One would think with Crescent City's past experience with a tsunami that those who've come down to the docks would take the warnings more seriously, there's nothing you can do about the boats at this point nor should you except to evacuate to higher ground on the chance that the tsunami surge gets higher which can happen, true a tsunami loses some of its power when crossing an ocean but if the Japan quake had been a higher magnitude like 9.2 or more this situation could have gotten much more dangerous and the possibility of lives lost due to irresponsibility.
Nah, we had plenty of warning and time for it to dissipate. Now we have a major fault right off the coast. That has a major slip and CC will be wiped out. We've had truely monsterous tsunami in the area before and it'll happen again.
1234lavallee1 which ever company or companies that was responsible for building the harbor are complicit with the destruction that occurred ... since Japan has a long history with regards to earthquakes and tsunamis
I went to the beach and watched the tide go out further than I have ever seen. I got pics of the boats smashed up. This is a powerful video. It sure stirred up the feelings. Thank God there were no deaths here.
The tsunami spread around in waves. These were the ones that went towards the east of Japan. That's why it didn't take long for them to reach the US coastline.
Tally Ho is the only charter out of Crescent City...and he will also do funerals at sea (from his ad). Crescent city has been hit before by Tsunami, Alaska '64...and will be hit again.
Holy Cow. Crescent City Harbor got hit hard. Did it get a wave like Santa Cruz Harbor or just a constant surge in and out? How many surges did it get? How high was each surge?
@@kathyyoung1774 They had close to 18 hours of warning.....they had plenty of time .....but complacency and not wanting to "Waste Fuel" was a bigger concern for them...i guess they won't need fuel now .If these people act like this during this event,i'd hate to see what happens when the Northwest subduction zone gives way..That fault has produced 9.0 earthquakes just like what happened in japan.
@@mikepowell8611 I visited Crescent City many years ago and went to the library and they showed me a huge harbour jack that now rested right in front of the library. Must have been very deep water there where the library is.
The 1964 tsunami was far worse. It hit at night, and no one had any real knowledge of the phenomenon. The first wave tore things up, but everyone thought that there was only one wave. Many came down to the harbor as fast as they could after that first wave to inspect the damage. Unfortunately, the second wave was much larger. The third was less, but by then, many who had rushed to the harbor died. Others were swept away when the first and part of the second floor of the Surf Hotel was inundated. The wave destroyed everything in the business district near the ocean.
Jeff van wieren As I recall the stories, the bar where some people were swept away was the first floor of the Surf Hotel, but undoubtedly, there was more than one bar and certainly some of these were close to the shoreline. So, what you are saying could very easily be true. A friend of my father was at the Surf that evening. He survived while others did not.
Andre Tucker not sure what you saying, but my point is that between the 2011 and the 1964 tsunamis in Crescent City, the 64 tsunami was worse. Overall, the Japanese version of the 2011 tsunami made Crescent City's look like kids play.
@@theboipuds agreed, but the 64 tsunami reached to where Wells Fargo is now. i must admit that I am a bit disappointed that it took so long to repair everything. I do remember that the piers over by the Coast Guard station were still not repaired/replaced when I saw it six years after the tsunami.
This had to be the next morning (3-12-'11) actually around 8-9 AM. The waves took about 16 hrs to reach the west coast of the US all the way from from Japan.
Japan was 17 hours ahead of the U.S. West Coast on that date, so when the earthquake hit off the coast of Japan on the 11th at 2:46 p.m., it was 9:46 p.m. on March 10th in California. The tsunami waves reached Northern California on March 11th at 8:44 a.m., 11 hours after the earthquake.

At 1:23 the boat with the long ugly box built on the deck was for sale and the guy wanted $13,00 for it. I told him he would have too pay me $10,000 juts to take it off his hands. There was a lot of derelict dead boats in that harbor. Some of them sit on the ground, too expensive to repair, too costly to put in the dumps.
The new one that's gonna hit is supposed to wipe out Crescent City. But nobody knows when it'll hit. Supposed to be worse than the one in 1964, from what I've read.
Japan gets 100 times more Tsunami's than the US by far,so of course they are prepared...but even this time they were not prepared for the incredible size of it.
why are people laughting while see this destruction? now the reason i ask is A. anti-logical, B. disrespectful/abusive towards rights, and C. there watching the start of destruction...
Yes. The particular topography of Crescent City's harbor makes it a tsunami magnet. Zoning laws after the 1964 tsunami banned building homes right on the harbor.
I was leaving crescent city that morning and looked at the news when we got to a motel and it said a tsunami hit and showed video footage of flipped boats. Pretty fucking lit
@@stonew1927 That was not destruction....90% of the boats there were fine and only half the piers were messed up....wait till the northwest subduction zone goes...THEN you'll see what destruction is.
