ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-RS9X4w0P-gY.html. This is my favourite at Hong Lim food centre just near Chinatown MRT. Stall at 02-17.
Goreng pisang (deep fried battered banana) from Toa Payoh, Mee Rebus from Ang Mo Kio.. Kway chap is something more local- innards braised with soy sauce served with thick rice noodles.. Also, there are a few craft breweries about if you’re into beers..
Very rare to see people eating durian for the 1st time NOT having a violent reaction to the taste. And Zoe is right, it is an acquired taste like funky cheese. A good durian smells and hits you in the face on first bite, but lotsa character deeper in.
I think for many people it's hard to get past the initial smell. We've passed many durian stalls on our trips in Asia, so I think we were quite well prepared 😁
Thats likely because when most westerners try durian, they get the Thai version which is alot more intense and less sweet. The Indonesian and malaysian(which are more commonly used in Singapore) are much sweater and less pungent.
Im so glad you bothered to learn how to order local coffee and went for a great alternative for durians to give it a chance. Also, thanks for showing the side of a more local scene in a touristy place!
There is this shop called Tong Heng which sell nice egg tarts and some other traditional puff, Beside it is Maxwell Hawker Centre. All is within walking distance from Chinatown. There is also another hawker nearby called Amoy Street if you walk further (nearer to Tanjong Pagar). Old Airport Road, Golden Mile Hawker, etc. need no introduction with so mani youtubers / articles introducing them
If you are into sweets, should totally try Stall 31 in Maxwell - Xing Xing Tapioca Cake, so soft and full of grated coconut. Very fresh as well (a few hour outside room temperature and it already start to have weird smell), Have to be there early though as popular kuek may sell out before lunch. Fu Shun Jin Ji Shao La Mian Jia serve some pretty awesome char siu, can order lean and fatty cuts in one plate.
The very heart of this island is the Peranakan food - the dessert & curries. Also its old world environment. The Muslim food is something you have tasted. Curry Laksa and nyonya dessert are the very cultural identity of the Raffles city.
Pardon me but I think it would be too much of a simplification to say that Peranakan cuisine is what defines Singapore. There's no doubt that Peranakan cuisine is a very important part of Singapore but it is by no means the definitive cuisine.
due to lower supply of durian when its not in season, hence you would probably be paying x2 for the same quality you get during the season. Also, It is true that the quality is not as good because normally we import from plantations where the best crops are aligned to be harvested at the same time due to bulk orders.
those back lanes used to be wet and dirty, fill with smell, people throw rubbish (rahter than bin it) and pee there especially at night. not forgetting dogs and cats poo.....easily can be found daily. every certain day, as early as 8am, a truck with compartment doors on both side would go round the main road to collect containers of human waste (exchanged container). shop owners sometimes would leave them on their door or gate. As for the road side stalls, nice feeling and atmosphere as I could recall. However, not the best of food hygiene, some had limited supply of water to wash there soiled utensils. often, waste food were thrown into the drain resulting in drainage problems, overflow of water into the road and home to some extent. These were just few of the era time which I had gone through as I grew up in Chinatown. many more.... memories... left... good for the environment but you also loose some along the way
Explore Borneo, the largest island in the region, and the many hidden paradises of Sabah and Sarawak for a longer stay. Unlike the rest of Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak have a hidden paradise for the Dayaks. Tourists who love rain-forests and different tribes and cultures. The diversity of culture, cuisine and entertainment is real. Hi, alcoholic welcome drink and delicious pork, soup and Borneo dance etc.
Hihi...the 2 blue saucers was meant for d soft boiled eggs n u can add some soya sauce n pepper to go with...n then dip with toast.... What u did ...also can la....no worries....hehe
49 really? And here i thought you were 48 and the half. haha..kidding! You both looks great. I will definitely try your kambucha fountain of youth secret. Welcome and have fun in Singapore. Go to homeland hawker centers, its much cheaper and taste just as good.
It's magic juice! Ok maybe not magic, but at the very least it probably helps with digestion 😁 Thank you for the tip, we'll check out Homeland next time we're visiting 🙂
@@ZoeandSimon I believe he is actually referring to "heartland" hawker centres. Meaning the hawker centres outside downtown. Some of these are relatively accessible and have great food, the most common being perhaps Old Airport Food Centre which is near downtown and served by the MRT.

Singapore is clean and beautiful; however, the weather is too hot for me. If we looked at his shining forehead, we knew it was hot. I don't think I can eat anything besides ice cream and have cold drinks.
Durian ice cream is another good way of trying durian for the first time. Most of our foreign visitors are treated to that first before the fruit. My Swedish husband likes the creamy texture - we also have a durian tree in our garden. You can visit the hawker centre at Geylang Serai for nasi padang or even have it at Hajjah Maimunah.
Both you guys are spot on about the durians. Its a cultivated taste for many and just like other strong flavoured "pungent" food, one will grow to love it over time once the taste buds get used to it. Then you will dream of, crave for durians lol Happy to see you both enjoying the sights and sounds and the tastes. Eating is like a national pastime in SIngapore.
Hope you had a great time in Singapore. Just a feedback, for the soft boil eggs with kaya toast, a dash of dark soya sauce is enough. Too much would be too salty.
Generally, we eat the soft boil eggs separately from the toasts..Connie was right, not too much black sauce…half a teaspoon with a dash of pepper would be perfect
Please try the following: 1) Scissors cut curry rice. See here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ILchGqTWQ_8.html 2) Fried Carrot Cake (this is a Michelin Bib Gourmand rated, and for many consecutive years) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Z12mf6ksa8o.html - near this one there is another michelin Bib Gourmand stall called Come Daily Hokkien Mee - Hokkien Fried Noodles with Prawn and Squid. It's alot like your aglio olio, but much better. 3) Bak Kut Teh (pork rib soup) - Song Fa Bak Kut Teh (they are found in many of the malls in Singapore, standard is not too bad)
It is a multi- cultural asian society. Westerners will be impressed by the different types of food. Durian is good taste if u buy the good one, quite costly though. Try peranakan food which is unique to SG and MY. Unique to SG curry fish head, chicken rice, chilli crab. Visit hindu temple, mosque in kampong glam and chinese temple in bugis.
Hello Zoe and Simon, new viewer here. I saw the Franzbrötchen from your other video shot in Hamburg, and I wanted to suggest the Luo Song from Lavender bakery (Orchard ION or Jewel Changi. It is a very simple buttery pastry and only available around 3pm. The bakery is based in Malaysia and we are lucky to have them open shops here. Also sorry cos I'm not sure if you are still in Singapore. I'm enjoying your contents :)
Another great food center in the area is Hong Lim. My two favorite stalls there are Sungei RoadTrishaw Laksa (but I get the fruit juice mee siam) and Outram Char Kway Teow.
Local Singaporean here, welcome to our Food haven city. Its a real melting pot of cultures. Zoe was spot on about the Cheese and Durian experience. You should get a savvy local friend/youtuber to bring you to the famed hotspots(something to bare in mind for your next trip I guess since I only saw this when I got back from my trip). Never eat the mediocre variety when trying something new, best to go to the famed/notoriously well received places. Chicken rice is the soul food in these parts. Everyone has their own take on a dish. Hope you had a great experience here to warrant a 2nd trip.
I commented on other traveller's videos here too. You should check out Mark Weins, Ghib Ojisan and Eatbook youtube channels for a starter for your next food pilgrimage here. Any recommendations from your home country?
Oh and I forgot. Singaporean business are notorious for not updating their work days even on google or facebook business pages. So best to talk to locals online or meet up with them to bring you around or update you on the latest opening times for hotspots.
Hi Zoe and Simon, U guys had actually explored all the large food centres in Chinatown vicinity! Glad U enjoyed your Char Siew Pork Rice (BBQ Pork with Rice) at Chinatown Complex Market and Food Centre. U were sharp to see the cleanliness, the pictureque streetscape, in our sunny island! Zoe, U were spot on - when U said that in our hawker centre, U can find a wide mix of Asian tastes under 1 roof!
Hi Doris, we're travelling with a German passport so we're not 100% sure, but as far as we know you don't need a test to enter Singapore anymore. They recently made this change, but it's probably best to double check this on the official SG website. Hope you have a great trip!
Maxwell Food Centre is our 1st hawker centre. The British governor gather the hawkers there to make centralize them and provide hawkers with a roof over their heads. Years later it was converted to a proper hawker Centre.
Hi, FYI you should add some soya sauce and peppers to the half boiled eggs and mixed it well before dipping your bread in it. (About almost 1 tsp of soya sauce for 2 half boiled eggs, don't put much)
Surfing accident in Sri Lanka 😁 We were there in the weeks before visiting Singapore and attempted to learn to surf. It was more or less successful, as I had to get some stitches on the last day for a cut I got from the fins of my board 😅
@@ZoeandSimon I had one myself. As a boy, after a shower, as I was told, I was walking happily out of the toilet when I slipped and landed my head on the brick stand that my refrigerator was standing on. Had some stitches. I had forgotten about it until you shared your story
Ouch! Well in most cases the scar should be ok after 1-2 years. Right now it's still quite visible 😁 But at least now I can always invent a new story of how I got it when it comes up, which is also a nice perk.
In our corporate offices in 🇺🇸 (NY) Durian is prohibited. We had en employee buy Durian in one of the Asian fruit stalls throughout the city and she brought it in to the office and the hunt for the source of the smell started. I didn’t think it was a big deal but someone thought it was and some paper pusher somewhere decided it’s prohibited to ever bring that in after this “incident”. I hate corporate life. Good on you for traveling the world. Love your channel F*ck working 😂
Thank you! Haha yeah in many hotels/hostels in Asia we also saw signs saying that you're not allowed to bring Durian inside. It's a very potent fruit 😁
