The “guess who’s back?” is a reference to not just Mr. McBride, but also to this visit to some old friends in the form of some of the very first mines we ever explored. And, of course, to the Forest Service that is back causing mischief in this area… I wish they would just leave what is left here alone, but there are a lot of things I wish for that are not going to happen.
Ha, as I alluded to in our adventure of getting the Jeep unstuck when I mentioned that we were out of water - this was a long day… As with any exploring trip, there were other problems as well. We severed a brake line on a sharp rock, but, fortunately, Mr. McBride had installed independent brakes. So, losing one line meant that we lost only the back brakes rather than the front and back brakes. This made the severed brake line an annoyance rather than catastrophic. Issues with the engine overheating when we were grinding up some of those mountainsides… Getting stuck, of course! The absolutely out of control mosquitoes… All of that is to say that the cold beer at a local saloon after the day of exploring was very welcome!
Since we visited multiple mines on this day, I am simply linking to the prior videos of these mines. If anyone is interested in what I know of the history of a particular mine, it will be in the descriptions below the original videos. Otherwise, I would not have the space to share the history of each mine here.
The exception is the very first mine we visited, which the Forest Service had closed up. I know nothing of the history of that mine. The Forest Service linked it to the Union-Keystone Mine, but I can emphatically state that it had nothing to do with the Union-Keystone. The Union-Keystone was an underground placer gold mine and was working in an entirely different manner and area than this small lode prospect that the Forest Service recently destroyed.
The Union-Keystone Mine
• The Union-Keystone Min...
The Faro-Quartz Mine
• Exploring The Faro Qua...
The Roberts Mine
• Exploring The Abandone...
The Black Diamond Mine (It’s amazing that I need to say this, but this is NOT the same mine as the famous one in the Bay Area)
• A Return To The Lower ...
• The Black Diamond Mine
Among the mines seen in this video, it is my understanding that the Faro Quartz is slated to be destroyed next. However, all of the mines are on their radar and will be destroyed sooner rather than later.

*****
Growing up in California’s “Gold Rush Country” made it easy to take all of the history around us for granted. However, abandoned mine sites have a lot working against them - nature, vandals, scrappers and various government agencies… The old prospectors and miners that used to roam our lonely mountains and toil away deep underground are disappearing quickly as well.
These losses finally caught our attention and we felt compelled to make an effort to document as many of the ghost towns and abandoned mines that we could before that colorful niche of our history is gone forever. But, you know what? We enjoy doing it! This is exploring history firsthand - bushwhacking down steep canyons and over rough mountains, figuring out the techniques the miners used and the equipment they worked with, seeing the innovations they came up with, discovering lost mines that no one has been in for a century, wandering through ghost towns where the only sound is the wind... These journeys allow a feeling of connection to a time when the world was a very different place. And I’d love to think that in some small way we are paying tribute to those hardy miners that worked these mines before we were even born.
So, yes, in short, we are adit addicts… I hope you’ll join us on these adventures!

It's such a shame they block up old mines. They do it around here as well, both mines and bunkers, luckly two things are in our favour: they are very bad at their job and we have shovels and battery-powered equipment. Already opened up a bunker and a mineshaft so far, and still going strong.

When Australia had those Bush Fires, the Wombat became an unsung hero due to the burrows that they dig. The animals hid in the burrows, to avoid the fire! The Forest Service should use not close the caves, because if a forest fire were to occur, the caves would be shelter! The mines are History!

Hi Justin, the forest service have a lot to answer for as they have destroyed or hidden so much history going right back to the pioneer days in some places. The wording on that valve/tap at 10:08 reads Powell 1 Pilot. Dang those tree's were absolutely huge, how old do you think they are ??. I'm pretty sure the 3 rings on the bottle are for Ballantine Ale. That was a close call but glad you managed to get the Jeep out, those were some spectacular views you were treated to, wow absolutely beautiful. The remains of the engine at 10.21 is very interesting! I would guess the engine dates back to the very early 1900's due to its construction. Meaning the cylinders were separate castings bolted to the bottom end or crankshaft housing instead of one continuous casting containing both.

The mine seems remote enough not to be a danger to me.... That foam is flammable, just fyi. Ive read articles about how they have to re-spray after a forest fire... Idea? Maybe if you had fire fighting tools with you, don't breath it in and let the adit air out for a day! The FS has been busy this year and had just recently filled up a mine right down the road from me that only went in about 15 ft. I was able to re-open it just to make a point as it seems like the destruction team half-assed it. They even installed a culvert and a stay out stay alive sign... How much do you think they spent on that little project just to protect who knows who from a 15 ft hole???

A couple questions... 1, I understand the forest service filling in the shaft to keep people from being injured/killed trying to go where they shouldn't, but why the spray foam? 2, You've said in other videos that you carry an air meter to monitor O2 levels, but do you ever get sick from being in contaminated water or do you worry about bacteria or mold from the moisture in some of the mines?

That sucks with the Jeep. I had a same year Chevy S-10 that did that one day in the snow. Turns out it was an electric solenoid lever on the front axle that engages the hubs that went out. I think that year Jeep had the same thing but worse it is a vacuum activated switch. There are some field temporary methods to fix those issues though.

As I was studying fire maps I was thinking these might be good places to mine explore next year. Most of the fires are on Federal land (Forestry and BLM). There will be less brush to fight to get to locations, and some new bulldozer fire roads to help get to places. Like up in Plumas National Forest, and up around Sacramento Mountain north of Whiskeytown. I'm not sure if that is Federal or CalFire land up there. But these fires might distract them from putting in so much time closing mines. I know you're not a prospector, but these areas might also be good for placer mining next year if we get some good rains this winter. With the underbrush burned off there will be a lot of erosion and new soil washed down into the creeks and rivers. Though suction dredges are no longer legal in California, (I think) you can still highbank and run a sluice. There could be gold in the new overburden :>

The Forest Service has got to the point of pathetic. Had a buddy with a high level position with the USFS. He retired early due to cover-ups of various federal violations, including the use and storage of explosives. He tried to blow the whistle but it always got swept under the rug. In addition, they waist taxpayers money with contracting totally unnecessary mine closures. They also do virtually nothing to control bark beetle infestations. Entire sections of fir forest are being wiped out in the West. In some places it takes only a few years. Once these forests are dead, they become an extreme fire hazard. These are just a few examples what's going on with the USFS.

They make a kit to put the front axel lock in . Its basically a throttle idle cord like in big trucks that you can pull it out and turn the idle up. Its about 200 bucks again ( about ) .the front actuator is air-driven. Look at the front axle where the actuator is in the stew tube nipples that stick out of it sometimes they rust off sometimes they break off and sometimes it's just an airline leak on the lines running that. I switched mine over to that cable and I've never had a problem with it since. I've been in that position where you guys were and it's no fun. I'm not saying that this is your problem that you're having because I'm not there can't look at it however this is a common problem with that front locking actuator
@MDRoutdooradventures
@MDRoutdooradventures 3 года назад
Them jeeps have a severe issue with the axel actuator failing as it works off of vacuum pressure.you can force them over in a pinch if you have tools handy.also air down your tires, it helps immensely with traction and smothers the ride a bit too.

I am super frustrated at the forest service in my area. I've recently taken up exploring old mine sites in Montana as we have some amazing hard rock mine history and so far I've only come across one location that is somewhat accessible - I did not have my gear at the time to go underground but I know where its at so I can go back. The rest have all been reclaimed by the forest service, unfortunately...

Oh, the destruction of abandoned mines is a huge scam! There are a large number of government employees and contractors that make a good living from it now though. If they were to stop finding "dangerous" abandoned mines that we needed to be "protected" from, they'd all be out of a job. So, guess what? Somehow they just keep finding more and more dangers that need to be made safe... The statistics about abandoned mines reveal the big lie. The majority of deaths connected to abandoned mines are drownings (people swimming in rock quarries) and vehicle accidents (racing an ATV or dirt bike around an old mine site and crashing). Do you see what a stretch it is to use those incidents as justification for the bulldozing of historic buildings and the sealing of mines on a massive scale?

@TVRExploring

Two types of gold mines - "Lode" and "placer"... They refer to how the gold is placed in its environment and so they're more specific terms to use than simply hard rock mining since, technically, both lode and placer can involve hard rock mining if one is chasing the ancient river channels and blasting through thousands of feet of rock to reach them.

At the Faro-Quartz, were there two pipes, or just one? The vid looked like there were two. The smaller one had a standard hose bib fitting, so was definitely water. The larger pipe had a valve which could be used for either water or air. Don't the drills use air for power and water for cooling?
@TVRExploring
@TVRExploring 3 года назад
I don't remember the number of pipes, but if they were drilling, there should have been a line for compressed air and one for water. So, yes, two lines. The water is to prevent dust rather than for cooling. Too many miners were dying from silicosis and so they modified the design of the drills to inject water into the hole being drilled.
