saw this in theaters and towards the end when lou tells jackie "there's nothing wrong with you" EVERYONE in the room made some kind of "ehh... i mean...." disagreement noises. there's so many things wrong with her
Thats the point of the movie tho.. right? Lou wants JJ dead for what he did (i mean understandable) but then forgives Jackie bc she loves her even though she hated when Beth forgave JJ over and over, I dont think that the message was everyone sucks except the lesbian couple 😂
i have so many feelings about this movie 😭 i think one of the main points was to analyze how toxic lesbian/wlw relationships can be by comparing Lou's relationship with her sister's. Its super easy for us to admonish lou's sister for staying w her abusive husband but at the end of the day lou also chooses to stay with someone who pushes her to betray her morals and puts her in objectively terrible situations
Didn't see this movie but when the sister shouts that Lou doesn't know anything about love, Lou proceeds to choke and hurt her sister for her own motives, just like JJ would.
Especially in relation to her father. He could've been abusive to her mother which feeds into why the sister wants to "stay and fight" despite the violence. Everything seems justified and handled in a depressing, but almost eriely calm manner. It also possibly calls in the question of "femme fatals"
And also that it goes both ways, arguably most of the plot might not have happened if Lou didn't offer Jackie steroids. And the way Lou grabbed her sisters face when she needed answers?? Oop yeah girlie you more like your dad than you think lmao
At a glance ( not having seen the movie, where context is usually pretty important for metaphors ) the throwing up Lou could be either ‘purging’ herself of the relationship or linking her disintegrating stability with the loss of or separation from Lou. Lou was the gateway to the steroids, to the escalation into murder, but ejecting Lou from her system leaves her only with the violence, without the twisted tenderness entwined in it. I thought it was an interesting note to end on the attempt to dispose of the body and falling back into old habits. Feels like a story that doesn’t have a pat moral lesson, just a surreal reflective storytime about screwed up humans being in a screwed up world and trying to eke out maladaptive intimacy and affection amongst it. I’m putting it in my list. My long list I pretend I’ll finish someday but I’m at least putting it on
I haven't seen the movie either but just based on what we're given in the video that was sort of my interpretation as well. If Jackie's hallucinations are indicative of what her emotions are and we know that she actually does throw up, then having us see Lou could be the movies way of saying that Jackie has become addicted to steroids because they are what brought her close to Lou, almost as if they are a physical representation of their bond. To Jackie, the drugs really are Lou in both that they were provided by her but also they have both become a source of her dependence. I'm not one for outright/ over the top gore but I may have to put that aside to watch this movie, it does seem like a very interesting watch and a good source of discourse.
@@raindawnson9254 I like your thoughts a lot, I think you put it in a really intriguing way and I'm making a mental note to come back and revisit when/if I get around to it
0:03 Same here. Not even a rap fan but I'm so engrossed in this beef and Kendrick's lines have been stuck in my head for the WHOLE WEEK. I be shouting 'what is it, THE BRAIDS?!' at the air and getting looks from my family 😂
I think it really shows that she transitioned from an abusive father relationship to an abusive partner relationship, as they both use her. She's able to see her sister's relationship as abusive, but she can't see how her relationship is also abusive. She wants love from Jackie so much that she'll be her henchman.
I know Katy O'Brian and I'm very excited to watch this movie. She's from my city and we took acting classes together before she moved to LA. She's an incredibly nice person.
my friend described this movie as “the most sonically upsetting experience I’ve ever had” and I haven’t stopped thinking about it since (I agree tho, the squelching noises were worse than the gore for me)
this movie feels similar to the magical realism genre!!! i love it. it doesn’t ALL make sense, but i think the reason she gets so big at the end is symbolic of her swelling with the strength of love or some shit 😭 this movie’s kinda bananas in such a brutal way but i love it!
LOVED THIS MOVIE. So, lesbian and funny ❤️ so campy, suspenseful and so magically real(within the real of a Hollywood movie lol). In Latin America we grow up knowing about the use of Magical Realism (coined by Isabel Allende - using seemingly magical images or scenes in a non-fantasy/realist story) to convey character development in a book or film. So, reading or knowing about Magical Realism and then watching the movie helps a lot. It’s used from beginning to end. Every time there was cartoonish depictions of her muscles, them growing into giants, her hallucinating on stage (after too much trauma and steroids) depicts the changes or mixing of feelings going on within her and how those are interacting with reality. Like her puking Kristen’s character was her body trying to purge the one who seemingly poisoned her w steroids in this case. It’s just a different way of showing character growth. So the movie remains real, it’s not fantasy, but fantasy is used to convey character growth. 💕💕 can’t wait to watch it again. And yes, plz do a video on the Drake beef 🤣.
YES DO THE BEEFDIVE. Its like a deep dive but about the beef. I was so excited to see you on Olay and Friends and it would be delightful to hear your retelling/thoughts.
Its good to go in blind to many movies... but sometimes some level of weird would be nice to know ahead. And I dont care, LOVE weird. I prefer it. But I'd like others to not poorly judge stuff out of shock of HOW weird some stuff is.
Personally I would love a reaction video and by June it will be over so we will have all tracks. For reference though because everyone is acting shocked about Drake and his predilection for teen girls here are the women he had mentioned himself Sza was 17 back in 08. The model he posted and rapped about in 3 songs taking shots at her ex was 16 in the photo he posted 18 when he was making his songs. And none of the young ladies he chose to mentor Millie and Billy were over 18 and he stopped once they were. He also doesnt text young boys in the industry just girls 😌 Okay now to Kennies current review.
Throwing up his whole body sounds to me like a metaphor for her feeling sick to her stomach with guilt and maybe the regret of her actions making her imagine “birthing” him a new life? Or he’s a burden she’s trying to expel from her body?
You should watch Civil War! It's another A24 movie about civil war breaking out in the modern US, but from the perspective of journalists. It's interesting!
I ate a big thing of popcorn while watching this movie, ate it, and then promptly puked as soon as I was outside the theater. This movie is nasty but I do love sapphics so… 6/10
This all sounds like the genre: magical realism. I first learned about it from reading Tropic of Orange by Yamashita. I’m interested to watch the movie now cause I don’t have much exposure to this genre either tbh but I did enjoy what I saw from it
I was so excited to see Kennie uploaded!!! I love her hair here too, gorgeous as always 💗💗💗 (I've been following the beef, and I'd very much enjoy seeing Kennie's perspective on it 😂)
Yes please, the diss video would be great 🥰 I would plan a whole occasion around that video 🥹 order in and watch it with some friends. We’re obsessed with the beef, it’s honestly hilarious 😂 Love you Kennie ✌🏾
The throwing-up-an-entire-guy scene isnt too deep. Ppl get a pit in their stomach and sometimes vomit from anxiety. So shes throwing up whats making her anxious. At lest thats my take on it, not having seen the movie. Haha
Kennie! If you’re doing a video on Baby Reindeer have you seen that the real Martha came out and did an interview on Piers Morgan? There’s also been some articles about Gadd coming out if you wanted to check them out
people are so weird about KStew's acting. idk i think she does subtly and vulnerability really well? big emotions are so easy to tap into but all of her performances seem genuine. who do y'all consider good actors? i'm curious
to me the end scene with Jackie (besides being a giantess fetish scene) was Lou's hyper drugged out /traumatized super idealist image of Jackie, considering she was living under her Dads thumb and her mom was gone, witnessing lots of abuse caused by men = big strong protective woman crushing her Dad being an ideal image in her mind
I think one of the things that was so awesome about this movie was that Jackie and Lou are both the shitty boyfriend archetype. Lesbian rep and movies about lesbians has gone up but this was one of the few examples I've seen of deadbeat boyfriend lesbians and it was stellar to see. Diversity win!!! Your girlfriend can be a pos too!!
honestly, i’m so glad kristen stewart was FINALLY able to beat the “bad acting” allegations. i love the twilight movies because of how campy they are, but thank god she was able to find other roles that suited her talents wayyyyy better 😭
Do you guys remember when she was having an affair with a married director and was friends with the wife. Its always wonderful to see how easily the public gives a clean slate to their favourite celebrity 😄
@@mochimellow4188 oh ofc you will say that lol, like that man Is more influential than kristen stewart right now lmao. 🤣 like the cognitive distortion omg, you guys go through mental hoops to defend actions of terrible people.
Kennie, you forgot the part with Jackie calling her family, and her brother and mother says something hinting to her doing something horrible and that she isn’t welcome back home. That made me think about if she had done something similar in the past👀
Omg yes! Honestly I was expecting her to reveal that she killed someone before the two recent kills, when she said "Lou I killed people" I don't think it would bother Lou anyway (Lou has also killed ppl), but I thought it'd be interesting if it's shown that it's not necessarily the "roid rage" making her do it, she just has that in her already.
she did have gloves when she unclogged the toilet. the sound design on this movie is INSANE esp in theaters, so i vividly remember the sound of kristen taking off the gloves and shooting them in the trash. i’m glad to have seen it in theaters tho. it felt like the room was silent bc it was SO engrossing. speaking of sound design, the “music” used immediately had tension built from the start and it felt like the tension only disappeared in like the last 10 minutes maybe. my friend and i wanted to see it again but it got taken out so quick 💔 glad we got the experience tho.
i think the symbolism of her body building is trying to become physically/mentally strong enough to not "lose" to men or have to be fearful of them. esp given that she gets bigger after killing him it implies that she "ate" him or won over him/took the power she perceives from strength/masculinity from him, which to makes sense when she later throws him up.
my fave line is “LOVE YOU SIS!” shouted so aggressively after being called a monster LMFAOO my friend and i couldn’t stop shouting that after the movie cuz we were HOLLERING when that happened
Seeing that Lou was the one that gave her the substance. Lou was the handler of that substance. Her being by herself and Lou not being there. Now she sees that she's out of control and she threw up Lou, meaning she threw away that signifier of control that she had over the drug over the substance. And over herself.
i felt like the movie was about addiction pretty explicitly tbh. the characters are shown to have plenty of vices throught the film-- Lou with her smoking (and being drawn to the power of firearms/violence that she tries to repress througout most of the movie), Jackie with the steroids and also working out (which is also largely a power thing, wanting to be physically formidable)-- which I think the movie uses to also present love as a kind of addiction. Lou and Jackie's relationship is pretty starkly paralleled to Beth and J.J.'s relationship. Not at first obv, but later on when things start going off the rails and Jackie starts to turn her physical strength against Lou, and Lou going to these crazy lengths to help her and keep her at her side anyway. And the whole thing is tangled up in power. I like that a lesbian romance being at the center is almost circumstantial, like none of the violence happens BECAUSE they're lesbians, but both of them being women in a patriarcal world is very relevant imo, and I think informs both of their relationships to the concept of power, and how that ends up twisting their relationship. and lol yeah I think all the muscle-giant stuff was definitely figurative of Jackie feeling and being strong and powerful, and Lou being deeply attracted to that. That's why at the end they're both giants as they run away, because they're feeling powerful and free. It's been a while since I saw the film and eloquence is not my strong suit, but lol yeah that's how I read it
I've been very depressed. Looking for motivation to keep going in life. But I will be damned if I'm not gonna live long enough to see that Baby Reindeer video.
hope you feel better!! life has its ups and downs but realize the up is coming soon!! drink water and eat your favorite food. things will get better. corny as it sounds. ❤ take care of yourself
Watch more films. I swear, it’s the only thing that kept me going. Find unique ones on streaming, find independent file debuting in your city (they’re usually cheaper!) Just find films to see. Not only does if give you something to look forward to, a hobby, and a community- it exposes you to so many different stories, and helps you feel less alone.
It's the little things that keep most of us going, nothing wrong with that 😊 I send you all the best. I remember when Saturdays were the only thing keeping me going for her 30 minute videos. It helps
