Been using Speedplay Zero pedals for going on ten years now! Love ‘em. One huge advantage is the lower stack height; to that end, I recommend using a shoe that is available with the four-hole sole, like Sidi. With the four-hole sole, the thickness of the adaptor can be subtracted, improving the stack height even further!

I have been on speedplay since about 2012, absolutely love them, especially the double sided entry.. I started out on Look Keo , used to always have problems clipping in , I was always having to look down at the pedals. But since being on speedplay no problems, I maybe miss occasionally but that is due to foot position, generally just means move my foot back a bit a click.

@@Chris-dw3xl Enjoyed using Speedplay, or now Wahoo . Yes you have to do a bit of maintenance work, on the older pedals and some dry lube frame time to time on the cleat. I believe the re released ones by Wahoo are now a completely sealed unit. The cleats can be difficult to walk on ( but tell me one that isn’t). But I can tell you I am still on my original cleats, yes original cleats.

About 6 months after i took up cycling, my wife did too. She started off riding with her trainers/sneakers on flat pedals and did great - she fell in love with the bike and was getting fast. Naturally she transitioned to 'clipping in' and we went for Look Keos with the max amount of float. After that she ended every ride almost in tears with crippling knee pain. On a friends suggestion i bought her speedplay light actions (shes 53kg) and set them up myself, on her first ride, zero pain. Fast forward 8 years and many thousands of miles and still zero issues. I experienced the same myself but to a lesser extent, having used to ride my mtb pedals on the roadbike i bought favero assioma power meter pedals with the max float cleats and within a month had light knee pain. A bike fit got the pain down to 'tightness' but it was noticeable and a distraction on rides. Though i didn't want to lose the power meter pedals, i bought a set of speedplays and hey presto, within a few rides i have zero issues. Although many pedals systems have plenty of float, the speedplays seem to deliver it differently and incredibly freely. If you have knee pain, speedplays are worth a shot and even better to combine with a proper bike fit. Lubricate the cleats every several months and keep on top of your pedal maintenance and you should have no problems.

This video is pretty simplistic and lacks much detail about Speedplay road pedals. As someone who has been riding them since they first came out and has close to 200k miles on them I would says they left many details out that could have been mentioned. Let me see if I can supply some additional information. First off Speedplay makes many types and models of pedals. They make off road, road, and track pedals and many different models of road pedals. This video is about some version of Speedplay Zero pedals with Walkable cleats. They also have the same Zero pedal with a flat medal bottom cleat as well as other versions with different pedal axle materials. They come in Chome Moly (cheapest and heaviest), Stainless Steel, Titanium, and Nanogram Titanium (highest price and lightest). The first three versions share the same cleats while the last has its own cleats. I have read that more pro teams ride Speedplay pedals than any other brand. The main reason is their pro fit kit which cost thousands but allow tremendous fitting flexibility. Speedplay road pedals can be customized with multiple length axles (shorter and longer than the norm) along with all kinds of cleats shims for different length legs (many people have one leg that is a different length than the other) as well as the noted abilities to move the cleats forward/back and right/left and to control float. You are really buying into a pedal system which is one reason they are more expensive than most pedals. The entire pedal is re-buildable if needed (axle, bearings, body) and it is very easy to re-lube the bearings and lubricate the cleats. They also in multiple colors for those that like to color coordinate their bikes and are very light weight. The other big drawing points are their 2-sided entry which makes them very easy to engage (just step down on the pedal) and their low cornering angle (I have never hung one yet). Speedplay started out wiyh their X series of pedals/cleats and later redesigned them into their current Zero model pedals. I rode the X series for many years (new cleats are still available and the pedals last for ever) but eventually switched all my bikes over to Zero models which I think have a much better cleat design (no more scrapped up crank arms). The Zero cleats have float adjustability, longer life, and walkable models. If you are starting fresh go with the Zero pedals. They also have their Light Action pedals which are made for first time clipless users and are easier to get in/get out of and come in plain and walkable versions. I have ridden these but they are very similar to the Zero models but I am unclear if you can adjust their float. Once you purchase them and are ready to install there are some things to note. First off in order for the pedal/cleat system to work correctly it must remain perfectly flat on your shoe bottoms otherwise they will bind. Speedplay supplies some shims with the cleats and has brand fitting guides so that you can compensate for any shoe curvature. As shown in the video the cleat base plate can be adjusted fore/aft and is held in place by three screws. They give you different length screws as you want to make sure they engage enough into the shoe so that you do not rip them off. The base plate comes with a line in the middle and I just set it to the ball of the foot and centered across the shoe. If you like your shoes set farther forward of backward now is the time to set that adjustment. Personally I locktite these base plate screws in place as they never need to be removed again unless you change to another type of pedal. Some shoes on the market (i.e. Sidi) have special Speedplay models available which are all setup to mount Speedplay cleats. Some required a special metal mounting shim under the cleat because the cleat screws were bothering people feet. Once the cleat base is mounted (which I think is identical on X, Zero, Light Action) pedals then four corner screws mount the actual cleat to the base. This is where you can adjust the cleats side to side over the pedal body. Personally mine are always off as far as possibe to one side so they are easy to install as I do not have to measure anything. I loctite these screws as well and you want to make sure you do not overtighten them and bind the cleats. The cleat springs should move freely at this point otherwise the cleat is not flat or has been over tightened. The Zero cleats in this video have two adjustment screws on one side of the cleat. These two screws adjust the pedal heel float for both in and out. They are very tight to adjust and you can play around with them to get any float you want. Personally I screw them both all the way in to adjust the shoe into one fixed location with my shoe straight ahead. Sine they are pedal independent you can have one pedal adjusted different than the other. I have found that even though these float adjustment screws are tight and hard to turn they still move over time so I loctite these as well (using red loctite instead of the normal blue) so they stay in place. I say this because if you use the walkable cleats the cleats cover makes these float screws hidden and it must be removed to adjust the screws. I note this as one of the main knocks on the walkable cleats is that the cleat covers can fall off out on the road. I have found Speedplay walkable cleats covers out on the road myself multiple times and even lost some myself. The cleat is still ridable without the cover but it needs a cover to not screw up the cleat underneath. Personally I use four small dabs of silicone caulk on the corners to glue the covers on once everthing is adjusted correcly. They can still be pulled off easily if needed but they do not fall off out on the road. The Zero pedals have a single "C" type spring cleat in each pedal that will ultimately break unless you change cleats before hand. Speedplay recommends installing new cleats on a regular mile basis but I have found over the years that it is my right cleat (the one I remove when I stop) that always breaks first. This is due to the constant engaging of that foot. Usually when the cleat spring on the right side starts to wear out it breaks off at one of the tips and I can normally tell it is not engading or dis-engaging correctly. It is still ridable and I change both cleats when I get home. That brings me to the one thing that I dislike the most about Speedplay pedals. The racket they have controllong the cost of the pedals initially and the replacement cleats that only they sell. They control their dealers and artifically keep the cost high. It is really a racket on the cleats (walkable replacement cleats are $55-60 pair, just the covers are $20 a pair). Everry time you purchae a new pair of cleats you get everything you need to initially install them over again. When in reality it is only the "C" spring that fails (any even that is only on one side). So you get all the screws, base plates, and walkable covers over again when they are probable just fine from your current pair. I have 40k miles on the same set of Sidi shoes using my original base plates and a whole shoe box ful of extra screws and covers. Originally Speedplay sold a fix up kit with new springs for thier X pedals but phased that out and they have never had anything like that for their Zero pedals. When I have compained to them about it and that they should sell the "C" springs seperately they say they laywers will not let them do it anymore for liabilty reasons. I think it is a joke as many times I just use the "C" clamp from the new cleats are reuse everything else as it looks like new except the covers are dirty. Speedplay pedals themselves last along time and can be easily injected with new grease. They sell an injection tool and grease if you want to use their products. You just inject in grease from one side until it comes out fresh looking on the other side. You wipe off the excess grease initially and expect a little more to leak out on the first ride after. They should spin very freely and not bind at all. Personally I have over a half dozen pair of the Zero pedals (many of them colored) so I occasionally clean them up with Soft Scrub and they look like new. I would highly recommend using their Speedplay cleat oil (or use some dry chain lube) so that they last longer and it makes them much easier to engage especislly when they are new. Are they the perfect road pedal? No as they have a poor initial pricing model, over priced replacement cleats, and they need to stay clean to work correctly. If you step in something and get the cleat cavity dirty they will probably not engage until you clean them out. Many times just squirting some water from you bottle on them will clear them other times you need to use a key or stick to clear the muck out. Most of my pairs I have I got off eBay used but in great condition for much less than new ones. Just clean them up with Soft Scrub and they look like new as they seem to last forever. They will get marred up on the ends if you crash and slide on the pedals but then any pedal has that issue. You can purchase replacement end caps as well. You can save a few dollars if you purchase the non walkable cleats, they are stil walkable and that is all they had for many years.
@earthstick

Have you ever tried reusing the left cleat C spring on the right cleat? They look to me to be identical on both cleats.
@jaycahow4667
@jaycahow4667 4 года назад
@@earthstick I think you are correct on the Zero pedals that the C spring is identical now and can used on either side. I will not have to purchase new cleats as often now but it would be even easier if Speedplay just sold replacement C springs...

Thanks for the info! It's interesting you don't use few of the best advantages these pedals have over other systems IMO - more float, individually adjustable float for both heel in and heel out, lateral adjustment independent of cleat rotation (q factor), ability to move the cleat even more back than the shoe holes allow (this is very individual). Speedplay are by far best when it comes to ease of cleat fit. Sure, easy clipping is also a plus. On the other hand shimano/look design is simpler, basically bomb proof, more stable, but cleat adjustment is more limited and difficult.

As many here comments: Speedplay are great for ease of use - clipping in is a dream. They are also light, and they are a bike-fitters first choice. BUT: it is a more complex system, both the pedals and the cleat. The pedals have to be frequently regreased(and the leak grease towards the axel and cleat - a bit messy). The cleats also needs some cleaning and lubrication, and you have to be careful not to tighten to much. If you are ok with all that, or have your own mechanic, they are great. If you want pedals with no worries, go for Shimano or Look
@chriscroft5706
@chriscroft5706 4 года назад
Bit surprised by the comment about frequent regreasing- I have used them for some years in all weather and they only need regreasing every 2 or 3 thousand miles and it is easy to do. I have never had any issue with the cleats unlike look which require replacing quite frequently.

I’ve tried all the pedal systems and for road riding, I love Speedplay. The convenience of double sided pedals and the limitless customisation in terms of fit is brilliant. The only downside is the cost, as the (expensive) mechanism is all in the cleat. not the pedal. Also they do a fore/aft adjustment plate which is a bit of a godsend.

I switched from SPD-SL to Speedplay as I was having so much trouble clipping in with my left foot. Since the switch no issues. They are much easier to walk in the cleats but not as easy as MTB pedals. For me the Speedplay work really well. My only recommendation is that if you happen to step in some mud / dirt - not only wash this out with a good squirt from your bottle but ALSO - peel off the yellow plastic cover to make sure there is no crud beneath as this will dry hard and render your release inoperative.

Went from SDP to SPD-SL on the road bike. Although there is a ramp-up on the clipping in technique, my knees like SL quite a lot. Also, one thing that almost no one talks about is the weight of the shoes + pedals. Even you choose the lighter SPD shoes and pedals, there is difference in weight to SL, and I do feel that difference while pedalling, in SL everything feels lighter in the rotation movement.

I made the switch to Speedplay this year after 20 odd years or riding with look pedals, like yourself I don’t have knee problems but I like the instant engagement of Speedplay, they are so much easier to find the pedal especially on hill starts where it’s possible to miss and slip out of look pedals, although as a lighter rider at 54 kilos I do find the cleat hard to engage and had to stretch the springs on mine, I feel I can get more power down with Speedplay and would never go back to using other pedals after these! Hope you get on well with them and I look forward to seeing an update after you have had time to evaluate them.

I can only talk about the Speedplay Frog mtn pedals. Been riding them since the '90s. Same pair. I started with SPDs and was having major mud and sand issues. Also the release was inconsistent. Frogs are easy in and out in all situations, have lots of float and are indestructible. In the 25 years I have been using them I think I have had to replace 2 or 3 cleats when the little elastomer has died. I use them on my mtn and road bikes. Extremely light, easy to get in and out of and stupid simple. For those that want one pedal for all uses the Frog is the way to go.

A very interesting and well made video. Although Phil, who is bike genius, says you lose a lot of power with SPDs, I remember Harley saying the difference is so tiny it’s not relevant unless you’re doing long races. What Harley says makes more sense to me - where’s the power being lost? I suspect well fitting shoes are more important than which cleats. I’d be delighted if you or Phil could explain further! Fascinating video, thank you. Don’t forget your bike when you go for your next ride!

"Losing a hell of a lot of power in transfer" compared to Speedplay, sorry but that is bol*ocks. A stiff shoe like the Shimano RX8 paired with something like the M9120 pedal that has a larger/wider shoe contact area than the speedplays do. Where is all the power loss coming from on the down stroke? The whole argument that SPD-SL's have better power transfer because of the contact area cannot be used for Speedplay pedals.

I switched to Speedplay (from Shimano Dura-Ace SPD-SL) about a year ago on my road bike and have never looked back. The main reason I switched was because I didn't like the way SPD-SL clips in. The "Slide-n-Hook" motion is just not reliable (for me anyway). I'd say 50% of the time I'd miss hooking the cleat into the pedal, resulting in my foot sliding off it. Mega annoying when starting to ride after a red-light. With Speedplay's double-sided entry it's just a matter of putting your foot on the pedal, pressing down, and "click" you're clipped in. One thing to note though is that Speedplay cleats require more maintenance. You need to lubricate the cleats regularly with a good PTFE lube to keep them functioning properly. They are also sensitive to dirt contamination (sand etc). A poorly lubricated (or dirty) cleat will result in difficulty clipping in. For me I don't mind the extra maintenance. Properly maintained they work great, and I highly recommend Speedplay for road cycling. If you're into gravel riding I'd stick with SPD (mountain bike) pedals though due to the cleat contamination risk.

I disagree that power is lost with mountain bike pedals. I would have to see research data on that. I don’t think that exits. I stopped using road pedals in 1993 when I stopped racing because I wanted walkable shoes. I haven’t noticed any seat of the pants power loss with Shimano SPD pedals. If I were to go back to road pedals Speedplay would be my first choice because of the walkable cleat. I’ll be interested in your follow up videos to see how you got on with them!

I think the feeling of being much more firmly 'planted' to the pedal and the bike gives the sensation of better power transfer with roadbike cleats, but having ridden eggbeaters on my roadbike for years, there was no noticeable 'finding 20 watts' moment when i switched to Looks or speedplays. So i tend to agree, if theres a power trade-off, its miniscule.

Agree. SPD M9120 pedal has a wider platform for shoe contact than the Speedplay, Shimano RX8 is as stiff as most high end road shoes. Where is the huge loss of power coming from with MTB setup? We're not talking about a pair of converse and toe clips where such a statement might have some truth to it. This guy comes across as a bit of a condecsending pri*k.

1. My Speedplays were hard to clip in initially, but they loosened up over time. 2. Don’t have to look down to clip in is a big bonus. 3. More road clearance means being able to peddle through corners in crit races. 4. Big range of adjustment. 5. You look like you have too much leg extension at the bottom of your pedal stroke.

@timcollins340
@timcollins340 4 года назад
I’ve tried pretty much all the pedal/cleat systems over the years. I don’t believe any of the crap about ‘lost power’ with SPDs. That’s simply based on a subjective extrapolation from the platform size. Efficiency has far more to do with fit and stiffness, and if you don’t race, is not really very relevant. I’d love to see any authoritative study which says otherwise. Speedplay are fiddly to set up, are bloody expensive, and take quite a lot of maintenance. If road cleats are important to you (you want to wear fancier shoes!), SPD-SL, in my opinion, give the best combination of stability, ease of use, and price. But for most normal users who need to walk occasionally, and want to ride year round, SPDs are very, very hard to beat.
@alanspence1716
@alanspence1716 4 года назад
Tim Collins I agree with you. To be convinced otherwise I’d need to understand where the power is being lost - it could only be through heat or noise or some sideways motion, all of which are obviously not the case, except, perhaps, at an extraordinarily small level.

Speedplay pedals are a great and simple pedal system for any cyclist to use, from the novice to the veteran rider. They are simple to set up, and use, they are not just for cyclist who have, or had knee injuries, they are for all cyclist, and probably the best pedal for the new cyclist. The reason many cyclist have knee issues (unless you came with a knee injury from another sport or accident) when riding is due to improper fit on the bike or pedal cleat misadjustment , which in many other pedal systems is easy to do by the end user.

I would like to see actual data showing that road bike pedals give more efficient power transfer than spd, especially with mid to high end mtb or road shoes with stiff soles. I am extremely skeptical of the claim that one should switch to road pedals for that reason.. I can see certsin advantages of road pedals but not that. And of course road pedals have some disadvantages too, so circumstances that vary will dictate the best choice.

Yes they are nice but high maintenance imo. The single side aero ones are v.v.sexy. The ti spindles are fantastic and I think you can get different length spindles to alter the stance. I wouldn't advise walking a la APN and you need to avoid mud, grit,sand etc. Regular cleaning is essential. 4 hole shòes are recommended as are the covers for the cleats. The 3 hole converter adds another layer to the sole. The shoe actually becomes the pedal, the pedal the cleat. If you ride track or race and don't unclip too often they are fine. I know why they are recommended by Phil.

Buy a can of "dry lube", WD40 do one, and give the cleats a spray very couple of hundred miles, I do mine the same time I lube my chain. Keep the cleats clean, avoid walking on muddy verges etc as the cleats hold the mud in and you can't clip in without spending 5 minutes cleaning them. The tension to engage will got less (easier to clip in) after a few weeks/few hundred miles. Make sure you grease the pedal after riding in heavy rain. If you use them on carbon soled speedplay specific shoes, (4 hole mounting), you will need a stainless shim to go between the shoe and cleat, otherwise you'll destroy the carbon in a couple of rides. Stick with them there the best pedals ever IMO.

Speedplay are terrible for durability, and you have to keep maintaining them. Plus a decent bike fitter will tell you that having too much free float can be worse for knee stability than Zero float. Speedplay may in some cases relieve symptoms of knee pain but they’re not the cure, and has to do with another underlying issue, example insoles, wedging. For ladies I recommend Look Keo with its low disengagement torque. For men Shimano SPD-SL.

Hi Katie Kookaburra great content as always - yes, I see why people want to try Speedplay, they also look quite bling, and you can set the float exactly like you want to. (But in most cases other systems offer enough float and sideways angle adjustment to achieve the same thing. (Less float is achieved by different cleats (Shimano red or blue cleats) As for knee pain: as stated in your video there usually are 3 main causes: 1 not enough float, some knees need space to wobble about. 2 cleat to much forward, this gives pain under the knee cap because the pressure is too much on the front of said knee. (Knee needs to be above the pedal) 3 - most peoples feet angle outward a little (sit on a table, dangle your feet, see where your feet point to in a relaxed position) if not angled enough, the ligaments on the sides of the knee can get irritated: if you notice this, correct immediately, as a few days of cycling with wrongly angled pedals that can set you back for months. In my mind speedplay might only be a solution for some extreme angling needs. For all other situations I would go for practicality.
