Bulgaria - the first and last country to have a tsar. :)
@thebj2701
@thebj2701 6 лет назад
gromaniak16 Tsar Simeon I was the Bulgarian who created the title "Tsar". History says he pronouced himself as a Tsar of Bulgaria in 913 AD. Tsar Simeon I was born in 864 AD and died in 927 AD. The first Bulgarian Tsar was crowned in 913 AD while the first Russian Tsar was crowned in 1547 AD. More than 600 years difference and more than a proof that Bulgaria created this title. Also our first Golden Century was during his reign and Bulgaria was in its biggest extent owning almost all of the Balkans. :)

The title tsar is actually the Bulgarian version of the title Cesar. The First Bulgarian tsar was Simon the Great, who became tsar in the 10. century. The first Russian tsar was Ivan I., who became tsar in the late 15. century, more than five centuries after tsar Simon the Great.

His Grandson, Simeon Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, was briefly Tsar of Bulgaria at the tail end of WW2 and went into a Spanish exile when the country went under Communist rule. When communism ended, Simeon returned and was actually elected prime minister. He was one of only two former monarchs to democratically take power of their former domains. (The other was from Cambodia). Take that, history!

As a child I drew maps of the local woods and added areas to my "domain" as I explored them. I made my own flag. I built forts and outpost in different areas of my domain. My slightly younger brother did the same and carved out his own domain in opposition to mine. We went to war several times over a contested pond. Shot at each other with BB guns and threw firecrackers at each other's fort demanding that the other lower his flag. We finally came to an agreement that we would merge our kingdoms with me as King (naturally) with my brother taking the title of Grand Duke, my right hand and subservient only to me. We designed a new flag. This was in the mid 90's. We didn't have cable t.v. Of course cell phones and internet weren't a thing yet. We came up with this stuff as we went. Makes me wonder what lurks in our bloodline.

I'm Bulgarian and interested in history, just want to say that your videos are great. Keep up the good work. Secondly I really hate Ferdinand (even though I really respect his son tzar Boris III (he is a complicated figure)). Ferdinand was not the only one, but one of the main reasons that drag us into WWI (which later led to a national catastrophe), and another reason for hate is the removal of Stefan Stambolov in 1894 (considered the greatest bulgarian Prime Minister). That's the reason why in Bulgaria, you can see a lot of things named after tzar Boris (like one of the main boulevards in Sofia or the Boris' Garden park), but almost nothing named after Ferdinand, opinions about him are negative in our history. You also mention the rebellion against him and Bulgaria's participation in WWI, my grand grand father was part of it, here is known as "the Soldiers rebellion" or "the Vladaisko rebellion", he then was sent to jail for for a year or two (not exactly sure, have to ask grandma). Keep making videos, they're very well made.

XennonLane Because the rebellion was against the goverment and a war that lasted too long, destroyed the economy and people have nothing to eat, but that also means that it was against Tzar Ferdinand, so of course that means jail. After the war in 1919, PM of Bulgaria became Aleksandar Stamboliyski (leader of the agrarian party), Ferdinand fell from power, and the PM gave pardon to the rebels.

King Boris not only refused to fight the USSR but saved 50 000 Bulgarian Jews - the entire Bulgarian Jewish population. Although Bulgaria as all other Balkan countries signed the Trilateral Pact with Germany not a Single Bulgarian Jew was send to the concentration camps. Much different than Serbia, Greece and Romania where less than 8% combined of the Jewish population survived.

+Clay Ronso Hey, all the Balkan states wanted that at the time. Literally all of them except for Austria-Hungary, and they all had good leaders that could damn-well try. And Greece did try and was doing quite well, taking back all of Thrace (with an allied-occupied Constantinople) and marching straight for Ancyra, already deep into Asia Minor. Sadly though, numbers speak louder than bravery sometimes. Particularly when you're outnumbered by the hundreds of thousands, going up against Kemal and all of your allies have just abandoned you, your supply chains are strained, and you're shoulder-deep into enemy territory with a battle-line more stretched than a pornstar's vagina.

+PowermadNavigator No. It would be impossible for any of the small upstart nations to get much past Edirne. Constantinople wasn't just an open city for anyone close by to take, it was fortified, and you could well bet that the Ottomans wouldn't leave their capitol undefended. None of the Balkan nations stood a chance against the Ottomans on their own. Greece tried in the 1890s, and was soundly defeated. Even the Serbs and Bulgarians only achieved independence due to Russia. It's only wishful thinking, nationalistic wet dreams, and anti-islamic bigotry that fills your head with dreams of "WE COULD HAVE TAKEN IT!".

Without trying to sound overly emotional, I have to say that without tzar Ferdinand's efforts in developing natural sciences, botanics, zoology, even heraldics and his patronising of all arts, we wouldn't have been what we are today. The story of Ferdinand is a story of the finest days of Bulgaria. Despite beaten in 2 World Wars, and he himself - outliving his wives, sons and even generals, Bulgaria and Ferdinand were on the same track - a late-developed, but still not missed dream of what most of the East has missed - the Renaissance thinking. I, personally, value him as my favourite person from our contemporary history, although since the loss of both world wars and the onslaught of communism, he has been continiously demonized. Am I incorrect or was Saxe Coburg and Gotha also the house name of the current British royal family, at least prior to it being changed around 1917? Or is this just a case of similar sounding phonetically, but completely different in spelling and meaning kind of words?

+izonker I think they changed their name to remove association with Austria and Germany during the war, as part of the propaganda scheme. But yes, they were all one big family, playing chess together. You shouldn't forget that up until a year of WWI had passed, war was considered noble business, a sport for royals, like paintball is today maybe. The strongly negative connotations of war are modern ones, and only appeared as WWI dragged on too long and we saw people suffering and dying not in battle, but in waiting for battle.

+TheRhinehart86 Er, to avoid confusion, it bears pointing out that "cousin Nicky" was a Romanov while "cousin Willy" was a Hohenzollern. The House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha was the house of Prince Albert, consort of Queen Victoria. It became the royal house of England through this single marriage. So it wasn't that the three cousins belonged to the same House. They were related through Victoria, and that makes them distaff cousins. Sorry if that sounds pedantic. It's just that I've met people who continued insisting that all three were members of the same family due to severe misunderstanding of how European royals defined House. Victoria herself, being the legitimate monarch through birth succession, was a member of the House of Hanover, and if her uncle had succeeded the throne instead of her it would have stayed the House of Hanover.

One correction - Bulgaria maybe started the Second Balka war, but that was because Serbia has broken the contract and took the Macedonian lans, populated with Bulgarians. And we cannot call the initial conflict of Second Balkan war "Bulgarian start" - there were more than 200 small conflicts, caused by Serbs and Greeks, and finally the Bulgarian attack was the biggest of them.
@karakondzula1388
@karakondzula1388 8 лет назад
+иван иванов Serbs were the one who liberated Macedonia from Turks, and the deal was that both Serbia and Bulgaria engage Turks in Macedonia. Serbs even sent a brigade to help Bulgarians in liberating their own lands. After big powers took Albania from Serbia it was natural that they would keep Macedonia which was paid in blood. Both sides had some right and some wrongs, putting blame on anyone is silly, things just happened.
@ivaneurope
@ivaneurope 8 лет назад
+karakondzula Actually why Serbia wanted a bigger piece of Macedonia had some reasons - They've been promised access to the Adriatic, but were denied. Instead their promised Adriatic region went to the newly created Albanian state. And since the Serbs wanted compensation for this denial they laid claims on the disputed area in Macedonia. Bulgarian leaders were furious that Serbia were laying claims on Macedonia and that Serbia and Greece were planning to divide Macedonia (including the part promised for Bulgaria) for themselves. Feeling backstabed Bulgaria declared war on both nations and that backfired.
@ralitsapartinova257
@ralitsapartinova257 8 лет назад
+karakondzula Serbs did liberated Macedonia from Turks, but they had a contract with Bulgaria where exactly the border will pass. So, they just have broken it and besides, they were ready for total war against Bulgaria, and, beeing in alience with Greece and Romania, denied Bulgarian offers for truce in the very first day of the military action, and even killed some of the Bulgarian negotiators, who came to them under white flag .... As regards the blood, Serbs lost about 2000 men in the war, and Bulgaria lost 40 000, engaging the Turkish army in Trace. Besides, VMRO helped a lot to the Serb army, and also 7-th Rila division of the Bulgarian army - about 36 000 men. So yes, the fought for Macedonia, but they had an agreement for the Uncontested zone..... The only reason Bulgarians were not able to arrange some compromise with them was the fact, that Macedonian population is Bulgarian - how can you agrre to give them territories, which are not simply Otoman`s but are full with Bulgarians, specially when knowing how Serbs do treat them under occupation..
@ralitsapartinova257
@ralitsapartinova257 8 лет назад
+karakondzula Yes, Serbs snet brigade to Odrin, heavy guns and military hospital, but for God`s sake, the wanted the whole Macedonia for that. And yes, they were f..d up by the Austrians beeing denied to take the Albanian Adriatic coast, but where here is Bulgarian guilt???? They acted as Balkan thiefs, not as allies... No problem to take any territory, but those contested territories were full of Bulgarians! And you know, VMRO helped them a lot to get Turks South, but at the next day they started to kill and arrest VMRO members and to burn books and to clera the Bulgarian signs in the churches, some of them 1000 years old...In one town, they killed and burned one teacher only because he healed the Serbian king and the Bulgarian tsar in a speech...
@karakondzula1388
@karakondzula1388 8 лет назад
Ralitsa Partinova Bulgarians did the same thing to Romania. Nobody was innocent, its not like anyone trusted each other in blind way, we cant look at it like its a personal conflict between friends. Its politics, it could'a been anyone in Bulgaria's place. Bulgarians failed to establish better political relations and made terrible moves when they came out short. And we all know they messed up even more when WW1 broke out. Blaming Serbs and Greeks for playing better hands is silly, a but hurt child rhetoric for common people. Same thing when Serbs say that Bulgarian attack in WW1 was a stab in the back, like it was unexpected. Just saying we should go with ease when it comes to accusations, nobody benefits from it.

It was either a quick victory, or a slow defeat from the get go. Some interesting facts on the Tsar title It comes from the old Bulgarian pronounciation of Caesar - цѣсарь (cěsarĭ), similarly to the German Kaiser. In Medeival Bulgaria, it is accepted that it appeared in 927 AD when Petar was acknowleged as Tsar by the East Romans, altrough it is traditionally thought Petar's father Simeon was the first Tsar (even trough he declared himself as Basileus of Bulgars and Romans) In Kievan Rus, the earliest use of the title is between 1237-1240 AD. The main difference between the titles "King" and "Tsar" is that "Tsar" is "a supreme leader of an independent nation", While "King" is "a supreme ruler of a state".
@zarni000
@zarni000 4 года назад
Tsar title being equivalent to Cesar / Emperor should only be possible if it's granted by another emperor. You cannot become Tsar just because you choose that. Simeon was indeed Tsar as he was acknowledged by another emperor as such whome he defeated multiple times. Also arguably Tervel was Tsar as he was given the title Cesar in Constantinople after defeating the arabs in 8th century thus saving Constantinople,

Bulgaria attacked Serbia and Greece after they backstabbed Bulgaria and stole the promised to the Bulgarians Macedonian lands. If you break your contract with your ally and insult him in such a way you can only expect to pay in blood. Period. Bulgaria was not the aggressor, it was the other way around. But also Serbians and Greeks can’t deny the Bulgarian majority in Thrace and Macedonia. Serbians killed Bulgarian teachers, closed Bulgarian schools and began a Serbinisation of the population in Macedonia. The same can be stated also with Greece. +Gaben A We would love to do an episode about Hungary but we would need something like a whole research paper of a few pages to kickstart our episode as well as a guide to pronouncing stuff.

Ferdinand was exactly what other royals said about him. Unfit for the job.

Actually Indy, Stamboliyski and Daskova weren't socialists per se. They were center-left agrarians that felt that wanted the farmers to be the ones to benefit the most. While some of their economic views leaned to the left (and actually contributed to their downfall) they actually opposed communism. But their policies were failed and after three years of economic collapse and instability in Bulgaria, they were overthrown by the nationalist organization called the Internationl Macedonian Revolutionary Organization.
