In this video, I sample snake fruit (salak). Snake fruit is a tropical fruit that grows on a palm tree. It is native to Java and Sumatra in Indonesia. It is also grown in other parts of Southeast Asia, such as Thailand.
I tried snake fruit in Bali. I bought 4 of them in a supermarket in Ubud for 5580 Rupiah or $0.35. I had never seen or heard of these before. I saw them in the supermarket and bought them to try them out. When I first saw these, I thought they were some type of nut.
Snake fruit has a scaly snake-like skin that is easy to peel with your fingers. They come apart in sections. There is a hard pit in each section.
Snake fruit is firm and crunchy, similar to an apple but even crunchier. It tastes kind of like a pear. Some people think it tastes kind of like similar to pineapple or jackfruit.
I really liked snake fruit. If I saw it again, I would definitely buy some. In this video, I'll show you how to peel and eat snake fruit and I'll share my first impressions eating it.
