Short answer: Ego, Protection, Morale/ Copium and the least of the cases having fun. Being toxic gives excuses protecting morale and your ego whilst also protecting yourself from other's opinions and being toxic can in some cases be fun. Long answer: Egos are fragil things to protect them we usually make excuses being humble makes you recognize you could be better in a constructive way whilst Ego feeds you like gasoline to your engine firing up instead of simply lowering your intensity. Morale / what we now call Copium for some reason being toxic allows you to creates excuses yet again and stop yourself from a spiral of negative emotions towards yourself. Finally Fun it can be fun to be toxic if you know with who, when and where to do so. It's the rarest one since it's usually playing around with friends or used as Sarcasm. Being humble helps you be a better person but like in a job, school and many things in life you will be taken advantage of and so nobody wants to appear weak or an easy target so a facade of toxicity usually makes it clear that you are here to win although it can be ironic since it can often cause disconnects and a lot of toxicity. It's only when all are balanced that you truly shed that layer of toxicity that's why if you're humble you'll want to be surrounded by humble ppl and if you're toxic you are more then likely gonna feel more confortable with semi toxic ppl.
