The union representing 12 thousand TTC workers, responsible for operation and maintenance, voted 98% in favour of a strike mandate. Job security and wages are the top issues at the negotiating table. Mark McAllister reports.
Mrs Chow you raised the tax! Give it to TTC! At meantime, Cut your staff, including bonuses and freeze your raise. Stop wasting money on the non needed projects!
I read somewhere a while back that in Japan, when transit workers go on strike, they continue to operate the system without being paid and let passengers use it for free until a deal is reached and agreed upon.
Rick Leary should never have been hired by the TTC. Good on the workers for flexing their power, I hope to god that management gives them what they deserve because I have no other option if the TTC shuts down.
@@anthony560 But Rick Leary pay way better and don’t care what happens to the TTC! He can’t even do anything to those people who constantly going for FREE RIDES which so much unfair to people like me who lives scraping and loading monthly pass!
@@pretty_troll Generalizing them is not Fair even as I observe that maybe half of the employees aren’t doing their job as you see so many Supervisors doing NOTHING but just chatting around and don’t even dare to help, they are like CHISEL.
Notice how they haven't said anything about the revenue drop even when ridership has 'increased'. On the StreetCars and Buses where Proof of Purchase is in place I can GUARANTEE that on average 4 out of 10 riders DON"T PAY!!!!!!
ADD to the equation Bus Drivers allowing a free ride when people do not have "balance" on their card. It happened to me but I refused it and walked back to the station to recharge my presto card.
@@ajc5298 sitting there arguing with one person holding all the other paying customers hostage isn't a solution, so they allow the person on and keep everyone moving. Makes sense.
Why weren't they bargaining long before the expiry of the contract? Wages must keep pace with inflation. I don't want to ride in a TTC vehicle where the operator has money concerns on their mind rather than the job at hand. It's dangerous. As for contracting out, perhaps the management of the TTC should be contracted out.
Most people don’t get an automatic pay increase with inflation, what makes TTC or any other group special. Also contracting out makes perfect sense when current TTC workers already make so much. It is escalating wage demands that drive contracting work. All things being equal most companies would rather keep operations in house if they can afford to do so
@@Kyt2024 No group of hourly workers or salaried professional career management personnel should ever be considered "special". In order to recruit and retain a competent workforce, any business must offer a competitive wage or lose out to those that do. You can easily see what the effect of this "race to the bottom" of wages has done to the trucking industry with more and more incompetent driver's on our highways. When one considers the cost of housing in Toronto, how can the TTC retain good drivers if they can't afford to live in the city they serve? With regard to inflation, is there a logical reason explaining why an hourly worker should suffer any more than salaried management? Are the workers wages increasing at the same rate as them over time? It's all about what is equitable for all employees regardless of their position. I don't mind at all if the TTC has to raise it's fares to reflect the true cost of providing the services it does. Finally, I'm not a pro union leftist but a retired successful businessman that faced reality head on and dealt with it rather than pretend that somehow at sometime someone will fix things.
@@gamileking1 doesn't that already happen? They keep diverting service, shut down sections of the subways on weekends and of course service gets suspended when one of the homeless starts trouble on the system, so it'll be like any other day on the TTC, except longer....
It was Mike Harris that pulled Ontario’s contribution to the TTC’s operating subsidy back in the late 1990s. None of the provincial government since then has put it back and Doug Ford didn’t remove what was already gone.

About time. I was wondering when the TTC employees would be ready to strike. After all they had that chance delayed back in 2020. Would of been madness had they went on strike then, but look at Toronto now…
This is exactly the reason why Rob Ford declared the TTC essential when he was Mayor. He was sick of these people holding the city hostage every time they would go on strike
well from my interaction with the ttc i would have to say there a few good people, and there the nasty majority. there is little enforcement of the rules for say bus drivers, it use to be they were held to schedule, now not so much. on a line i take all the time some of the drivers push hard to get to the end so they can take an unscheduled break. it makes the ride uncomfortable and so what dangerous. oh yah they need to learn some manners.
Lakeshore west streetcar line was running buses for over 5 years. How many billions of tax payer was wasted redoing the streetcar tracks and power lines over and over again. Queen streetcar line is a freaking mess. How much is a fare collector making theses days??????
The he'll they do . Postal workers I see in Toronto look like they were on welfare of AAA and somebody just gave them they job to get them off welfare . And this is in Toronto.
I say, dew it. Let there be a little chaos once in a while. Plus it happened to me back in Ottawa. Oof, if it wasnt for Obama, it still would have been on strike lol.
Unions in Germany do well. They are the 4th largest economy and their citizens have a great quality of life. USA has a low union participation rate. Unless one is rich there, their quality of life is ... 'iffy'
This is a job for humans. This is a difficult job. No one works for 8-10 with no lunch break or washroom break in any other job. Drivers are the first to meet violence on the bus and deal with it until help arrives. Driver assaults are up as is crime everywhere. These people can’t defend themselves. These people are responsible for the safety of everyone and everything inside and outside of the bus. With all the distractions and challenges on the job I wonder who else works at that speed with that much responsibility
