Recent R.871 Video: • Let's Get This Tri-ang...
Earlier R.871 Video: • Tri-ang Running Sessio...
Hello again, after a recent video featuring the Maroon Coronation, R.871 from Tri-ang Hornby I put the original motor from the loco to one side as it was drawing huge amounts of current and getting very warm. In this video I revisit the faulty X04 motor and see what I can do with it to return it to good running order. Thanks for looking, I look forward to your comments

Fantastic result Mr S. shows what the X.04 is capable of following maintenance in the right hands: silent and pulling 200mA

I was definitely pleased to see it was not drawing too much current, especially as I didn't remagnetise it. Thanks for watching. All the best to you

If it’s been over oiled for a long time it’s also worth changing the isolating sleeve on the brush spring as they degrade with time and oil.
@MrSnooze
@MrSnooze Год назад
That's an interesting point you raise there. I've had a couple of motors where the brush mounting has deteriorated and cracked, so excess oil could be the reason. This one is still fine thankfully. When I change the mounting I always thread the motor and secure the new item with a little bolt as opposed to re riveting. Thanks for looking, all the best to you

I'm pleased you enjoyed seeing this repair, it did indeed turn out well, I was worried the armature might be toast. Thanks for looking, all the best to you

Great improvement to the X04. The increased resistance must be down to the carbon contamination between the commutator segments being cleaned out and would have caused excess current draw as you were experiencing before. Nice neat soldering! Look forward to seeing 31337; I was given the Dublo 2 rail version of that last year from a loft clear out; it was in a terrible mess; a broken wire between winding and commutator was a devil to fix and I sacrificed a turn on the winding to sort it but it is now a great runner. A pleasure to watch this video as always. Best wishes.

That sounds like a great repair on that R1 armature, I have been lucky enough to fix an armature by that method, I don't think one turn will make a huge difference. Take care, all the best to you

It's amazing what a service can do for performance on a 50 or 60 year old motor, I was guilty of over oiling in the past. Looking forward to seeing the wren 060 next week looks like it was made yesterday, all the best.

Thanks for looking, there is no doubt that too much oil can lead to trouble. Take care, all the best to you

Nice work. A good clean is always nice to refresh these old motors. She really does run well now. My not so perfect R.871 version arrived last week and looks good running on the Series 3 layout. They look quite the Pair the R.864 and R.871 together. Lovely to see yours rejuvenated and back in tip top condition. Stay safe. Mon

So all it needed was a bit of TLC, fantastic to see the locomotive running well and quite with its original motor.

Snooze, Enjoyed that, as usual. Perhaps worth replacing the brushes on the off-chance years of soaking in oil infiltrating their structure. If so the motor will soil quickly. Just wondering. Pete.

Hello Pete, that's an interesting point about the oil soaking into the carbon. I have not yet found brushes that once properly cleaned have given trouble, however it is something I will now look out for. All the best to you

Great video, Could i please just ask what pins have you used in your point motors. They dont look original on the video and im looking for an alternative as i find the original ones a bit clumpy. Cheers

Great results there! I've re-soldered commutators on a couple of locomotive X04 motors. Although eventually successful I had difficulty getting the solder to stay on the copper. Took a few careful attempts! Did you use a flux paste? Leaded or unleaded solder? Thanks
@MrSnooze
@MrSnooze Год назад
It is a problem to solder these sometimes, I did use a pinprick of flux paste, it helps so much. All the best to you

If it had a short what would be the solution?
@MrSnooze
@MrSnooze Год назад
If there was a short, it would almost definitely mean an armature rewind. Thanks for looking at the video, best regards to you

Hi, just curious, by flattened off the carbons, do you mean you sanded the metal parts soldered to the brass flat? (Sorry, not familiar with proper lingo) Is it advisable for an older triang motor to have flattened these parts? A few of mine are really ground down into a "U" shape. Great video though :)
@MrSnooze
@MrSnooze Год назад
I just refaced the carbon part of the brush ( the black bit that rubs on the commutator ) you don't have to do it especially on very worn brushes but these were nearly new so it gives them a chance to bed in again nicely. Thanks for watching, all the the best to you
