TT Circuit Assen Old Layout 1984 - 2005
In this Circuits of the video we show you the 1984 - 2005 layout of TT Circuit Assen in the Netherlands.
We start at Start/Finish, which is here already since 1926!
Short after the start was the famous S-Corner, a fast right-left combination. However it was easy full throttle it was most spectaculair to see the motorcycles move from the right to the left at high speed.
With the 2006 renovation the old S-Corner was demolished. The site of the corner is now the end of the Start/Finish Straight.
Short after the S-Corner was the Haarbocht Corner, where they enter the Northern Loop. The first part of this section has been dissapeared. There is a parking lot now and a pond. Actually the Northern Loop was much longer. But for safety reasons they shortened it in 1984.
Just like the version from 1955 - 1983 this layout made usage of a public road, which formed the central axis of the track. On both sides was a permanent loop, the Northern Loop and the Southern Loop.
When there were no races, the full circuit was open for public. Hower both permanent loops lead nowhere, except to the farmers land on the inside of the track, they also were open for traffic untill 1992.
The permanent loops were often used for illegal racing, among others by Herman Liesemeijer, the founder of the Circuits of the past website and RU-vid Channel.
But after some grave accidents happened the city council of Assen decided to close the circuit for traffic in 1992. Since then TT Circuit Assen is a full permanent race track.
The old Northern Loop ended at the Strubben Hairpin. Today there is a new Strubben Hairpin which is almost, but not exactely, on the same site as the old one. The original hairpin was actually where the gravel trap from the new one is now.
After the Strubben Hairpin came the fast Veenslang section. In 2002 they moved this section to the outside to create more space on the infield.
After the Veenslang comes the Ruskenhoek. Original the Ruskenhoek was an easy full throttle kink. But in 2002 it was replaced by a right left combination which was not easy flat out. The drivers criticized the corner, so a few years later it was replaced by a much slower version.
Today there are two versions of the Ruskenhoek, a fast version and a chicane.
After the Ruskenhoeks comes the Stekkenwal. Originally this was a slow rectangular corner. But after the 1990 renovations they made this corner much faster. Actually, this version of the Stekkenwal Corner is a copy of the 1984 - 2005 version of the Haarbocht Corner.
At Mandeveen and Duikersloot they moved both corners to the inside, to create a bigger run off on the outside in 2002. This double right-hander leads to the most demanding part of TT Circuit Assen which is untouched by modernization. At least with regard to the layout. The grass strips have been replaced by modern asphalt strips.
This fast section contains short straights and fast kinks and ends with the most feared corner of TT Circuit Assen… The Ramshoek, a very fast right-hander that seperates the men and the boys.
It was also here where Herman had a very scary moment in 1990 during illegal racing. You can read that story in his ebook “The Magic of Weathered Asphalt”. There you can not only read about illegal racing at Assen but also at the abbandoned Formula 1 circuit of Nivelles in Belgium.

The last corner of TT Circuit Assen is the Geert Timmer Chicane. Just like Start/Finish this was also part of the 1926 - 1954 street circuit. But then it was not a chicane but a fast kink. For safety they modified it to a chicane in 1976.

It's I quite famous circuit, one of the more popular venues on the MotoGP calendar. Nicknamed the Cathedral of Motorsport.

I was absolutely gutted when the modified Assen in 2006 :( They got rid of all the really good bits of the track. It's still good and produces some great races but it''ll never be as good as this layout imo

Looks like it would make a good track for F1, maybe just a little narrow and little short in length. But would be very interesting to see the F1 cars go around!

They competed with Zandvoort for the Dutch F1 Grand Prix, but F1 choosed Zandvoort. Originally Zandvoort was the track for car racing while Assen was the track for motorcycle racing. What Assen has against to organize an F1 race is that it is designed for motorcycle races. There are short straights and no hard braking points. If F1 would have choosen Assen they would change the Veenslang section to create an overtaking opportunity for F1.

The only thing that is nostalgic about the current track are the toilet groups on the paddock that remind me of the 80s/90s. But that is me.. it all looks too fancy nowadays.

Well, legal racing is better. But there should be more opportunities to drive legally on a circuit. In those days you could only to Zandvoort twice a year for a track day. And in the summer you could drive there at eavening, but that was it. Today there are more track days, also on Assen. But it's by far not like in England, where you can drive almost every day on a circuit.
