Tsunami in Brookings

I recognized the flat roof boat, and the one with the blue & white stripes floating out in the ocean visible from my house. I wasn't aware they were unmanned until I saw this video on the 11PM news. My heartfelt thoughts & prayers go out to everyone who was affected by this.

This reminds me of some of the videos of the same tsunami coming ashore in Japan. At first, it looked just like this, with small vessels still tied up to docks...but in Japan, the water just kept coming, and the damage was infinitely worse.

Actually, by the time anyone came down to the docks to check on their boats in the morning the harbor was closed by the Coast Guard. The only ones who made it out to sea were a few commercial boats that left at night. We were hardly, "sitting on (our) asses..." as you suggest.

The commercial boats that did leave left to get deep water under them. After a short time the harbor was closed by the Coast Guard as the surge was due to hit Brookings. This is a safety measure, but the surge didn't come in for another four hours. During this time there was no passage allowed through the harbor. There had been several tsunami warning throughout the years in Brookings, but because the harbor faces the south, we never had any surge. This time it was different.

This is vety cool to watch, Ive owned a boat in brookings harbor for a couple of years now, after this, but to see what it was like, it's so cool, much love to the people who lost there boats, the brookings dock is a great community.

I have stood on that harbor bank and watched this type of thing A few times and it happens more then you would think...187.Tx

Those boats would have been better off at anchor. with the engine up and running..

I know hindsight is 20/20, but why wouldn't the boat owners take their boats out to sea until they knew for sure the event was over??

Painful to watch. Maybe it would be better to take one's yacht out to deep water before the Tsunami hits.
