you can buy replacement screens mate, from places like aliexpress. I don't think it's the easiest thing in the world to replace, but you might as well give it a go on at least one of the better ones.
As xyzzy said you can get them from aliexpress. Not cheap but possible to get: m.aliexpress.com/wholesale/2ds-xl-upper-screen.html?channel=direct&keywords=2ds-xl-upper-screen
This. According to sellers on aliexpress, max they're going for is $40 (£31), assuming that the screens just need to be replaced and he spent, £53 on the consoles themselves. That's £10.60 per 2DS XL, pop a fresh screen and that's £42 total costs for repairing, anything you want to sell them for, as refurbished is profit. Since they're going (let's underestimate and say) £100 on average selling at £60-80 seems fair, even if he lowballs, it nets him a fair £18 per, £70 total.
A popping noise means that the top or bottom screen is broken from an internal level, or from a torn ribbon cable i.e, the other n2DS screen which doesn't turn on has a more broken screen than the first two
16x16 Do you know anything about the SD card error “An error has occurred, forcing the software to close. The system will now restart.” I know this is an SD card reader error I don’t know really what to do at this point it’s an original 3DS.
They can't all be winners. I like that you show the failures as well as the victories because it gives a realistic idea of what happens when you do this.
They only released these systems less than a year ago, so almost all faults are going to be damaged screens from accidents. Worn down batteries and buttons take a few years of abuse.
Too bad it’s of shite quality. Bought one for my brother and within too weeks the top screen fucked up and a couple years later the battery won’t keep the charge when unplugged from the charger. There’s been countless people having issues with the Pokéball edition specifically. I wanna string the dumb fuckers that created it up by the nuts, that’s how frustrating it’s been
Same happened to me, I found a bunch of DSi and DS lites for cheap, was excited. Unfortunately the DSis were liquid damaged :-( The lites were a mixed bag, long story short, I converted them to DS-GBA.
i think this is the video where our loved Vince comes out as our fixing hero. he did inspire me to get soldering station and hot air station and i am now learning to fix stuff too
You poor guy; this made me laugh so hard. I love how you said that you're not bitter and then went through a long rant about all of them having the same problem. I hope you have better luck in the future. :)
I broke two OG 2ds super easy, the bottom and top screen are actually one screen surrounded by very cheap plastic... bit of pressure in the middle and CRACK! From reading online, it seems they've put again a very cheap plastic around the new 2ds XL and lot of people report having their top screen go faulty. I bought a new 3ds xl early this year, I couldn't be happier with the device. Goes to show even Nintendo can cheap out and make crap devices that can break easily.
I love these types of videos, only issue I'd say is that the audio is mostly on the left side, any way you can make the audio even on both speakers in future videos? Love your content!
Brilliant Intro, honest, open and focused. limited tools and limited skills is the default setting of all humans! get that broken toaster working today!
Got caught out in a similar fashion with 3ds XL's a while back, threading the ribbon cable for the top screen back through the hinge is also a proper pain in the backside.
That bit does look fiddly. If I had the chance to change one I think I would have tried wrapping it around a cocktail stick and then eased it through.....Unfortunately I didn't get the chance :-)
My Mate VINCE I fixed mine after my cat knocked it off my desk and broke my top screen. I took a paperclip and folded it (kind of like those small metal hair pins, which would probably work too) and twisted it and pulled it through, I wouldn't like to have to do it again but I probably could. Right now my volume slider on my new 2ds xl is broken, I'm gonna have to try to figure out how to fix it soon.
or you get the normal 2ds, you pay 99 dollars, or whatever much it is in the uk, and you're good, plays the game, its smaller but not too small, i have both the 2ds and 3ds and i legit just use the 2ds
Just found your channel and your a maker like me, you enjoy getting in there and having a go...…..I myself am an electronics engineer and found your thought process (95%of the time !) is spot on ….Nice work keep it up....Oh yeah your SMD re-work was great (PS4 HDMI) seen people who claim to no what there doing do worse
This video actually really helped me. I have been in the market for a 2DS XL and now I am rethinking that idea... I should spend the extra money for the 3DS in case the screen does break. I am so glad to have a mate named Vince! :-D
Go on Ali express they are about $26, I know shipping time for us in the UK can be annoying but at least you could fix one if you wanted too. Keep up the great content.
Hey Vince! I've been watching you for about 6 months now and I just wanna say that over those 6 months that i've watched you you've improved in a lot of different ways. Your commentary is more smooth, your tone is cheery and the way you talk has become better in the sense of getting the viewers attention. Keep up the good work!
You still have good housings for the most part, good motherboards, good lower screens, batteries, and more! All good to sell, or keep for future repairs.
Loving these videos, great series. I love taking things apart and it’s really cool to see you fixing thing I can’t afford to do myself! Keep it up sounds like your enjoying this as well. Fun for everyone!!
well, thanks for trying it out! i always thought these batches of multiple defective units seemed dodgy. if its from a private seller, it might be they just failed repairing (but that would still mean there might be more damage than on an item that you get defective from first hand). but if its a seller, why would they make a secret of what exactly is defective about the units? if it were a bunch of items with the easiest to fix fault on them (e.g. stuck button) they would sure as hell write just that and price the items accordingly. if it were a bunch that could possibly be fixed by using some of the devices as replacement, they would just tell you since it would motivate people that like fixing to buy it.
Aw, damn. That really sucks they were all things you couldn't repair. But even still, I love this series! Keep going with it! I'd love to see later down the line an episode where you take another crack at some 2DS/3DS and end up using some of the parts in this haul to fix them! Eventually I'd like to see you be able to do things in future videos you can't do now (ie. fixing screens). It'd be cool to learn things alongside you in this series. Either way, no matter what you do, I still enjoy the content. Keep at it! :D
Thanks for the nice comments :-) Yeah I am definitely up for doing more of these, just unfortunate that this one didn't work out. Glad you like the series :-)
Good video, I struck lucky with 2x old 2dses and a 3ds, which are now mostly working. I bought them from individuals who were honest about the faults. Emboldened, I was tempted by one of those job lots but now I know better. Thanks for showing us why not.
hard luck mate been there my self ... I always check if there is a shop because 9/10 they stripped the stock down for parts, but saying that I did get a supplier of laptops I repaired and the shop was pretty much good at there descriptions ...but when they say faulty & no returns 9/10 there just selling junk they want to make money without recycling - !! good video ... i always say if you dont try you dont learn mate i been in repairs and electronics since 1990, i started with the simple knowledge like you and people saying oh you dont know what your doing well but they soon be asking for you to repair there stuff soon change there tune keep up the good work :D
When I saw they selling 5 broken 2DSs, I already had an idea that they may be a business seller. Because normal users who will have 5 broken consoles of a same model
This is an amazing series! I suggest adding into the title that you are a amature! It'll make the comical aspect of your series more apparent to ward off any troll yeah? i love taking items apart, and watching you jump head first was inspirational! I wish you luck, and optimization my friend, this is a great little bit. Suuuubscribed.
My Mate VINCE please please subscribe to my channel and i will subscribe back to you🔔🔔🔔🔔🔔but i just need one more subscriber and i finally have 50 subscribers
I must admit these fx videos are very interesting and yes yes you are right you don't have a clue but it's like it's a miracle that it ends up working after all so isn't that weird sometimes
It's pretty clear they all have the same problem. They could have been straightforward in the posting. He took a gamble, but the seller didn't have any integrity.
RetroMochi The seller knew exactly why they were faulty but didn't say in the listing, they knew what they were doing. Its why I wouldn't buy faulty consoles from sellers that look like stores and they're never going to be "untested" like they say.
Don't feel too disheartened. You can still play virtual console games so that's pretty good consellation considering these are great emulating machines. =)
For me who lives in Mexico I think it was a good buy. The replacement screens are cheap on Ali express. Here, you pay 80 usd just for one of those broken 2ds
You win some, you lose some Vince. Great idea though. I agree that it's still worth keeping an eye out for an economical screen. Thanks for all the great ideas.
If a business seller on eBay says something ambiguous or unclear, they definitely mean that is broken. Never believe a business seller saying "untested" or "unknown". If they are that stupid or lazy, they wouldn't be able to have a business at all.
hey vince, a fellow novice repair person here and i just wanted to say that i really enjoy watching your videos. wish i was able to buy all of your stuff that you are not able to fix yourself as i would like to try my hand at getting the things running
that one guy who watches and knows with regret that one of those are his broken 2ds xl's and that he deep down has remorse knowing full well that it is unsalvageable because several people tried to fix it and failed.
A classmate just told me he said to nintendo service that the screen was broken and he just paid 30€ and got a new one. It was a 2DS though. Just ask and tell me what happens
I recommend the New 3DS and the New 3DS XL because you can replace your rechargeable batteries. I do not recommend the New 2DS XL because Nintendo will not let you replace your rechargeable battery. I hate Nintendo sometimes.
Vince! What you should do is make a working 2DS XL With all of those broken 2DSes and even make an awesome color pallet with it! like swap the orange buttons with the black ones!
Are these "New" 2DS XLs? If so, you can flash a custom firmware to enable live screen casting. You could then use a TV or monitor as your top "screen."
having semi functioning 2DS' will come in handy! you've got parts to swap around and so forth. Can't wait for the next part if you ever get your hands on either a screen, or a new system to repair!! This is how we learn, by trying :Dø
Man the new 2ds xl screens are shit, i had mine in my pocket, came home and there were 3 huuuge cracks on the actual screen, but not on the screen protector. This means that a $1 screen protector from china is better than an official expensive nintendo screen. Save your money and buy a new 3ds xl instead, those have better screens and they're in 3d.
I already have a new Nintendo 2DS Xl. And is fine for now. But I bout digital games. And is very late for me to upgrade to a new Nintendo 3DS XL because I thon't remember my password for me to transfer data. I have to be extrimly careful.
It's really fun watching your videos and coming along for the ride. Even if it doesn't work out. I found screens for cheap on aliexpress. I'm sure you could replace them now and re-sell them no problem.
It's crazy how for the Pokemon 3 DS I was like if you play Mario Kart 7 on it and wouldn't be that bad and you brought all Mario Kart 7 and I was like I was using that for an example in my head and you really showed us an example
Subbed, I need to see how this saga ends! Would love to see you have a go at some older nintendo handhelds, naturally they get more complex as time goes on, so you might have better luck with the original DS or some GBAs.
Aww man you were absolutely done over. I bought a real job lot of 20 faulty and untested 3ds xl's and out of the 20 I got, about 5 or 6 had broken top or bottom screens and the rest had a mix of other fault issues. As soon as I'd bought them and paid I realised that there was a possibility that all the top screens could be broken. But the seller said no further testing done.. I'd have been royaly screwed of they had done what you had done. But luckily the seller was honest and they really were all broken and the faults were a real mix. None had games but they had sd's between 2 and 32gb
Ive found its always a bad idea to buy a lot of broken items like this. It almost guarantees youre getting a pile of crap someone else didnt deem worth fixing.
