Great video for triggering between analog & digital oscilloscopes.

My idea of a legacy oscilloscope is my trusty Tek 475. An IBM “surplus” item, new about 1973 and still in spec. I also have a Rigol MSO5354 amongst others. Finally disposed of all my vacuum tube era test equipment. Parts too hard to find!

A very good summary of the technological development of oscilloscopes.

My digital scope was not displaying most of the pulses that analog scopes showed UNTIL, I went to the squire menu and selected, peak detect. Also for spurious events an analog storage tube can be fun. Some analog scopes had many digital features added to them. The best were very fast, 400 MHz, and very pricey. While the lovely analog scopes are available used at around five percent of their cost new, I resist buying them because, internal components have exceeded their shelf life.

Hello, did you ever try a LeCroy? I have to admit that I really, really like my 9354AM...the measuring capabilities are insane.

I have not used a recently made LeCroy scope. I did have access to one of older design more than 10 years ago but I never had occasion to use it.

Good video..I have a Tek 2431L...which I guess was right in the change over to digital..or to some people call it a hybrid...I have only had this scope a month...still learning...but it "claims" to be a digital scope..with 300mhz bandwidth...It was made around 1990-91.

It is indeed a digital scope. This was at the time when the guts were digital, but they were still using a CRT as a display. New scopes all use LCD screens, since it is probably much less expensive, and you can have color, as well as being able to make them very shallow compared to the CRT versions.

I have a Goldstar 9020 dual trace 20MHz scope I bought in the early 90's. A very well made scope for an entry level product. I still have it and use it, although I use my Tek 2215A more often now.

I used my Goldstar/LG 9060 until about 2003 when I got several new and used scopes. I am afraid the controls have become so dirty since then that it needs a good cleaning to be used regularly. After I got a Tektronix TDS 2024B it became my favorite scope until I got a Rigol DS4000 last year. All of them were better than their user and still are!

Hi. Nice video. I wonder if you can make a review or say some words on the 54600 with installed 54657 FFT module to show its FFT capabilities?

Unfortunately my 54600 does not have the FFT module and I have never used it elsewhere. I had access to an enormous quantity of HP gear in the late 80's and 90's (donated to the lab I directed by HP) but I never used the FFT capabilities. This may be a little off point, but bandersentv has many videos on the use of the 54600 on RU-vid that you might enjoy.

Ironically, the scope I have now is a Tektronix 453. Only rated for 50MHz and apparently a model from 1967.

It has been almost 30 years since I had a 453 but I thought mine was 100 MHz. I got it around 1976 (used) and kept it until about 1985 when it got flaky and I traded it to another engineer for a short wave radio. Wish I hadn't now. Thanks for the comment.

I've read online that the 453 was made in 1757 and was 50MHz and the 454 was put out in 1971 and may have been 150MHz or so. I like the features and the more portable size, and the backlight for the graticule.

is the hp still a good buy used?
@ronshaw80

Yes, it is still a very usable scope. If it is a good price, and works well, there is no reason to avoid them.
