The way you didn't break that glare at your mom as you slowly shoved the plate away 🤣. "3 More bites?? You're lucky I took 1!"

Perhaps gave it another try but fried it in oil and thinner slices. (Like chips) The yellow ones are sweeter

If you like crunchy textures, you might prefer plantain chips. They come in sweet versions, plain salted, and savory seasoned styles. The plain less sweet version is my favorite, and it's almost like a thicker more starchy potato chip sort of snack.

I love how you describe food. You diss it in the most eloquent way lol. Would love to see more videos of you trying new food, if it isn't too overwhelming. 😊

I agree completely with the "nope, tried it and hate it" thing. I was the pickiest eater as a child, and am still incredibly sensitive to tastes, textures, smells, and consistencies. Most things are crossed off my list for a multitude of reasons. Strawberries have the little crunchies on the outside, for example, and that really bothers me. Grapes with seeds, too, are just too bitter. But I've also learned the beauty of trying new things. My mother is always willing to let me try off her plate, so I never need to commit to eating a meal I don't know if I'll like. Learned that I enjoy sushi, smoked oysters, and artichokes, but dislike Big Macs. Trying new things at your own pace, and not being forced to finish it if you hate it, is a great thing to do.

Also, I used to be expected to finish my plate. I felt like wasting things was rude and an insult. I remember being asked to take "just one more bite", and even if it was something I liked, when I was done, I was done. Now I have healthy boundaries with food, I don't eat it if I don't like it.

@@alexconnor6456 Oh gosh I remember being sat at the table for hours as I was supposed to 'finish my plate'. At school it was worse. Sitting inside with a plate of food in front of me, which I was never going to eat, and all the other children had gone out to play. I liked the puddings but they wouldn't let me have any. After a while my mother gave me packed lunches, with things she knew I would eat. I think she thought I would eat because all the other children were eating!

when growing up, my mum used to cook this for the whole family. fried plantain, eggs sunny side up, thick back bacon, Heinz beans and buttered toast. best Saturday breakfast ever. i kinda like the plantain fried in bacon grease

You have to have it prepared like the desert it is meant to be. 😂😅 it has to be baked like a cake or French toast lmao. I can almost guarantee, you would die for the way I make them ^-^ I'm that confident as a fellow arfid.

Im potato intolerant and these make a great hash brown sub if you grate them while they are super green, and smash them into thin patties, salt or season and fry them till golden brown. They stick together better than potatoes too. Sweet plantains however are not my jam, grosses me out if my plantains are even a little bit ripe lol

It's good to keep trying if only the teeniest bite. I know a boy that only ate yellow food until he was at least 20. Now he eats a ton of things that are all sorts of colors.

You should try tostones! They are the fried green plantains, and they're eaten salty, very much like a round french fry but more "vegetably." I like them way better than sweet plantains.

as a person who has, in almost 95% certainty of me and my mother, went undiagnosed with ARFID his entire life, i’m connecting with these reactions. all of them. i would have done the same. i’m going to see some medical professionals some time in the near future to get a possible diagnosis, don’t know when at all though.

My sentiments exactly, Toren, when it comes to fried plantains. I can’t even imagine (don’t even want to) what they taste like without being fried - just raw. 🤮

It’s better if you fry sweet plantains in olive oil like a deep fry with a tad bit of salt

I think maybe they might not have been ripe enough. Your description made them sound like something was wrong with them. My apologies to the chef, but fried plantains don't taste like that. They are VERY sweet and caramelized from the sugar in the fruit. Plantains are cooked sweet or savory. The skin (outer peel) on the mature, sweet variety should be black. You slice them and cook them in oil (some people use lard). The green plantains are almost like a thick, starchy potato chip. You slice them like the sweet ones and fry them. The trick is that with the green ones, you remove them from the oil when they are half cooked, then you mash them with a spoon or fork and then put them back in the oil.

I don’t blame you man. Bananas make me gag (smell and textures of bananas are a no go) and plantains are very similar to bananas with texture so it’s once it’s in my mouth I start gagging which is no fun. I do not blame you for not liking it.

Plantains are icky for many people. I can't say it's actually an ARFID thing. I like them but, both my parents hate them. Even the chips. Definitely not a food for the majority.

If plantains are green and fried I like them but ripe fried plantains are vile and nasty... Yuck! But, also I'm not a fan of banana, green ones are a bit more palatable cooked... To me anyways.

is arfid something that has to be diagnosed? or is a general self diagnosis of avoiding multiple foods and maintaining safe foods for years enough to say you have arfid? i feel this is something i have and people tell me i don’t because i *can* eat something else, its not that i can or can’t, its just so uncomfortable even if it tastes fine
