In Vic we had the expression of ‘empty esky’ after some bushfires a few years ago. Shop at the local country town to inject funds there as opposed to spending in the city at home. It always good to have the right tools for running repairs and knowing when to go to the experts. A raw and tough episode, but well done for being so honest about how life treats you some times.
I'm currently on the Gibb River Road, lost my hitch pin then the camper trailer went on a washout, got it back on, then lost 100Ltrs of water , my winch motor broke free of the bullbar. Finally at my next campground i need a beer and a bit of RU-vid. Your video cheered me up heaps, was good to have a laugh. Thanks Harry.
Fantastic episode, so glad you are back in the Pilbara, good to see some businesses look after people and don't charge a Pilbara Tax. There is just something about camping with a dog, they are almost an essential camp tool. Looking forward to the next episode
Pumped for these episodes! Fred so cute when he spotted Fred shaped moo cows 😂 I do worry about 1080, keep yourselves safe. I was very worried when you posted he was sick. So glad he bounced back. Full face in the water bowl too funny. Glad the fellas on the tools got you back on the road 🙌
Mate i agree, the toughest most reliable tyre Ive ever ran, hands down Toyo MT. Ive just worn out my set of 33's and gone to Nitto Ridge Grapplers, always wanted to try them!
I’m on for Nitto’s too! Such a killer tyre, was genuinely surprised with them.. key tool out bush is 100% some good tyres. Loving this style of vid Harry!
Glad Fred’s doing better. I’ve had a transmission not shift and get hot too. Had to overhaul the darn thing. Nothing like not having the right “tools” when you need them with, and they’re all back home.
rough start to the trip, car troubles are never fun. I learnt the hard way to never leave home without my tools. also agree with the choice of Nittos. I ran the 295s on my Hilux for a few years
Tools! I drove past your car and van in marble bar the other week, I would have stopped in at the iron clad to say g’day but had a tight schedule to make it back to hedland.. Can confirm that CB make terrible rear windows. Good to see Fred back to his usual self mate
I have 2017 Fortuner with 6 speed auto transmission, and Richards lockup kit, basically same as you. I only tow in 4th gear, 5th and 6th are weak gears and cannot handle all that power. I always tow in S4, you won't even need to use the lock up kit. Trans will lock up by itself around 70kph if in S4. If you get a different lock up kit and keep pushing in 5th and 6th while towing the same thing will happen. I tried towing in 5th gear, I've had a 'tune' and yes the engine does it easy, engine temps do go up 2 deg but that's not much, the trans stays cool cause no slip but the pressure going through those little 5th of 6th gears is too much when towing, just look how much boost you are using. I am no expert, this is my opinion based on my real world experience. Great vids, luv your work !
The problem with the Richards kit is not related to which gear you tow in. It’s that it puts 12v in to a 6v solenoid which burns it out prematurely leaving you with no lockup in any gear. I was left having to use 3rd because the relay burnt out. We tested it and it was conclusively the issue.
Mine failed after 100k so keep an eye on it. I don’t have a lockup kit any more. We removed it. I tried towing in S4 and my gearbox hit 140deg within 2min! I had to go down to S3 and limited to 80kmh where it usually happily tows at 100kmh with 80deg gearbox temps. It was the kit that caused the issue
Tools!.. wow thats bad luck ive had the stocklock lock up kit for 70thousands kms in my 2018 prado bulk towing not one drama .. i believe it uses pulse width modulation which is better... ive heard the richards one can give you grief... interesting my trans temps never go over 90ish 4th gear and watch it lock on the sg3..
So glad Fred was OK, we lost a dog on a cross country drive, long story but not able to get to a vet in time so this vid was a bit nervy. Good news on the transmission too, looking forward to the next one!
I bought an old esky, i have drilled on the sides at the top. Made a grate. Aluminium with holes and sandwiched with shade cloth. Made some plastic pipe super ice blocks. Now i have cold storage for vegetables and fruit. Freeing up the fridge.
Hi Harry, only "TOOLS" get stuck up North with crook Relays. All the best to Fred, hope all is well with him now. Good luck with the broken car [still watching the last 3/4 of vid] Greetings from Perth, West Australia. Cheers, Frank.
I've been following for a while, this video is definitely up there with one of my favorites, including the Bone Marrow steak and eggs. Awesome , awesome video. Glad Fred is on the mend and your car is sorted. Keep up the awesome work Harry. Watching from South Africa 🇿🇦
Awesome video. Glad that Fred is well. Most unfortunately that the car broke down, guess it goes with the territory. At least you’re resilient and have a laugh. Keep the shiney side up.
Big decision on what tools to take away and what u don’t need, Fred is such a great boy, man’s best friend, so frustrating mechanical problems far from home
Loved this weeks video… it truly was a series of unfortunate events, but you kept smiling! Lucky you escaped picking up “TOOLS” and had experts get you back on road!
Hey Harry, loved the episode and glad all turned out ok. Did the vet say what happened to Fred? Good to see a smile back on his big lovable face. Cheers mate.
Don't you just love it when you're so excited for a trip and everything just seems to go bloody wrong. Glad you got the car sorted and glad Fred is ok. How much was that reverse camera/mirror? I've been wanting to do an Always on system like that in the Pajero.
@@firetofork Cheers mate. Would come in very handy when the back of the car is packed up or I have my small trailer on as I can't see that in any mirrors unless I'm turning.
I miss camping and 4wding. Unfortunately I'm legally blind and can't drive anymore. Occasionally a friend or more will take me camping or 4wding but usually close proximity to Perth. Been 4wding up Broome way three years ago and it was wicked! Really wish I could explore more of WA but alas :'( glad I can do it through your videos.
Not sure if I've missed something here Harry but isn't the aim to hold your transmission in 4th gear when towing? I haven't read it for myself (I also own a 22 Prado and tow a 15ft hybrid) but I'm told the owner's manual also recommends this. My belief is that the transmission will continually 'slip' in the higher gears (i.e. 5th/6th) when towing resulting in higher temperatures. I understand that the whole point of a lock-up kit is to stop gearbox slippage. Anyhow, I diligently monitor my temps (especially Transmission and EGT) when towing (use Scangauge) and have noted that the temp difference when towing in 4th rather than 5th is fairly significant (have a Richard's lock-up kit installed) and also despite expectations, it actually uses less fuel in 4th gear. The only time I knock it into 5th is when I'm going downhill and there is very little load on the engine. I also run 265/70/17 tyres which I believe are marginally bigger diameter than standard but even so, I am unable to even get into 6th gear when not towing. With the even bigger tyres you have fitted, surely this would only be more pronounced in your case. Again, not sure if I've missed something so my apologies if I've got my lines crossed with this 🤔
It locks up with no slip in 4th, 5th and 6th. Mine usually sits in 5th locked up and very cool. Bare in mind I have a lot more power than standard (around 700nm of torque) so with the stock tune I would absolutely be in 4th.
Mate, love your videos. Such an honest bloke. Can I ask a question around the family? How do you general set yourself up conversation wise and how does it go with the mrs having two little ones at home and heading off on a little “holiday” on your own …. understandably this is your job but none the less its time away from family right
I only go on 2 long trips a year and it’s how I make a living. I am home much more than someone working a 9-5 so overall the family is better off me doing this job. Usually I am only away 1 night every 2 weeks
I recommend you go to cape Keraudren while you're up there. One of the best bits of coastline up that way. City of Port Hedland lists it as a top place to visit, but its always been East PIlbara.
@@firetofork No you monsters! . Haha but that's fair its not the best time of year for it, would be super windy. If you got a chance to chat with the ranger up there he's a good guy.
Glad to see Fred up and about, check with your vet, but it may be helpful to carry charcoal chews in case Fred accidentally ingests something that could cause him harm. Great video glad all turned out ok in the end
Hey mate, the wild troopy you seen at the airport is actually a Wireline Loggin Truck to log drilled exploration holes. It works a bit like a crane to send 'Tools' down the hole which log depth, verticality and also water depth, diameter etc. Bit of handy info for you as I imagine you'd see a few of these travelling up and down the WA coast
perhaps sme study into basic risk identification and management would belp - mind you, most of us carry enough reserve to see us thru - really good of you to share the good and the bad - at least you got to the bottom of the transmission issue
I think I saw you on the way between Nanutarra and Karatha on the road as I was heading south out of K-Town. Sorry to hear that things got a bit hectic, but damn, how good is the Pilbara weather in July?
Might just need to look at your driving style with the heavier van. I’ve come across people before passing through the Pilbara struggling with gear box temps because they leave the car in drive and try to sit in top gear
32:22 Thing with a crane on top of it, bore hole wireline unit runs various instruments up and down exploration drill holes refereed too as down hole tools. They'll have some where between a 1000-2000m winch inside for the Pilbara typically a Cobalt 60 gamma source. The geophysical data is put into the model that also contains the information from the chemical and the geological observations of the rig geologist to define the resource. Surprised to see someone still running troopies most companies moved away from them the 1VD was a bit of a disaster for the application when compared to the old 1HZ. Yes they drive like crap and do not under any circumstances buy an ex wireline unit, the engine typically runs 10 hours a day mostly idling it won't have many kms but 10 000hours plus is not unusual.
