In this episode, Shahriar reviews the Rigol DM3068 6.5 Digit Digital Multimeter. The Model DM3068 DMM gives reliable, cost effective, full DMM capabilities measuring DCV, ACV, DCI, ACI, Resistance (2 & 4 Wire), Capacitance, Diode Test, Frequency, and Temperature. These DMMs are designed for simple and efficient bench top use, but include software options for datalogging and remote programming from almost any interface.
Shahriar demonstrates various functionality including a computer guided destructive LED IV tracer to investigate LED failure patterns. The DM3068 can be purchased for $799 US dollars from Rigol Inc. The DM3058 offers similar functionality at 5.5 Digits for $695 US dollars.

That was a terrific review! I especially like the way you included so much about the science of electronics and how you were able to graph your results on a computer. It was a great learning experience for someone like me, a non-engineer, who loves electronics as a hobby.

The non-latching will be updated with firmware. The boot time is not much of an issue for a non-portable device. It all depends on what your needs are. Thanks for commenting!

Great review, I enjoyed viewing it! That scratchy continuity buzzer is OK in 20$ instrument, but this is 6.5 digit measuring beast, it should have IMO fast latched buzzer. Rigol is really steping up in big boys game arena. Bigest suprise was liquid nitrogen in your home lab, that is above and beyond:))) Looking forward to seeing review of that DS6000 scope.

Thank you for doing such a great review of this meter. I am considering buying one now that I understand all that it can do. One thing I would like to see is how ALL of the advanced functions of either a meter like this or a Rigol scope could or would be used in actual testing of gear. There always seem to be so many functions in test gear that don't get used. Perhaps seeing how, when and why they are used could be very helpful.

Shahriar, thank you for this video. May I ask you something about the Self-Test feature? Did you ever execute the Self-Test? I'm quite confused because if I do that, I get different "PASS" and(!) "FAIL" readings, depending on which Measurement Functions Keys I've pressed before Self-Test? And, if I get a "FAIL" and I restart the Device, I may get a "PASS"? For example, press Diode Test (DIODE) and execute a Self-Test, what do you get? A "PASS" or a "FAIL"? If "FAIL", which erros you get listed?

Hi! An oscilloscope can sample very fast and draw a graph. The bench multimeter can only make much slower measurements and most cannot (by themselves) graph the result, but they are much more accurate and precise. In this case, this meter is a 6.5 digit model, which should be accurate to 0.001% or so in DC Volts and precise to 1 part per million. A scope usually has only an 8 bit A to D converter (because it has to be a very fast one), with an accuracy of about 2%, precision of 1 part in 256.

The literature says that the K thermocouple can measure T down to -270 C. I think the firmware should take this into account.

Hello Shahriar, I am just about to make my final decision to buy a dm3068. I was hoping you could give me your opinion after having this for few years now. In particular, about the apparently small size of display characters, are yiu happy with the size of display? Also how is the update rate and drift of accuracy over the time? Thank you
@maynardr6
@maynardr6 12 лет назад
I think you only need the bench multimeter if you SERIOUSLY need accuracy. I am a beginner too. I have the DS1102e, the DG1022, and a fluke 87V. I have yet to need accuracy beyond that of my fluke, much less a $700 bench meter. That said, if I am reading the manuals correctly, this Rigol bench meter has an accuracy 3 orders of magnitude better than the scope! Rigol DS1102e voltage accuracy 2mV/div-5mV/div: ±4% Rigol DM3068 voltage accuracy 0.0035% Fluke 87V voltage accuracy ±(0.1% + 1)

Thanks for the great review-- if I ever need a bench DMM with this kind of accuracy, I will buy one of these. I am curious though-- did you ever open up the unit and look inside? I am interested in what voltage reference they use. (Agilent uses the LTZ1000A, some others use the LM399A, etc.) Can you take a look, or ask Rigol about this?
@GardeningZ
@GardeningZ 9 лет назад
This DM3068 seems very promising. I am curious about the residual error. Can you please check one thing for me? If you short the input with a very short cable, what will be the RMS AC voltage reading? The 34401A will reports about 3uV, and 34410A reports about 1uV.

I replied to your post before I watched the video - I see that this unit has a trend mode where it can graph the readings - still, this is much slower than a scope (which can capture millions or even billions of measurements per second for a short period of time)

I feel it should have some kind of grid/numbers on the histogram/trend functions

Is there a way to set it up to monitor for trigger conditions or externally be triggered by a device that does that aspect for your measurement? Just curious cuz now I'm curious if my NI DMM's have that built in or a way to sample from an external trigger source.

These large transformers are more than 99.5% efficient. But that is at 60 Hz (AC). When the near-DC of one of these events comes in they are 0% efficient and all of the DC current turns to heat. A 1000 megawatt transformer therefore only produces a few megawatts of heat under AC excitation. The DC saturates the iron cores and then the AC finishes the transformer off.

Even before seeing the review I can say it's a bit of a false comparison. The 34401A has been around since 1992 and has proven to be reliable, something that is critical in labs and other professional applications.
@Thesignalpath
@Thesignalpath 9 лет назад
I disagree. There is no way for me to review the reliability of a new instrument to the market. By your logic, no one should ever consider anything new then because the 34401A has been on the market since 1992. So far, I have not had any issue with the DM3068 and if it fails one day, I will update the review.
@BluefanNL
@BluefanNL 9 лет назад
TheSignalPathBlog I guess my post was a bit too one-sided, what I mean is that both are targeted at different markets. The 34401A has the agilent brand and reputation (for a reason) and that's partly what you pay for. Testing that reliability is difficult to say the least but it can be critical to some users. Others (also professionals) however can take the chance of a less well-known brand because the application is less critical. The Rigol may outperform the 34401A in features but the comparison between the two is a bit like comparing a sports car to a 4x4 (that's a bit exagerated but it's the idea), not fully comparable and with each their advantages.

Looks like a very capable instrument. However, I'm very leery of Chinese test equipment manufacturers. China essentially has no intellectual property (IP) rules like the U.S. As a result, Chinese manufacturers routinely steal IP and develop platforms without the heavy burden of R&D that say Keysight must contend with. I'm not saying this is what Rigol has done - I just wouldn't personally purchase Rigol because this practice is practically ubiquitous in China and I don't want to risk supporting that kind of business model.
