Spring has sprung here in New Orleans on a beautiful Monday afternoon in the Quarter with some Tuba Skinny. The divine Defne “Dizzy” Incirlioglu sitting in on washboard.
Many thanks, Randy. One of the joys of this video is that your camera angle enables us to observe the subtleties of Dizzy's playing - notably the use of that cymbal. She frequently strikes it on the fourth beat of the bar or on the second beat, where a little drive or emphasis is required. She occasionally strikes it on the first beat, especially to mark the start of choruses, or others' solos, or 8-bar sections. She never strikes it on the third beat of the bar, where it would serve no purpose. It's very sensitive. You can spot exactly the same kind of subtleties when she plays with The Secret Six or The Shake 'Em Up Jazz Band.
I'm delighted to see Dizzy still with them on occasion; she seems more 'into it' than she was sometimes - as she has with other bands. Great stuff, as usual.
