TTArtisan Leica M - Nikon Z 6bit adaptor review 

Thanks. oh just curious how does this adaptor helped you focus with the Zf? (as I'm working on a Zf review myself, so want to know more about user's experience)

@@TheRealRichardWong I just used it like you showed in the video. I had read reviews that it wouldn’t work with the ZF but it worked right out of the box. I’m using a non coded Voigtlander and plan to get a 35mm Summicron in the future. I almost shipped the ZF camera back because I couldn’t nail the focus without zooming in. With the SL2/S1/Q3 the EVF is so good you don’t need to zoom in and that’s what I really wanted. But this adapter works so well!

@@vc6218 It won’t work at all on my ZF. The camera can’t even see the adapter is there.

oh that is the standard lens hood for the TTArtisan 35mm APO lens.

I haven't done any side by side testing comparing a Leica camera with Z. But I did some comparison of the SL2 with the Lumix S1R, and the Leica sensor which was optimised for M lenses does output slightly better image quality: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-TXGEf7ZMDfE.html

You are correct, it doesn't have helicoid for closer focus distance

@@TheRealRichardWong a pity....just cannot have it all. I routinely use the magically excellent Zeiss 35mm f/1.4 zm as "standard" lens on a Z7, with Voigtlander's m-to-z adapter, and the helicoïd really helps dramatically increase the usefulness of that compact setup (food pics, flowers, close-ups of small objects, unusual portraits, etc). But I do miss the exif data when sorting out images later, and that trap focus capability would be an asset when subjects move around.... Guess there is not enough space in such an adapter to accomodate both an helicoid and the electronics (m-code sensor, cables, nikon chip)....

yes i guess it's probably technically very difficult to add helicoid/movable joint as there are already 6 bit sensor, some microchip/electronic components..etc inside the adaptor already.. Well maybe give the engineers a few years time, they could make it possible?

What about adding an EF to M mount to this adapter, will that work?

in theory you can do that but i haven't tried that myself

hi Alexander, i don't have the setup to test for you, but for highlight-weighted metering, i believe it would just work fine? And re trap focus/dot focus it works fine with non 6bit code

It's exciting to think that I could use trap and dot focusing with my legacy Nikkor and OM Zuiko glass. I asked about highlight-weighted metering because Nikon Z cameras don't normally engage this metering mode with adapted non-CPU lenses. I would be thrilled if the TTArtisan adapter would allow me to utilize highlight-weighted metering with legacy manual focus lenses. (It still baffles me that Nikon Z cameras don't allow users to utilize zebra patterns for stills shooting.)

You could attach a geared rubber ring to a normal lens if you want to use a normal lens with follow focus

Dji has a lidar lens focuser, you can adapt most non cine lens as well, you basically add a strap with gears to the lens. ." DJI Ronin 3D Focus System" LiDAR [Time of Flight] T.O.F. sensor.

Hey Barry, Happy Diwali! Do you mean go to the non-CPU lens setting and enter the focal length? That wouldn't work because the adaptor pretends it is a lens with cpu chip so the camera doesn't use those data. yes the Z still supports trap focus! But only works if you use a lens/adaptor with CPU chip

I haven't got a chance to test it with a Zf yet. But @vc6218 just posted on this video that he tried and it works for him right out of the box.

@@TheRealRichardWong Hi Richard, Thanks for the reply. That motivated me to deep further dive. I was able to update the firmware of the adapter with the latest available (v1.0.1). By doing so, I noticed that the adapter I had received had probably not a functional firmware (the info was not readable). Long story short: it works! Trap focusing works like you describe in your video but with the new Zf! On top of that one can use the AI and automatic face and eyes detection. It works great! Both in trap focusing mode (either AF-s or AF-c) but also with simple focus confirmation in manual mode (the square around the eye or face turns green). I have tested with the 50mm voigtlander APO. Works great!. I have also tested with stacked adapter and the 24mm Nikon Ais. Works also great! Same with the 105mm ai. Only gotcha with the latter, there is a pronounced vignette. All in all, I think it makes the Nikon z platform and in particular the Zf -with its eye and face detection - a fantastic platform to adapt Leica m mount lenses or any legacy manual lense. Probably even more attractive than the Leica Sl platform. Happy to share more insights if you wish! Nicolas

I only have 50 and 35mm lens with me right now, both seems to work. But i don't have anything longer and wider right now. sorry

@@TheRealRichardWong What happens if you change focal length to 28mm or 135mm while using your 50mm? Do you see any difference in IBIS behavior then? You should, if IBIS adjusts itself for the set focal length. If you get to check it, I would really appreciate your results, thanks.

Did you check IBIS functionality as I suggested above?

I did a test as requested but didn't have any conclusive results

@@TheRealRichardWong Thanks for your reply. If IBIS communication doesn't work properly, you can confirm it like this: Put on the 50mm lens. IBIS will work perfectly, _even_ when the focal length is set to 135mm. This should be quite obvious if you check the viewfinder at 100%. If you (at 100% magnification) see that image stabilization gets quite busy / shaky, when focal length is set to 135mm (using your 50mm lens), then you can tell that IBIS communication works properly.

Diagframa 5.6 up can not read in camera?

Is this still the case? I just ordered one for mine.

@@soulopticc I tried two adapters, and neither would work without a firmware update. The update was not easy for me, as I am a Mac user :( I had to struggle with a Japanese language PC at work ....

Do you mean the actual exposure (i.e. brightness?)? just the normal way, the camera metering still works.
