The taste of the candy from 1895 is rowanberries and the animal on the front is a fox. It comes from a fable of Aesop about fox and rowanberries (originally grapes) and a proverb "Sour, said the fox about rowanberries" is known both in Finland and Sweden (and possibly other Nordic countries too).

Salmiak is only eaten, in significant quantities, in the Nordic countries, the Netherlands, and parts of the northern Germany. It's very much something you either have to grow up with or acclimate yourself to stubbornly since the taste comes from ammonium chloride (salt of ammoniac), which, in most of the world, ought to sound like something belonging to fertilisers or chemical industry, not in people's stomach. As unique a taste in food as you can get. Some people with no prior experience do like it instantly, though. Like most Finns, I appreciate it. I also love watching RU-vid videos where foreigners taste it for the first time. That never gets old.

Fazer is a confectionary, bakery and restaurant company started in 1891 by Karl Fazer. Despite it's size it still is an independent family business which is pretty rare in todays global world, especially in food industry.

It's private only due to the creediness of the family. They don't care anyhing else but keeping it their own money-spinner so they don't have to do a thing. I'm glad that you were honest. There was one Canadian video what got it's comment section raided by Finnish people because they just disrespected Finnish candy.

USA has very different tasting Chocolate... and USA specifically. I've herd people describe the taste of American chocolate disgusting due to having something weird in it. Not all of the chocolates but the classic ones.

TY for bringing your kids too here in Finland. If U have some sparetime, try to rent cottage on seaside or lake, there U can really feel what is that peace and quiet what we Finns like so much. (Ps. take everything what U might need with U, cause it's hard to get anything in middle of nowhere.. but I can promise, that it would be experience to live thru and memorizing later ) and by the way pihlaja (rowan) is made from berrys of that tree. oh and by the way, if your kids like minced meat and sausages(next product contains a little of it) you'll have to try lihapiirakka with 1-2 nakki (sold from little kiosks at evenings, you'll smell that greese from a far...) seasonings usually mustard, ketchup, mayo etc. if wanted.. better than big mac :)

11:39 U.S. born and raised Finn here. Of all these, this is the one I remember from childhood. Always at Christmas time. ( likely not easy to get in the US at the time (1960s)) Just in the last couple of years we found a store that imports them, and a Christmas tradition has been renewed. 😀

As others have pointed out, must have been something horribly wrong with the Fazer Blue you had, as it doesn't really resemble Hershey's at all really, but might if gone bad or smth :).

Pihlaja, is a rowan berry candy. Also called Kettukarkki (fox candy) as the illustration looks like a fox. I keep stack of those on my office table to ward off that sugar hunger. Less sweet but does the trick.

An honest review, I like it a lot 👍. You have a wonderful family. To me, Fazer's blue tastes like mixture of milk and dark choco. Fazer's red might be better option, it's more smooth and tastes like a classic milk chocolate.

Pihlaja is rowan in Finnish. They're also known as foxcandy. In Finland we joke that they're grandma candies, 'cause all the grandmas have them in their house and nobody seems to like them. Foxcandy has been around since 1895-- so it's old school!

I don't know if you encountered "Pantteri" candies (panther) - the one with all black is really good. It isn't salty kind, and surprisingly changes how beer tastes. I've used those on many occasions to get people realize they actually do like beer. 🙂

My father was a Taffels sales rep in the 1980s and 1990s. We had a warehouse full of Taffels chips which my father gave to his customer grocery stores as samples. Free potato chips in the trunk of the car wasn't quite so good for waistline according to my mom and dad. :P

Great video and lovely kids you have. Salmiakki, there is many different kind of it, salty and regular, soft and hard. Salmiakki hits your back jaw with its taste if its very salty. But enjoying salmiakki with coffee, you'll get tender taste of it.

The chips might be a bit stale. That's one of the reasons why the bags are filled with nitrogen. Japanese people never got offended by Geisha. It was more like a joke by some idiots because for some reason some people take offence to everything, no matter what. It's just a chocolate bar called Geisha.
@mmestari
@mmestari Год назад
Yeah basically no Japanese was offended by it, but some Asian woman lost her modeling job over the fake outrage.
