Okay y’all I know “the photos show you what color to make the square” Obviously I made the first square in those colors. But there are no other color instructions for all of the other squares. That was my point of saying there aren’t color instructions.

Not only do these crochet kits need a skill level indicator on the box, they also need to make sure that it is in a color and font that is, EASY TO SEE.

I know another market for this kit: The crocheter that's bored on a vacation. They didn't bring a project for whatever reason (weren't "allowed", forgot, current WIP is too much to bring along, etc), but saw this in Target and picked it up to knock out over the weekend stay somewhere. My mom and i used to do this frequently when we went up north for a weekend during the summer. Heck the craft stores around the touristy town we went to knew people wanted kits like this and had some made up.

Given that the Mondo Llama "brand" (yes, it's a Target label) is positioned in stores near the kids/toys section, the assumption is that it is a craft kit for beginners cause most kids aren't going to be at an adv.beginner or intermediate level. The market demographic was probably 8-13 year old girls given it's colorway and how trendy crochet bags are right now. But that's just my thoughts on it ❤

If you look on Targets site they said the kits were made for families. I learned to crochet when I was 7/8 yrs old. I think even then these terrible instructions would have made it hard & I would have needed my mom or grandmas help.

I’ve never understood the interest in a crochet kit, EXCEPT for maybe a beginner who doesn’t have the supplies. I do appreciate your review though and can understand why people would be intrigued! I definitely watched all the way through even though I’d never buy one 😂 As an experienced crocheter we already have hooks, yarn and access to patterns. So they absolutely should be targeting to beginners IMO! I do think you did a beautiful job with your honest review and it actually is really cute! 🥰

When I was working at my LYS we had some cashmere colorwork kits, and those were cool because you got a bunch of different colors of cashmere for the price of one regular skein of cashmere, but it didn't include tools, just the cashmere and a booklet with a few colorwork patterns, there was enough yarn for any one of the patterns. I think kits like that are great for non-beginners, I'd say I'm like, advanced/intermediate, and I really loved knitting up one of the samples because I learned some new stitches for the pattern and I got to use a bunch of cashmere. We also had kits with just one saguaro beanie pattern, and some of the kits had the yarn for the "sunset saguaro" and some had the yarn for the "springtime saguaro" and I think those were nice too, because the yarn and pattern separated would have cost more. That also did not include tools... Otherwise, yeah, kits are for beginners

For someone who's not a beginner, I think a kit could be useful for the pattern. If you have decent experience, you can always change out yarns n other options to make it your own. Just my opinion why it would or could be useful to someone other than a beginner.
@vegangelist

Some kits are exclusive and the only way to get a particular pattern. This actually annoys me because maybe i want to make this design but want different colors or fibers. I follow some non US designers who do glorious CALs and offer kits for the yarn packs, but the pattern is still available by itself. But Annie's and Mary Maxim have both offered kits for certain designs and the individual pattern isn't available. Hoooked also offers amigurumi kits, which I've only bought on clearance, for the yarn and access to that particular pattern. But the pile of unwanted bamboo hooks that I've amassed... wow! I give them away, once i collect enough. Ha!

Hello I am new to your channel. I enjoyed your review of the kit & think You were very honest about everything. So I was reading on the Target site and this line was created during Covid for families to craft together. That said I agree that is kit is Not made for beginners in mind due to the poor instructions. So when a crochet square pattern has the the squares arranged on point like this what works well is to start right down the middle of the bag diagonally and work your way out attaching in diagonal lines. So say bottom left to upper right in the middle. Then do the next diagonal line on each side of the middle. Then you go back the other direction and attach the opposite direction. A fantastic example for this is the instructions for attaching the Peacock Blanket made by Ophelia talks here on YT. Just adding this in case somone wants to make this and crochet the squares together. Agree these straps would Not cut it with the stretch. Now my 2 actual concerns with this kit and this is just something that is very important to me is Country of origin of the yarn. Around 70% or more yarns made in Asia are made with Slave Labor, Child Labor & Indentured Servitude. I disliked that Target just labeled the kit "imported" and I think it could be because they dang well know where they got the yarn from & don't want people finding out. Otherwise why not list the country of origin right? My 2nd concern which also goes along with this is that nowhere did it say the yarn was OTEK certified. This assures that there are no toxic chemicals used in making the yarn and then being transferred onto the user. Honestly someone would be much better off getting the Premier yarn at the Dollar Tree. It's not made with slave labor or kids & it's safe to use. For these 2 reasons I would say no to this kit but this is my personal choice because I won't contribute to such things. Not everyone knows this & I am in no way faulting you. I think it should be told to all crocheters & knitters because it's important to know these awful things still go on. As long as people keep buying it from them, the longer it will go on. Btw not nice about those nasty comments. You are lovely & your voice is pleasant. People love to hide behind keyboards & bully. It's not ok. Thanks for the review.😊💕🧶

@@Tfwcrochet the good news is: it isn't hard to find yarn that is made in Turkey. The majority of yarn you'll find online (except no name brands on Amazon or some place like Temu or Wish) and in craft stores is made in Turkey or the US. Not all, but most. And the OEKO-Tex is fairly recent (in the grand scheme of things) labeling that you'll find on yarns in craft stores (you'll likely not always see it on all yarns in a LYS since many of those are from small companies who may not be able to afford the certification process. So you don't have to shy away from all yarns without that labeling, if it's sourced well). But, in craft stores, it's even on yarns like red heart super saver so it's very common now. But if a label doesn't have that info, you can scan it and search it on the Oeko-tex website. Additionally, you could reach out to a company about their practices. For some companies, not having the certification may be a cost issue as all such things come with a price that is easier for large companies to absorb. It's like when i go to the farmer's market: some large farm operations are certified organic. Others follow the same practices but can't afford the certification because they are very small. But a good farm will still answer your questions about it. I'll bet that if you start looking at your yarn labels, you'll see that oeko-tex mark (I'm seeing it more and more) and you'll see that most of your yarn is made in Turkey.

Beginners can make that hook user-friendly to hands by getting the foam makeup applicator that is rounded, with a pointed tip and thick other end. Use a nail,metal fingernail file, skewer, etc. and make a hole from fat end coming out at the point. Now,shove your hook through it, from the fat end. Hold your hook on a flat, non slide surface like a pillow, and push the applicator onto it, just to where you will hold it. Now you have made a comfy, ergonimic hook!

i think the strap instructions left out that you do the six double crochets in the other side's chain-2 space, then sew the top of that row to the top of the row on the other side. that way it looks the same at all of the points, and you will only see the join if you're really looking for it
@Yirggzmb
@Yirggzmb 2 месяца назад
That's what I would assume too. It would be nice if the pattern explicitly said it, but being willing to fudge it a little and just do whatever makes sense to you/gets the job done is helpful. I also wonder a bit about the country of origin, not necessarily the manufacturer, but like the people who designed it. Different cultures and at different times, people absolutely expect different levels of hand holding. Right now I see a lot of people online wanting basically full blown step by step, here's 700 photos of it in progress, tutorials. Whereas this pattern reminds me more of old magazine patterns who kept things as succinct as possible to save on printing space. If nothing else, a crochet kit at Target is probably going to be kinda cheap, and paper and ink cost money.

I make a LOT of bags & for my straps i attach my yarn with a slip stitch n then use that space the sl st is in to go back into (as if its 1 chain) & do a chainless foundation row for my strap. When i get to the other side (once the straps the right length) i sl st & then just like you do when doing ribbing on an edge (like a cuff or ribbing on a beanie), i sl st into the next stitch (or 2 if i use HDC or DC) and then go back up the chainless foundation "rows" i just made. I usually do 3 rows sometimes 4. If you work it right you will sl st to the left on each side like you do with regular crochet (which will end up being ur 2 outside rows, if you do 3, with ur initial FSC row becoming the middle row of stitches. Can look cool with 1 colour in the middle/FSC & a diff colour on the 2 outer rows )& you wont have a messy or bumpy area where you attached the strap 🙂 ETA, if ur worried about ur yarn being a bit stretchy or you feel ur bag doesnt quite look finished off, you can do a SC row all the way around & go over where you attached ur strap via the sl sts & it can make it a bit sturdier & tidy it up/make it look finished off. I sometimes do this and also do a row of sc inside the loop that the bag/strap makes, i hope that makes sense lol
@vegangelist

I concur with bordering the straps (as i mentioned in a comment i left), except i would do slip stitch or reverse sc since those will stretch less than sc.

You are ADORABLE!❤️ Stumbled across your channel cause I’m working on improving my crocheting skills by watching tons of crochet videos. The kit piqued my curiosity because I’m always examining the amigurumi kits in the store and wondering if I’m there yet. Rarely do they say they are for beginners and if they do, they seem to always be so expensive.🤔So thank you so much for the interesting content. Thank you for the interessting video. I would count myself as a crochet-beginner. I did a few coasters and one amigurumi (that from a kit), but not much more. What I like about kits is that they give you all the yarn you need. I'm a primary knitter with mostly yarns that don't match coaster / amigurumis / bags for crocheting, so there is not that much of yarn there. And especially for amigurumi you tend to need small amounts of colors. So for me its a conviniecne factor that I don't need to buy a whole skein of a color I probably won't use otherwise just to have like 10 grams of it for a detail. Having "all the yarn included" is what sells kits for me. No worries about finding the right colors (or somehow matching colors) and no leftovers that you won't use otherwise.

I have made that particular bag (though not from this particular kit) and it is super technical and the directions are fairly difficult to follow as a written pattern. There are many RU-vid videos with amazing easy to follow along guides on this pattern. I can't imagine someone just starting out trying this particular bag pattern on the fly as a written pattern only. Thanks for clearly showing why watching a demonstration and possibly buying a kit from a big box distributer of yarn (or any one of the millions of amazing kits curated by designers) is a better option. You almost always get support from the designer if you have issues with their pattern....with this sort of kit, who do you call?

@JayJones-bp4xl 2 месяца назад
You look amazing. Just ignore anyone who says different. The instructions, should have been to work six double into the corner chain space of the opposite granny square to join. To join with a single crochet, you should place both sides together, now working a sc though both squares join together , as normal. If want a stronger handle, it is a good idea to add two or three rows of sc on both sides of the stap joing with a SL st to the bag at each end. If you want the stap to be stronger you can also add a crab stitch row .

I did this kit! I got it on a whim to get back into crochet after a long hiatus. It did the job! I generally agree with your comments about the materials. I was pleasantly surprised by the hook's good function and form, and it can't be overstated that they went above and beyond with the needle. I hate acrylic but knew the kit would be acrylic because it's a $15 kit. I found the acrylic to be both acceptable and a generous amount. I disagree with most of your assessment of the instructions. I did not miss color instructions, it seemed obvious to rotate the colors evenly and leave white for the border. Nor did I miss any instructions about how many squares to make - I just counted the squares on the assembly page. The assembly instructions were clear to me and I had a straightforward time assembling it, and no, I've never made this bag before. (I'd actually never made granny squares before either, I don't like how they look lol. Perhaps my detachment from the outcome of the project is why I wasn't fussed about the instructions?) I do agree about the handle joining instructions. I found the instructions inadequate for that part and after some experimentation I made up a way that looks pretty good. But on the whole I thought it would be a good kit for pretty much anyone, including beginners, provided the beginner has access to someone who crochets. My bag is also hanging on the wall! I'm going to use it to store yarn, lol. It was a great timepass but not much good for anything else.

The pattern that this kit is copying (Sweet summer sunflower bag) does the straps in a much nicer way, the stitches are vertical along the strap as you mentioned would be nicer. It's also integrated into the border so there aren't any weird connections, not really sure why the kit instructions chose the construction they did It would be nice if the kit had cotton yarn rather than acrylic, it tends to hold up much nicer in bags and if they're worried about cost they could just not give quite so much extra yarn

With all that extra white, you probably could have made another round of white for each square. Who knew, right? Either that, or you may have been significantly under gauge. Although then i would expect a lot of leftover of the colors. I saw the chart and paused it and the best way i could see to do it would be to create a long diagonal line across and then loop around at the bottom and come back up diagonally. That would work it all in one pass. Then there would only be one other small section where you would need to attach and join. But, definitely, marking the path and where to start is how they should have done it. I need to go back and look at the photo of the box but it is possible that you could have done jaygo and that would have created a second round of white on each square. But i don't know how jaygo would work in that layout without getting my hands on it and drawing it out for myself. Lol As you've found out, a sharp needle is wonderful. I have some discontinued needles that i love! I bought about 5 sets and they are almost all i will use. They are pointed, though not sharp, and they flatten out like a cobra snake head. They are wonderful for weaving in because you can go under stitches easily but you can also go through stitches (important for weaving in well, imo). Agree completely with your assessment of the handles. Working in long rows would prevent stretch. Frankly, i wouldn't make any bag with acrylic because of the stretch. I made a bag pattern that i got from Annie's about 5 years ago that works the handle in short rows but it alternates dc and fpdc stitches. And it makes a great texture AND those fpdc stitches prevent it from over stretching. It's such a great design. Since your straps are made and attached, i would suggest taking the additional cream and bordering the straps, on both sides. Slip stitch or reverse sc (crab stitch) will keep it from stretching more than minimally because the border is worked in a different direction and because those stitches don't stretch much.

I was interred in buying it. I have a hook but no yarn. I used to knit and crochet in the past but I am out of practice. I was thinking about using it to get back into it.

I don’t think it was ch 6 I think it was ch 3 but it was that method.

"Learn how to crochet in squares" - That phrase on the front of the box is what markets it at beginners.

@@Jennlikestocrochet that’s true I can see the confusion for sure. They need good clear labeling on these kits for sure.

I came here to say that. My mother learned to knit from a book that said "Learn to Knit" on the front. This said "learn to crochet in squares." I would have totally expected some basic, well-illustrated instructions , such as I have seen in the back of several professionally produced pattern books.
