Hi, in this 'trying to fix' video I attempt to repair a gaming laptop sent over from Finland by Jari. It stopped working whilst gaming, and never worked since. It is a ACER Aspire 7 - A717-71G-58U3. It doesn't charge or power on.
It is a lovely looking laptop with NVIDIA GeForce GTX1060 with 6GB GDDR5 VRAM, so hopefully if it can be fixed it will still be a very capable machine.
If you would like to support these videos, please click here / mymatevince
Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things. I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things, so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series. Many thanks, Vince.

Not that it affects you too much with this fix but be careful with the voltage ratings of ceramic capacitors (the brown boxes you were measuring and replacing). The capacitance drops hugely with applied voltage on certain types. When repairing old computers and consoles, I will selectively replace some electrolytic caps with ceramic and have to be very careful about voltage ratings especially on outputs of audio circuits. The most egregious design I saw was in the Sega Game Gear with electrolytic used in series with the LCD having tens of volts DC bias and almost as high signal swing. Additional fun fact: those two MOS-FETs you were probing in the board were the twin external switching FETs of a synchronous buck (reducing) voltage regulator. Typically, these are used where very high currents are being delivered and reasonably high efficiencies are required. There's no risk with a short on the output of those as the regulating chip will detect the output short and put the part in a failsafe mode to stop excessive current causing damage (which will be why the shorting capacitor didn't burn out).

Greetings from Finland! Did you add other Memory stick? ...to use the "Dual Channel" memory... Anyway. Really nice Fix! Here we don't have analog TV channels anymore so we did use and some still do use a "DigiBox" to convert the Digital signal to analog for the TV. Some of them come with PVR(Personal Video Recording) options and so arent just converters. But those are comeing really old now days(as i'am not even sure you can buy one these days), so maybe some of them you can find faulty, for your next videos...

Hey Vince, I have an Acer Aspire V From around 2016 and it's wonky, and sometimes if hit hard enough on the trackpad it will short out, turn off and won't show signs of life unless the laptop battery is unplugged, although the battery might be unplugged for only a second the laptop will then start normally working like nothing ever happens, it short out for the record breaking 7 times and still is alive to this day
@dbzssj4678
@dbzssj4678 3 года назад
Li-ion batteries if drained to zero, will start charging very slowly. Its on purpose because a 0v state is considered a fault and could be a sign of a shorted battery and that's dangerous. Not saying it is just why is charging at .2v. Good work finding the issue and fixing it.
