Hey there! In this video, I'm reviewing the brand new (as of late 2020) TT Artisan 35mm f/1.4 manual-focus lens for APS-C mirrorless cameras. I'm using my Fuji X-E3 here but of course this lens is also sold for the Canon M, Sony E and Micro Four Thirds systems.

Technical details:
All pics are shot with the 24 megapixel Fuji X-E3 edited to taste in Lightroom and exported with standard sharpness settings. However I don't correct for distortion, CA or vignetting unwise it is explicitly stated within the videos. So you can see the original character and also optical errors of the lens in the sample shots.
Hint:
Don't confuse the brand TT Artisan - who make the lens I am reviewing here - with 7artisan who also make lenses and are also located in China.

I also published a written review with a lot of sample shots about this lens on my blog:

It hits the four c's for me: crazy small, crazy light, crazy sharp, and crazy cheap! This is my 'default' everyday carry on my EOS M50.

Hi Tom! I never comment but I wanted to say thank you for your review. I've been on the hunt for a new camera for a few weeks, since the original Canon G7 X has become a real pain for doing real photography. And yes, I've been using G7 X for portraits, I'm insane. Anyway, with my modest budget, I finally got a used X-E2s paired with 7artisans 35/1.4 and couldn't be happier. Not the same as TT but still quite similar. I'm blown away with the results, performance and the amount of control I'm not seizing. Your review was the last straw that broke the camel's back. I'm really glad I've nailed the perfect ratio of price/performance. Again, thank you, and keep doing great, detailed, and eye-pleasing videos that you do. Greetings from Moscow, Russia!
@tomscameras

Thanks for your feedback! Yes the X-E2 is still a great camera (as are many older Fuji bodies). I never tried the 7Artisans 35/1.4 myself but from what I have seen, it is also a good lens. That combo is all one needs for awesome photos. And yes manual focus gives you even more a feeling of controlling the result yourself!

I know especially from Leica M how the bigger lenses can intrude into the OVF view. But as far as I remember when I tried out an X-Pro the last time, it was the same there. So I guess the smaller and shorter the lens barrel, the better it is if you want to use the OVF.

Thank you very much for this review. Will be ordering this lens soon for X-E2 :-) I had 7Artisans 35mm f/1.2 and I did not like aperture ring without clicks (for photography). Also it was quite very soft at 1.2 so I usually used it anyways at 1.4+. Surprisingly TTartisan is also cheaper so that is all sure pickup for me :-)
@tomscameras
@tomscameras 3 года назад
I didn't try the 7artisans 35/1.2 for myself. Should be also an interesting lens if you're ready for some more "dreamy" look at open aperture. 7artisans now also released a brand-new 35/0.95 which should be much better than their old small f/1.2, but is also way more heavy and more expensive.

Thanks for a nice review of this new lens that I hadn't heard of till now. I am a fan of classic manual lenses so this will work well in my collection especially at its reasonable price. I wear glasses and find the EVF of the X-E3 awkward to use for manual focus. This lens would sit better on my X-T30.
@tomscameras
@tomscameras 3 года назад
Thanks for your comment! Yes I also love manual lenses a lot. I use the Pen Zuiko 38/1.8 often as well but this new lens is better IMO (except distortion). But maybe also my copy of the Zuiko isn't the greatest, after 50 years ... The EVF of the X-E3 is small and bad for glasses, yes. Good Fuji gives us a choice of many different body styles ... :)

Great review and video. I was wondering if you had tried to use the zone focussing scale on that lens and if it was precise enough for street use. Thanks
@tomscameras
@tomscameras Год назад
I rarely use zone focusing. But yes, the scale is reasonably accurate on this lens. That's the advantage if you have the infinity mark set up correctly. I'd always recommend to zone focus at apertures around f/8 though, but that's my general recommendation, not just for this specific lens!
@AnilDhumne
@AnilDhumne Год назад
I always enjoy your lens reviews. I have been a typical dad taking family pictures using autofocus for several years. Now I am dedicating some time to learn real photography. Still new. My question is I just bought a Sigma 18-35 F1.8 DC lens. Would this 35 mm be a good addition giving me extra or different abilities?
@tomscameras
@tomscameras Год назад
The Sigma is a pretty substantial and also a very good lens. And f/1.8 is not the hugest of differences to f/1.4. So the TT Artisan won't offer you a lot of new abilities. But it will be MUCH smaller and more light weight. So maybe you'll take your camera with you more often! Note the TT Artisan is manual focus. Some photographers love it, others don't. It's definitely slower but also you'll pay more attention to where you place your focus point. So it can be a rewarding process. If you're asking me about a lens that really compliments your Sigma, maybe have a look at the TT Artisan 35/0.95 or the 7Artisans 35/0.95 lenses. They're again about an f/stop faster, and that can sometimes make a real difference compared to f/1.8. I have reviews of both these lenses on my channel.

• Anyone whos purchasing or purchased ttartisans 35mm f1.4- it has a 39mm filter thread & if wanting to use filters on front of Lens & you already have filters but larger sized ones, just buy some 'filter step-up rings'..for example: 39-52mm, this may save you money, rather than buying same filter/filters in a 39mm size too. Enjoy! 👍
@tomscameras
@tomscameras Год назад
Yes, thanks for your hint! It would have been great if TT Artisan would use the same filter threads at least where it is easily possible: For example, the 17/1.4 has 40.5mm and this 35/1.4 has 39mm ... but WHY? They easily could have used 40.5mm for both these lenses ...
@Stop-All-War
@Stop-All-War Год назад
@tomscameras what ifs don't solve problems.. solutions do. Stepping rings!! I agree, a universal system is a nice dream but the engineering of things require different measurements 😎
@tomscameras
@tomscameras Год назад
@@Stop-All-War You're right: What if's don't solve problems, but still sometimes someone reads it to improve things for the future ... I mean, the newer TT Artisan 25/2, 50/2 and 23/1.4 all share the same 43mm filter threads finally! Whereas the 17/1.4 and 35/1.4 with their odd filter threads are older designs ... I think that could be related to photographers complaining in the past that all these lenses have different filter threads! Having said that, your tipp about the step-up rings is very good, of course! Especially if you intend to use somewhat more expensive filters like high-quality ND filters or polarizers ...
@Stop-All-War

Hi! The behavior of your lenses is absolutely normal. These are fully manual lenses. They have no electrical contacts and so they cannot communicate with the camera. You have to set the camera to A (aperture priority) or M (manual exposure) and you set the aperture on the ring on the lens! That’s how all manual lenses are designed. Also adapted old lenses will work like this.

@@louismaxell I didn’t do a direct comparison, no. I already prefer the TT Artisan because of the clicked aperture and the somewhat self-adjustable hard stop at infinity, which is a very convenient feature in real life. And the TT Artisan‘s optics are very good. It’s a bit different to the f/0.95 lenses where the 7Artisans is better than the TT Artisan, which has some optical flaws. That’s actually a good question! Here’s the answer: All these measures are from the sensor plane within the camera! Many cameras have a symbol printed on them so you know exactly! That really depends on what you are looking for. These three lenses differ considerably in speed, size, price and AF/MF. If you want / need AF … then the choice is clear. The 0.95 filter size was just to big. I like my setup small.. if you feel the quality of this lens is much better than the 7artisans 35mm f1.2 Mark II.. I'll probably change. I just read that Jonas rask review of 1.2 .. and even if it was the worse lens his mounted... it seems like he loved the imperfection of that lens. The look and so on.. I haven't gotten it yet. I have not tried out the 35/1.2 in detail but from what I have seen, the TT Artisan 35/1.4 has better optics, yes. What I like about the TT Artisan is that it's nicer to handle (if you are a photographer) because it has the clicked aperture and infinity hard stop. I don't think the f/1.2 is so much faster that it makes a big difference ... if you want "super-fast" then you would go all the way to the 7Artisans 35/0.95 instead. But you already own the 35/1.2 ... ? So if you enjoy it, I would maybe just keep it. It should be a nice contrast to your "perfect" Fujinons! The Fujinon pancake 27/2.8 is a very good lens optically. Yes it should be every bit as good as the Fujinon 23/2 or 50/2.

Thank you! Well I really can recommend the TT Artisan 35/1.4. The only one (in my opinion) that is really worth to consider here is the new 7Artisans 35/1.4. Most of the other lenses are older designs. And these new Chinese manufactureres learned a lot just in the last few years so the new designs are just much more refined. I did NOT shoot the 7Artisans 35/1.4 so far. Only the "big brother" 35/0.95 which is a different category of lens (superfast, more heavy, more expensive). However I do love that all the TT Artisan lenses have click stops in the aperture. Very good for photography. 7Artisans does NOT have click stops. So basically, if you want to shoot more video than photos, go for the 7Artisans 35/1.4 (no click stops) if you are a photographer and don't care for video, the TT Artisan 35/1.4 would get my vote.

Overall, if I only leave the house with the camera and one single lens, then I prefer the 35, because I like this focal length a lot. The 50/1.2 is best for portraits where I also like it a lot. And the 17 offers wide field-of-view, so if I'm in a tight place like an old city center, I might prefer that one. 35mm on APS-C is too tight (you don't get enough on your frame) in some circumstances. So I can't say just one lens is the best for me :) but again, if I go out of the house and take only one lens out of the three with me, then it almost always would be the 35.

I have an old Sony NEX-5 that comes with a good 18-50mm kit lens. When I tried TTartisans 25mm f2 and 35mm 1.4, that's the time that I fully realized what a sharp image is, which is not being delivered by the Sony kit lens that I am used to. I also used the Canon SX series (big zoom bridge cameras, with non-interchangeable lens) which I thought were of very good quality and character already, but I still enhance the look that it matches my taste. Upon using the TTartisans 25mm f2, I realized that its normal vignette is exactly what I am trying to create when enhancing, also the contrast, together with the sharpness that I never captured before (even when using the DSLR with kit lens and/or prime lens of my friends). TTartisan lenses cost less, and perform better than any other lens I tried, for me to achieve the image that I want. I even like the lens flares of it when stopped down. In one image I captured in a retreat, I used the glare to create an effect of halo above the retreatants.

Love all I see about this lens but the strange thing for me, every review I see, states this lens CAN NOT focus to infinity at wide open!!!!! 5:30 WHY? when design wise, it should be really easy to let a tiny more turn and thus Infinity. In fact, most Samyang/Rokinon (My GoldStandard of Manual lens design) do pass the infinity, that is one fantastic option they provide, to cover minor adapter imperfections, once those lenses are adapted to something else, that I really appreciate. Now Chines being number one copying, why didn't they do that? Or is it some sort of ego thingy: Copy western, Good. Copy So.Korean, Yakkkkk!😱🤔🤣😵😎

The idea of TT Artisan is that the hard stop is right at infinity. If done well, it is a HUGE advantage over having the lens focus "past" infinity such as a Samyang etc. It makes photographing landscapes, night shots, etc. super quick - just move the focus ring to the hard stop and you know it's right at infinity. I am still unsure if the TT Artisan 35/1.4 can be user adjusted. Some people say that it is possible! I did not try yet because actually I'm fine with the way how my lens is factory adjusted, even though it is not 100% perfect it works well for all practical purposes for me. I do really like this feature and prefer it a lot over lenses that deliberatly go past infinity. But you are totally right, it would be great if they could make that more precise, or they should communicate how users can adjust it (like they do with user-adjustable rangefinder coupling on M mount lenses).
