1. do you have to use water conditioner? Like to remove chlorine before placing your fish? 2. Not sure where you live, I'm in California, winter could be cold. What do you do then? Do you live them outside?
1. I don't use water conditioner. I have a rare situation-- my municipality doesn't use chlorine because our artesian wells filter the water through natural volcanic rock. 2. I live in a place where Winters are mild and tolerable for the fish- not ideal, but they don't die. They perk up nicely when the weather warms up again in spring. When the temperatures drop to mid 60's °F on some isolated days in the Winter, while it would be better if I brought them indoors, or if I had a heater-- but I opt for simplicity, and leave them outdoors as they are. Yes, CA Winters are too sustained to do what I do. You need a heater or need to bring them indoors.
How do you clean your tubs? I mean using a siphon dont you clean the bottom? I ask this because today i started setting up a tub. But i forgot to put the tub over something in order to being able to siphon the bottom of the tub 😖
@@kaimukibackyard148 thanks.. Yes I saw it after i wrote you... I see that your tubs are at ground level... I was thinking about getting a siphon and all of that... But i guess i just get a hose just like you. Hope i can siphon the bottom just the way you do it. Thanks again 🙂
Wow! i love this.. it looks more beautiful than any artificial aquarium.. i want to make same things at my home but i am confused with two things first, is that necessary to keep separate pregnant fishes? if yes then how to know that which one is got pregnant? second, can i use concrete tub? please guide... Thank you.
Guppies eat their fry, so if you want to save them, there are many ways. I offer just one idea on the very first video on this channel. As for how you know if they're pregnant?-- See a video called: "Is My Female Guppy Pregnant?" on this channel. Can you use a concrete tub? Yes, and many people do. You'll probably have other questions as well, so in the 2 years I've operated this channel, I put hordes of tips on breeding and raising guppies, growing and propagating water lilies, and cleaning and other stuff on tub water gardening. Based on the questions you're asking, believe you would discover great benefits from perusing the earlier videos on my channel and work your way to present day. If it helps you please let me know. If it does not help you, and it's a waste of your time, please let me know this as well, and let me know why. Anyway, thanks for landing on my video, and welcome to my channel!
Kaimuki Backyard Thank you so much..... i 'll tell you and show you my activities after finishing it, it will take time because i am making my own concrete tub as my need and space required at my home.. i will share to you if there is a way to reach to you easily.. :) you are so creative and i am glad hearing from you. Thank you!
I posted a video from a year ago on winters. Please refer to that one for Winters. Summers are high 80's to low 90's F. Fall and Spring are 70's and 80's F.
When they are in the sun, it's direct sunlight. However, adjacent structures (house, trees) limit the direct sun to about four hours per day. I've not had the heat kill the guppies. This video is years old. Nowadays, I have my tubs filled much shallower (anywhere from 2 to 8 inches of water depth). At this shallowness, the water could overheat, therefore I have my tubs in partial shade. They're under the canopies of trees. My later videos on my channel depict this situation. I don't get that pea soup green water. Easier to control algae.
Thank you so much for making all these wonderful videos. I really like the look of tubs with water lilies in them. Thanks for showing your friends tubs too -- so pretty. I have some platy fish fry outside in tubs right now. I want to get some more water lilies for my tubs. Do you have a video about the kinds of lilies you use or what kinds are best for small tubs? Thanks!
+Joni Solis Thanks for feedback because it helps me set the direction of my channel. You mention platies-- coincidentally, I have a platy video in the works, from footage taken at his house. I don't have a video with different kinds of water lilies, because I only have two strains. Depending on where you live, that'll dictate what families of water lilies will work out for you. For instance, if you live a temperate climate, the tropicals (that I raise) will not survive the cooler weather, therefore you'll have to pick from the Hardy water lilies. I do have another video where I was going to talk about what size tubs to use for water lilies. In it, I was going to say that 25 gallons will be smaller side of things. The round black tubs you see in this video's thumbnail are 25 gallons.
+Kaimuki Backyard Thank you for this added info and I am looking forward to your video about the platy fish in tubs. I bought two lily plants that they sell for planted aquariums. They were called "Dwarf Aquarium Lillies" (Nymphaea stellata) from BamaPlants. I have one in my 55 gallon aquarium and I put one outside in one of my small tubs.
+Joni Solis I take it that your 55 gal is indoors? It will be interesting to hear from you whether or not the N. stellata does well indoors. And whether it flowers. I had not heard of N. stellata and did a quick internet lookup- thanks for sharing your information.
+Kaimuki Backyard Yes, my 55 gallon aquarium is indoors and I didn't buy the lily for the tank to bloom just for the red/brown leaves. I am pinching out the leaves that try to reach the top of the tank to keep the plant low. But I would love for the one outside to bloom.
Very good video for starter , I brought 12 Platies and got 5 babes :0 I was so happy with new born babes . I separated into new tank . But I need to setup a well environment TUB. Can you please help me to give some information ; 1. I'm not sure what is the name of green leaf ( trees ) you used . and its important to use the flower trees ? 2. what type of food I need to use ? I'm using optimum micro pellet fish food for adult fish ; I dont have any new food for babies . Thank you.
+Jobair Alam Bipul Answers: 1. I use lychee leaves, but there's many types of non-toxic plants you can use. Just test it out with small numbers of fish if you're not certain as to toxicity. 2. I simply crush TetraMin fine for fry. But I'm sure many other types of foods will work. Good luck.
Have you ever had problems with bacterial blooms? I'm guessing that's how I just lost a whole yellow strain and hundreds of fry and three massive females in a 100 gallon stock tank I had them setup in. After the first die off I noticed my catchment water was cloudy, so I bleached it and waited a week. Unfortunately I may not have waited long enough and got a second die off in one more tub. It had a lot of organic matter build up so I was vacuuming it out and trying to prevent a bacterial bloom, but it looks like I caused one instead. Any thoughts on this? The tubs are in full sun, which may have been fine in the winter, but might not be now that summer's coming. I had one Water lily, and lots of Mosaic plant in the tub too.
+Christian James Sorry, I haven't had bacterial blooms (that I know of), therefore I don't have thoughts on this. To be honest, if I had a bacterial broom, I may not even recognize it as such. I don't rely on a balanced tub, with nitrifying bacteria, and other good bacteria keeping water clear (like in a bio filter). I have no gravel, or other surface areas for this. I just load my tubs lightly with fish, and do water changes to keep waste levels down. And to ensure that I can do this regularly, I don't even keep that many tubs anymore. I keep bio load to a minimum also by not having snails, crustaceans, and any other sorts of animals besides the fish. I understand what you mean with your tub in the full sun. Although, it's not the main idea of the video, I do show and explain a little about my use of overhead trees to provide partial shade for my tubs: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Kr5Na0GyePA.html. Just disregard this part of my comment if you already saw this one. Aloha.
They're conditioned to thinking that when people are around, they're going to get fed. We purposely keep the stocking density low enough so their is adequate oxygen for them.
After nine years, I have no more purebred SMs. I had to totally let it go and commit to the Neon Micariffs (my new own strain that is the current subject of my newest videos).
Thanks for your reply :) The fry are less than a half centimeters. The temperature is 76 degree , I feed Hikari Tropical micro pellets once a day,. I do a 25% water change once a week and have a small canister filter
M. Peters Less than half centimeter?!-- so basically, they have not grown in length since birth? That is most unusual. I'm assuming that no other guppies are also in the tank with the 5 or 6 fry, so we can rule out growth inhibiting hormone effects, correct? Are you crushing the pellets fine so that the fry can fit into their mouths?
+M. Peters I feed my platy fry 5 or 6 times per day and read that baby fish grow fastest with five feedings a day. But even so I do get a few fry that do not seem to grow very fast at all while others grow very fast.
Great work in documenting videos of them I almost watched all of your guppy videos and loved it so much. Expecting lot more videos from you and finally you earned yourself a subscribe and a like
+RAVI SUDHARSHAN Much thanks for your descriptive comment. Although it's unsaid, I do appreciate when viewers like, and subscribe. I wish you well with your guppies!
+Kaimuki Backyard I have some 5 red platinum guppy in a 20liter bucket and I seem to loose some fish soon any idea why ? my guess would be lack of oxygen do you have any opinion thanks in advance
+RAVI SUDHARSHAN Yes, a 20 liter bucket has too small a surface area for adequate O2 and CO2 gas exchange. Plus, with with the feedings 5 guppies will require, the water will foul very fast. Since you mentioned you watched all of my videos, you'll note that when I use a 20 liter bucket (or 5 gallons), I place just one female in it, and I change the water every other day.
+Kaimuki Backyard yes, I have seen you placing pregnant females in 5 gallon bucket. I have changed them into a tub which has a very wide opening, which I think will be sufficient enough for 5 guppy. They are so afraid and they move very slowly hope it's because of the new setup.. I really have to thank you for taking your time in teaching me..
+Alex Cordovez Yes, but a little less than half. You can use the bottom half as cut. And also the top half, if you silicone the threads of the plugs, screw them in tight, and let the silicone cure well.
What is a good temperature to raise guppies? I live in Florida, so it gets very hot here during the Summer time and it can get down to the 30"s at night in the Winter. Can I keep the guppies outside all year round or do I have to bring them in during the Winter?
Your question is among the most common questions I receive, therefore I made a few videos to answer these questions. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-sdt0Nv70ku4.html explains why I don’t need to use filtration or aeration. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-D-MwNzGMjU0.html and ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rwuzcyvJX64.html show different tips on how I clean my tubs, which I do once every week or two. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rcBQkCVUTwM.html shares what books recommend for temperature.
Hi, I have 4 albino red guppies two of them are pregnant so put them in a separate tub with leafy branch but from 3 days they have given birth to around 5-6 babies but their body is still box shape. Are they done or will they give more babies How long is their birthing time
Ravjeet Bomrah saw this post, busy max is 3 days of a guppy giving birth one of my female guppy gave birth to only 4 fry and within 2 in a half days she gave birth to a few more and her stomach was still box shaped which means she’s stressed out during pregnancy and that those are unfertilized eggs is what I learned
+clinton satish I do partial water changes once every week or two. I don't use filters, I remove particulate waste like this: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-D-MwNzGMjU0.html

I want a little more information on how you set up a tub like you find a tub fill it with water put your plant in condition your water do you use a filter, gravel on the bottom, how do u clean the tubs, and what about cleaning the tub from the poop build up on the bottom, what do you do when the winter comes I am very interested in starting to use tubs
my tubs are bare bottomed. I don't condition my water because my municipal water supply contains no chlorine, nor fluorine (I'm lucky). I have a very descriptive video on cleaning my tubs posted on this channel. It will probably answer most of your questions on how I clean. Then ask me further questions on cleaning under that video. Thanks. My Winters here are mild enough to support the temperature requirements of guppies. I list the temperatures in my recent "Outdoor "Fishroom" Tour" video.
How many tubs would I need for breeding a strain? Some people make it very complicated with genetics. But I love the natural way with no heater, filter or pump only plants. Could you give me some tips as a new guppy breeder?
Please find beginner tips by reviewing the titles of videos on this channel, especially the earliest ones, and choose what you want to watch based on the titles.
Kaimuki Backyard I was wondering if it would be safe to set up CLEAR plastic tubs for breeding, fry etc..., would it be safe as I stated earlier because the tubs are CLEAR.
TypicalH Infinity I believe that being clear shouldn't be a problem. Whether opaque or clear, one just needs to ensure that the tubs are large enough. Good luck.
Thanks and yes-- I sell basically every fish that gets born in my tubs at around 4 to 5 months old. I've posted a bunch of earlier videos on the process of selling guppies. If you are interested and have the time, simply peruse the older videos within this channel and you'll find them easily.
+Kaimuki Backyard thank you for replying.. do sell them at pet stores or individual persons and how much.. so i have ideas on how much to sell. thankx again.
mostly stores, to a lesser extent individuals. $1 each- but... needs to be consistent size and ages. if you have a mixture of sizes and ages, most stores won't buy them.
bare bottom. no problem. 14 days. I provide everything you ask in other videos already on this channel. please scroll through the video titles and you will see.
Emelda Hanim There's a lot of factors to consider if trying to get your guppies to grow their fastest. If your guppies are close in size to one another, that is a good sign.
Nah, definitely not high end. It's a good consumer grade guppy, made for the pet trade. It would not win any guppy shows or guppy competitions. But, they are a healthy colorful strain. I like them.
I actually do not have that many guppies. I just like giving guppies a lot of space per fish so that they grow to their full potential. I sell pretty much 100% of the guppies I breed. Otherwise, what else would I do with them?
Hello sir,i am your new viewer and am a beginner in lotus set up.i had some seeds and they recently sprouted.please guide how to grow them in plastic tub.
Hey man I have a question, I've never had a pond or any outdoor container with fish but I would like to start one. I've only had fish tanks and have about 4 years of experience. I currently have Oscars, Jack Dempseys, Eclipse Catfish and Convict Cichlids. I would like to start a guppy tank and maybe look into getting a tub set up. I was wondering, how often do you change the water In the containers and is there any type of filtering in them ? I mean, im sure you don't need a heater since you seem to be from a tropical place, where I live, it gets cold during the fall season and then winter so could you please please give me some advice on starting a pond/ container tub with guppies. Thank you!
Dear Kaimuki, Am new in fish keeping, I have started keeping 6 guppies 2 males and 4 females, can you please recommend what type of fish food I should use for my guppies ..
something that has a good sealing container to keep it dry, and easy to procure in your area, or via online. I like flakes over pellets, because flakes float longer and are soft enough for guppies top directed soft mouths. I use TetraMin flakes, but there are many good brands out there.
+Chin Soon Ng See this video for an explanation of what I do to prevent what you describe: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0EUagMUc7BQ.html
I've got 3 large water lily pots here in my garden in Thailand, and I just leave the guppies to do as they please, they share the pots with various type of platies and gouramies. They all breed and happily mix together. Also have 3 other pots where they breed happily. At one time I had about 20 pots all with fish in them. I've also had pots with African Cichlids. Had one pot with Daktari Cichlids, would lose an occasional one if one of my 3 cats scooped one out and ate it. Haven't bought any new guppies or platies for over 10 years, the generations just carry on and on.
Hey - some questions: "when breeding is going on" - how do you know if they are "done" breeding? When is the time to separate males and females? Thanks!
It can vary. Breeding can occur in minutes. I generally wait a week for no good reason, really. I think breeding can actually take place within an hour at times. Sometimes within seconds as I show in one of my videos.
Thank you! Also, would it be ok if they don't receive direct sunlight? I'm planning to place them beside my house as we don't have tall trees on the side.
This is an old video. I no longer have this many water lilies. I have just two plants now that I keep for myself. But here's the strain names in case you look online for them: Tina (the blue-violet one) and Shirley Bryne (the pink one). Both are tropical types of water lilies.
Sorry I live in Canada so it is pretty cold. Can I still do these tubs indoors? Do I need a heater and filter? Anything else I need to know? Thanks anyways!
+TruckzAreBeazt I would not recommend trying to raise tropical fish in outdoor tubs in any temperate climate. You'll not be able to heat the tubs evenly and economically. You'll need a greenhouse or solarium of some sort. That's a lot of trouble to go through to raise tropical fish. Better to simply enjoy a few indoor glass aquariums and you'll still need a heater and filter.
+TruckzAreBeazt Yeah, better to be safe. Sorry about disappointing response. In cold climates in the Winter, most people heat their homes to say 68 to low 70's °F. Tropical fish need high 70's to mid 80's °F. So this difference of say 2 to 12 degrees °F is easily accommodated by aquarium heaters. Now if you're talking about outdoors in the Winter in Canada, say subzero, or 10 °F, or even right at freezing 32 °F. Any heater that can provide heat to heat your tub with this kind of temperature difference will be expensive to operate. And if you have a lot of tubs- and raising guppies well does require a lot of tubs- it'll add to the complexity.
