In this video, after listening to Cal Newport's Digital Minimalism, I attempted a 30 day digital detox challenge. Not as brutal as no phone at all but it was tough. Side effects of being a gen z kid with too much free time and internet access? A crippling phone/technology/social media addiction.

the less you start using your phone, the more you realize others use theirs a lot and are missing out on real life. Especially for gen z, there is a normalization of spending hours a day on your phone (even before quarantine)

Seriously! I realized that atp the only reason why I still have social media is to stay relevant with my friends cause I hate being the only person who’s like “what’s that”. Like my friends were making tiktok references a week ago and I was just confused because I haven’t had it since September . I used to hate people who would complain about my obsession with tiktok and the Internet (now they have social media lmao) but I’m starting to sympathize with them (how the tables have turned). I am not one of those people who are like “ugh I hate phones yadada” but I would like to talk about other things outside of the Internet sometimes. Like the content of the convos I have with my one friend is just tiktoks and it gets annoying sometimes cause I’d like them to talk about themselves rather than tiktok.
@irenicrose
@irenicrose 3 года назад
@@mel_ty9500 yeah same! and I see what you mean, like everything is related to trends online rather than topics to talk about with friends not revolving around technology. I recently had to evaluate how much anime I was watching because I found that it was all I would talk about with people and it was an obsession. Our generation has forgotten the joys of talking about life and stuff not relating to trends.

i totally agree with this, but i don’t know what to do except go on my phone, laptop or kindle especially in quarantine. i’m a master procrastinator who hands in all assignments late (or never) which is really wrecking my school life. social media and films have been my escape :/. if you guys have any ideas of what to do except read books in quarantine i’d love to know 💞

@@blkbarbie2671 i really relate to this!! I'm slowly trying to take care of myself and do my assignments now, one by one, and so far it's going okay. My tips for what you can do is find a hobby! It can be like knitting/ crocheting (make cute clothes/bags/blankets etc. and it's really relaxing & fun to see the progress), baking and cooking for your family and make them happy, if you like drawing you can go outside with a sketchbook and headphones and sit somewhere and draw (take some food with you if u want!), i also want to try to start rollerblading when it gets a little warmer outside (: sorry if this is too much but i can write a lot more ideas if you want hehe
@anava7030
@anava7030 3 года назад
@@blkbarbie2671 I feel this :( If you would like some suggestions for how to do things different: First, maybe start consuming media in different ways. Get engrossed in an audio book, listen to a new album, watch a new movie, or a documentary on something you’re interested in. Then you can try to find online communities to talk about those things. I get that a lot of us are doing a lot of socializing online, but it would be cool if we could socialize about things we knew we were interested in. It might feel better!

Every time I'm not on my phone, I personally feel like my mood boosts so much more. So, I deleted my social medias for a week. A week no Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, Discord, nothing, nada, zilch. I felt definitely a whole lot better. I hiked, I cooked my family dinner, I started my artwork again, and I continued to read more books. Overall my mood increased as well as my mental state. Social Media is so toxic. People create trends that make people uncomfortable in their own skin. So at the end of the week, I fell right back into a 'trance', scrolling through social media all day and locking myself in my room. To give you a run down, take some time off of social media, and take some time to find a hobby you can enjoy.. or spend some time with your family. -gabrielle

I do something similar to this every few months, but I always end up crawling back to social media. I am a pretty solitary person, and if I don't go on social media there's a solid chance I won't see a single person the entire day. I end up becoming isolated and loney, so I go to my parasocial relationships and pretend I'm not alone. It's definitely a problem I should work on

Love this video. I’ve been feeling the same way for a while. 6 months ago, I deleted all social media. Everything - Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat, etc. All gone. At first my hands would absentmindedly open my phone and try and pull up the apps (so strange how engrained these habits were). This lasted a couple of weeks, but after, I felt liberated. I spent time doing things I really wanted - I took up running, writing, and reading. My mental health has improved soooo much. Sending love your way from London xx

I feel like a good way to cure *phone addiction* is to _customize your phone_ so that social media is no longer at the forefront of your phone usage. plus when you make it aesthetic, you get to look at pretty colours/ pictures when you're aimlessly locking into your phone (basically you're going on a _scenic route_ ). Another tip is just to _change the cover of a social media app to a picture of something that's negative_ (like a cute bandaid/ pills) so that your brain will _naturally_ start associating social media with toxicity. I explained how it's helpful to make your phone experience more intentional in my video (that I literally posted today like what are the odds lmao) but yea ew to -phone addiction- . I'm tired of being controlled by a device but I would personally not be participating in digital minimalism lol. I've spent a year without a phone before and it was really eye-opening but it's just not that sustainable for me.

I’ve tried to incorporate 2 days a week without my phone. Sounds so low, but I average about 7 hours a day. Sometimes it just music in the background, sometimes it’s talking to people, but I recognize it as a problem. I don’t like silence. I legitimately cannot stand silence. I’m an only child and reminds me of loneliness and the times I was just alone. I can’t do one activity without some kind of background noise, even reading even if it’s just music or something instrumental. It’s also hard for me to put my phone away because I have two little ones and I love taking pictures and videos of them, for myself, for my husband who missed it because he was at work and for our families who live far far away. But your video also makes me realize how much I need to just, try better but at the same time, not beat myself up over my mishaps. Thank you for this and I really enjoyed this journey with you. I’d love to see how things are going now.

I'm so glad I got off of my smartphone. I switched to a flip phone and have been so much happier honestly. I wish more people were able to take the plunge and switch. As a neurodivergent person with adhd, autism, and depression (dominantly adhd), my life has been very much improved :) I still use instagram for dms since I can't really see people at school cause covid and I use my computer for entertainment but honestly everything is just better. I was always complaining about how much I hated my smartphone but I had never considered I can just.. stop?? Idk I thought someone might be interested to hear about this but I really recommend that whoever is reading considers quitting their smartphone I really cannot imagine having it back again.

Great video, Amanda! I've been slowly detoxing over the last half a year or so, and I think I've successfully detached from social media and mindless consumption. E.g. the only social media I use is a private insta with only 20 friends & I stopped using Netflix. Even still, there's so much good and useful content to absorb, so I find myself using my laptop & phone a lot. So my next step is to drive down my screen time and shift to non-screen fulfilment like books and writing by hand. (And maybe actually learning how to play my guitar??)

Pro-tip: You can set app timers on your phone. Idk where for Iphones but for android it's under settings and digital wellness! I have an hour set for apps like IG and tiktok. You can obviously change it (I give myself more allowance when i'm feeling ill or somewhere with literaly nothing else to do) but generally it's more annoying to change the setting than to just find something else to do. It's been very helpful for me. Also if you aren't ready to give it up all together, make one day of the week a no social media day- My sundays are no social days! I try to fill my time reading (which is still on a screen but not mindless scrolling), or one of my hobbies. And if all else fails sometimes I lay and listen to music and think.

When I took a break from social media my phone time average also went down to 45 min - 1h, and it felt so???? GOOD?????? And for the first time in a really long time I actually felt care-free, EVERYONE needs to try this.

if u guys have 10-12 hrs on ur phone a day and u can't handle a full digital detox yet, then i suggest using ur laptop as a substitute since u can't carry it everywhere ^_^. social media is harder to navigate here. once u do that for a week or two then start disconnecting from ur laptop as well.

I work in a retail store that's commission based, something that I've noticed is everyone watches their phones unless they're talking to somebody. I've seen one guy doomscroll while still in the process of a sale rather than making conversation. you can only imagine the terrible "vibes." I've noticed doomscrolling makes me sad or angry or irritable. Definitely leaving that job once I hit the year mark at least.

I would love to see more videos like this! Back in October I deleted almost all my social media apps, with Quora & RU-vid being the exceptions. I still have to work on digital addiction but it was a huge step getting rid of Instagram

I would love to begin this journey but currently am living in a region that is in full lockdown so the only way to connect with people aside from my partner is through my phone... any tips or tricks for doing this while not being able to see friends would be awesome

Maybe just keep the apps that you use for communicating with Friends and Family and delete all content Based social media.

Try tracking your computer usage using 'rescue time' or something so you see how long you stay on it plus ur phone so u have a clearer picture. When I did that and saw that once I spent 11 hours of my day in front of a screen I freaked and manage to cut down from tech significantly! But anyway loved the vid! 🤗

hi i love ur channel sm, i was just hoping i could give you a quick tip :) the music in your videos can be quite loud sometimes, so when it switches from you talking to music i often have to turn the volume down and then turn it back up so that i can hear you talking. just telling you this so that you can maybe think abt it for future videos :) love ur content

As an elder millennial, I can remember part of a childhood without technology. I was so happy and free as a child. Then I began using social media in my late teens and that began taking up a lot of my time. Then after smart phones were introduced, it was all downhill from there. I now spend 4-5 hours a day consistently on my phone and I think it does carry a lot of weight mentally. I miss interacting with real people, so I've been trying to be more intentional with my time and actually spend it talking to friends and family. I also try to keep in mind the productive things I could be doing, instead of just mindlessly staring at my phone for hours.

The thing is that I don’t have any socials except tiktok and RU-vid (I don’t have friends and I recently left Twitter). all I do is binge anime and play roblox in between 💀 I have very strict parents so going on isn’t an option so im not proud of having an average of 10 hours on my phone and tablet but it’s not like if I had many other things to do 💀
