The sandwich was first made by the owner of the SBS cafeteria where the staff and kpop idols would eat before going on stage. Inkigayo is the name of the Music show SBS airs. A lot of kpop idols liked the sandwich and since the fans can't eat at the cafeteria, Convenience stores such as 711 and GS25 started selling their own version. Kpop idols also used the sandwich to exchange numbers by unwrapping one side, sliding in their numbers written on a paper and giving it to someone.

"Kpop idols also used the sandwich to exchange numbers by unwrapping one side, sliding in their numbers written on a paper and giving it to someone." This. And for additional context for people unfamiliar with the kpop world - it's more than just attractive young people exchanging numbers. Dating while under contract is considered potentially career-risking (attitudes are loosening lately, but idols still try to keep it discrete). This is due to the perception that idols in relationships will ruin the personal fantasies of their most delusional fans, leading to reduced sales. I don't know if that actually happens, but the worry is so great it's actually written into their contracts - no dating. Senior artists near the end of their careers may get away with it, but not rookie groups. There are literally singers kicked out of the groups they were about to debut with for violating dating bans. But idols are human so of course they date, and this "sandwich note passing" technique is rumored as one way they flirt/hook up without the public's knowledge. It's also an annual tradition that the Korean tabloids "expose" a secretly dating famous couple every New Year's. It's so funny to me that in the west, celebrities will carry on very public yet fake showmances for publicity and clout, but in kpop they keep real relationships hidden.

My brother and I always look forward to your videos but damn we can't watch it unless we have snacks ourselves or else we'd be drooling and screaming (internally) and crying (internally) ! hahaha. Also have you heard of the no pork ichiran ramen spot in Japan? I'd love to see you try it and compare with the regular ichiran! Thanks for being awesome

come to a uk convenience store, you might get food that is actually in date. but realistically its like a prison. low quality junk, and lots of alcohol.

I'm addicted to ordering huge amounts of Korean and Japanese food online. Lolz, i live in Indiana USA, and have like 1 decent Asian market thats almost an hour drive. Grrrr thanks to Mike's videos I've learned so much on what to get, what is tasty,, and i appreciate this so much!! One main thing i must have is seaweed chips. I eat them with anything. I buy them in bulk. Also udon instant cups. They are not cheap online!! But sooooo good!!

Having actually watched the program Inkigayo, I can tell you that the proper pronunciation is: Ink-ee-GUY-oh It's not a bad show. That's how I discovered popular indie bands like Thornapple and Nell. And that, in turn, led me to check out Korean indie labels, which just cause my love of independent Korean artists to grow and flourish into a near-obsession.

Pretty sure for the pudding thing, you're supposed to shake it vigorously to break it up. At least that's how a similar grape-flavored jelly drink I had worked, it was a solid chunk but when you shake it, it falls apart into drinkable pieces.

While I'm incredibly jealous of the amazing array of foods in those stores (beats the hell out of the selections in the UK) I kinda wonder about what it says about a culture where so much effort is spent on convenient meals for one. Seems lonely
@korinakorinakorina
@korinakorinakorina 3 года назад
Sort of true. There are other reasons for it, though. One of them being that convenience stores are a different beast in asian markets. They dont sell gas, so they need to pay attention to the quality of their products. People who are busy, dont know how to cook, live alone and/or may not have a good kitchen (super common for single folks) are all part of the demographic. The competition can be a little more fierce in certain countries too, pushing the need for quality. There is also just more of a standard for how everything is done, especially in countries like Japan. You see a much better work ethic in general and level of pride and care for everything that they do. That's not to bash us western folks, it is just the way it is!
