never seen it before. Take care and God Bless love from Nanette (Nettie)
You’re so right about the weather Phaedra, everything is pretty messed up these days and so unpredictable. I’m on the Central Coast of NSW and we’ve had summer temps here since September began, which I absolutely hate, and we’ve hardly had any frost all year as we basically skipped winter. I hope your plants with frost damage survived. xx
Hi Sharon, wow didn’t know you got frost there! But if you usually do and it didn’t happen this winter that’s going to mess up a few plants :(. Summer temps in Spring yuck!
@@phaedragardeness yeah our winters were never as cold as other places being coastal, but we did have frosts. Our car’s windshield was iced over one morning, but the winter temps in general were more autumnal, so temperature-wise this year was more like summer-spring-autumn-summer. It’s been awful having 30+ degree days in September and October, and It’s no wonder the plants are confused. I had some spring flowers blooming in June and July😳🌷
Whether entirely earned or not, a lot of those sellers boost their own reputation as having beautiful/desirable dahlias throughout the season, build up a hype around their tuber sales, and that’s how they manage to sell out.
That’s probably true.. I didn’t really do that did I! I would say I’ll keep mine fairly small and curated for cut flowers and not list everything (or keep the really detailed descriptions like I did this year so buyers have an idea of vase life and growth habits etc before buying). That would have helped me so much to know those things before I purchased some varieties!
I sell my extra dahlia tubers as prestarted plants. Here where I live, so many people sell their extra tubers on Facebook marketplace ridiculously cheap, it is not worth competing. Selling them as already hardened off plants however, that's a different story.
I wonder if the sale didnt go as well because theyre mystery packs. I know when I buy tubers I want to know the colors, the shape, if theyre best for cutflowers or for the landscape, etc. If it was just a light frost they should send up new shoots. I have had tyat happen before. Ive also had some in grow bags that I let dry up a little too much, & the shoots wilted & died, but then they sent up brand new shoots.
Oh wow ok great I love thought they would grow again but it’s just so anxiety provoking thinking what if they don’t!!! Originally the sale was all the individual tubers and they sold. And I ended up selling more mystery packs since setting those up. I only have 4 packs left so that’s pretty good :)
Phaedra I put chicken wire over my sunflowers and it seems to save them. They get the sun and no critters eat them. The Seed Collection sell Dahlias and you don’t have to fight over them like other sites. The weather is crazy indeed I can never remember putting the heater on in the middle of October .
Thankyou Liz! I want to come to Texas, I haven’t made it there yet but fingers crossed in the next few years. Seems like an intriguing state, and seems like pretty down to earth people there too.
Bunnings hat all the way. I think I'm due for a new one myself, it's a bit warped haha. I am well and truly finished my tuber shopping unfortunately, I had dahlias sprouting 2 months ago up here in QLD. Naturally I have more than will fit into the bed and now I have to find spots for them elsewhere....
I’ve done the same… I want to take another row for them 😂. Moroni loves the idea though he loves dahlias. Yep ours are well and truely waking up and wanting to do their thing!!
I would say it would definitely be the cockatoos biting of your plants, they love to come in and just bite things of for the fun of it especially sunflowers.
@@phaedragardeness they are definitely a hard pest to keep away, might have to put up something to try scare them away, if you can scare them of enough times in a row they get pretty to scared to come back eventually. I'm having trouble with rabbits for the first time, even though there aren't meant to be rabbits in Qld 🤔 the good seasons we had the last few seasons must have got the numbers up.
I’m watching this a few days late but I love the idea of a curated collection of great cut flower dahlias. If you have any more to sell, I’m definitely interested!! I think use this as an advertising point too as I think more people than you think would like the idea of this
Don't look at the camera 😂 Hoping you didn't lose any dahlias to the frost. Mine are finally starting to bloom, my first frost is in a few weeks. I'll be filling the dahlia holes with bulbs, my back hurts just thinking about it, but knowing what spring will look like, it's all worth it. You guys have a nice weekend.
So exciting to see you posting the orders!! Now I am extra excites to be checking the mailbox this week!! My guess is that James got in and mixed up all the well organised and labelled tubers you had for sale hence why you can now only sell them as myserty packs!! 🤦♀️
Hi Phaedra! I was going to buy some individual Dahlia Tubers from you but had a busy week with work and didn’t get around to ordering until yesterday. I have ordered a mystery pack so will have to put in some more garden beds now. Oh well. Nice problem to have! 😂
Oh oops!! Haha. Well…. It’s not my favourite platform that’s for sure BUT it’s the only one with a card reader at this stage so I kind of feel like it’s the best most versatile option for now. As soon as Wordpress release a card reader I’ll probably jumó ship.
Loved the "Think Tank Mktg Strategy meeting" you and James were having. Mktg is a beast of its own and researching all that myself atm. I actually thought you did quite well with your sale. Did not know about the "eye" things on tubers, always learing something new from you. Was quite humid yesterday here, had to put the fan on. 😉😉🙃🙃
We have matching hats! First sales can always be a challenge. There is SO much to organise (I usually lose lots of sleep over it). The more experience you have, the easier it gets so don’t give up. Reflect, revise and re-try! Joining heaps of social media dahlia sites will help! Tip - we always take a photo of each order prior to shipping. 😊
Thanks Caitie 🤍. Yes I took photos of all the orders before they were packed!! And I’ve already had to use one of those photos as proof to someone who tried to complain I sent bad stock! It’s unbelievable to me! I was thinning that too- this was a good first run! X
Actually… I may have done that 😬. Some sold out and I marked the rest sold out. Something happened. So now it’s just mystery boxes. I’ll explain next video.
