As a Panthers fan, this unfortunately sounds like a Luke Kuechly situation. Dude kept getting concussions that held him out of games for weeks at a time and ultimately retired for his own safety. Super sad. Hope Tua is okay

I'm very curious as to how he ended up in protocols. Everyone was saying that the picks he threw were very "unlike Tua" so clearly he wasn't himself during the second half. @@ericsinclair1826 This isnt totally uncommon, its happened in the NBA more than a few times over the years where a player hits their head very innocuously. @ineedhoez
@ineedhoez Год назад
Exactly! Why? Because the nfl is INTENTIONALLY misleading people by centering the concussion protocol around symptoms. Your brain isn't healed, just because you don't have symptoms!!! They brain takes months to heal after head trauma, that is so severe, that is causes symptoms. The nfl tells players that they are cleared to go when the symptoms disappear. Neurologists can measure brain activity baseline levels and determine if your brain is functioning properly and restored to its baseline. After an injury brain activity decreases. You may or may not have symptoms. If you sustain an additional brain injury while your brain activity is diminished, it exacerbates the original injury exponentially. It brings the brain activity levels down further. When they get too low, you go into permanent brain damage territory. Your brain must fully heal and go back to baseline. Taking 2 weeks off after a concussion is insufficient. You're looking about more like 2 months. The NFL pretends like it is doing something, for liability purposes. Unfortunately, the entire concussion protocol is based on the presentation of symptoms, which is the improper thing to measure.

I think that the spotters need to do a better job. Then, the doctors can at least check with the players to see how they feel - since most players are probably not going to initiate that process. For example, this show makes a HUGE deal about quarterbacks being tough - and how teams rally around that. And that’s fine. But it also puts a lot of pressure on quarterbacks not to self-report, so that they don’t look weak. There’s also a lot of money on the line - and, if you don’t have a background in cognitive science or medicine, it can be difficult to understand the long-term dangers of concussions.

Great... now expect the NFL to put in a rule that "roughing the passer" will now include tackling the QB by the legs such that they fall and potentially hit their head.

Remember a few years ago we lost Troy Aikman, Steve Young and I think one other QB to retirement due to concussions. Most were not helmet to helmet hits, but the whiplash of helmet hitting the ground in a standard tackle/sack. What do they have to do? Neck rolls for QBs, new high tech materials IN the helmets? Different shape at the back of the helmet? Or, radical approach - lighter weight helmets to make players get their techniques better? Helmet weight can't be helping the whip into the ground. One other thing to consider - QB body type. Do they need to start looking like Linebackers and safeties? Big neck, back, chest all while not losing any flexibility in the throwing motion.

While the Buffalo Bills‘ 32-29 victory over their AFC East rival, the Miami Dolphins, on Saturday Night Football was an absolutely thrilling event, the team lost their most important offensive lineman, Mitch Morse, early in the third quarter. The team captain exited the field at the start of the second half to be evaluated for a head injury and was ruled out for the remainder of the game due to a concussion. This injury was incredibly concerning since Morse has suffered five concussions during his NFL career, his latest back in 2020, per Pro Football Talk.

Steelers quarterback Kenny Pickett is set to play against the Panthers on Saturday after missing last Sunday’s game with a concussion and he will be sporting a new look in his return to action. The concussion was the second of the season for Pickett and he said on Thursday that doctors recommended he wear a different helmet with additional padding in the back in hopes of better protecting him if he hits his head on the turf as he did in Week 14. Pickett was initially cleared to keep playing after that hit, but left after three plays because he reported issues with his vision and “not feeling good” when he came off the field.

Watch. The NFL will start to implement a rule for any play a QB goes to the ground, he will have to go and get checked, sit out one or more plays. Then they'll start calling roughing the passer on it. It'll get to a point where sacks will not be allowed.

Not blaming Tua…but looking at these hits Tua has taken and the way his head bounces off the ground, he needs to learn how to fall. He makes no effort to mitigate head trauma. As an good example, Lamar Jackson in my opinion does it the best when he gets hit. He ticks, rolls, twist his body, whatever he has to do to mitigate real damage when he’s hit.

Unless he reported during the game which he most likely didn’t then I can’t see this being on the dolphins as a org.. the nfl has their own guy to pull players out to get checked for concussion and I’m sure I didn’t see them do it so nfl is partially at fault if dolphins are too

It’s would be very hard to get a guy like Tua to retire from football. Not even just bc of him being tuff or competitive. It’s bc he’s on the verge and in a position to acquire generational wealth by being a starting QB in the nfl. I’m sure he’s a millionaire now but that won’t last the rest of his life and take care of his family. Hell never say oh I’m to hurt I can’t play anymore bc of that fact. I probably wouldn’t either even knowing it bright be a disaster in the future but I’d want to do whatever I can to make sure my family is taken care of forever if possible and that could happen for him with a big contract…

I thought it was interesting that Rodgers mentioned Steve Young. I don’t know it to be true but I’ve heard something very different about Young. He may be on tv and seemingly sharp but I heard many have witnessed serious issues with him on set. I don’t know what the truth really is but it seems clear football is not a net positive for any player’s brain. I think he’s right though that it varies from player to player.
