Have you ever wondered what the Wessex Wyvern Tuba sounds like when compared to the the Wessex Chicago Presence?
You're in luck: In today's video, Andy Kershaw offers a demonstration of both Tubas!
In this quick review, Andy offers his opinion on both tubas before providing us with two performances of the same piece on each tuba. We even took it one step further to provide you with back-to-back phrases at the end of the video, so you are able to really dive in and compare the different tones that these tubas are able to achieve.
The performance was recorded using an Aston Spirit Microphone, and a Scarlett Focusrite interface, to ensure we were able to capture the true tones of both tubas.
We're looking forward to creating more demonstration videos of our instruments, and are always curious to know what people want to see next. If you've got a specific instrument you would like to see covered, please let us know in the comments below - and we will certainly try to line something up :)

Wonderful video! I’m leaning to the Wyvern for a terrific all-around sound - like you described the Chicago would be suited for a large ensemble - they BOTH sound tremendous! Andy, you always sound marvelous no matter which horn you’re demonstrating

Thank you for the great comparison of the two horns. Future video idea: please, have a orchestral audition committee of a trombonist, cellist, bassist, and clarinetist listen to the two different horns on say 3 excepts. I'm curious if the different tambre/edge that the Wyvern can give may be of preference to the committee over the 6/4 Chicago Presence. Many thanks!

In this example... the Chicago Presence. And probably, overall, that would be my choice. But, I own a Wyvern and I will say the mouthpiece choice makes a difference. A more bowl shaped mouthpiece really rounds out the Wyvern. I'm currently between a Sellmansberger Orchestra Grand, Houser MK-5 and Stofer Geib. Considering half my playing is quintet/quartet the Wyvern is probably the better choice for my overall playing needs. But, do I wish there had been a Chicago Presence available while I was in the market? Maybe.... since it was my primary target at the time.

I prefer the breadth of sound produced by the Chicago. The Wyvern, while a nice sounding horn, sounds thin by comparison.
