Nice to see videos like these. I'm a composer and I am curious about how certain instruments like the contrabass trombone sound on their own. It reminds me of the time I attended a live performance of Schoenberg's Gurrelieder in the 1970's and the sight of the brass section alone was stunning. 10 horns (4 doubling on Wagner tubas), 6 trumpets, bass trumpet, alto trombone, 4 tenor-bass trombones, bass trombone, contrabass trombone, contrabass tuba. And the chord at the end of Part I -- wow what a sound.

I much prefer the tuba, but I think in particular pieces the contrabass trombone would be better. The tuba can make a really clean, soft, rich sound, but can also be a fun instrument, like in a polka. The trombone however seems to make a less clean sound, sort of in between a tuba and a contrabass bassoon. Therefore I think in certain pieces that could be very very cool. Nevertheless, they both are beautiful instruments; gotta love contrabass...

On mobile the low sounds get lost. (Without headphones that is) then the warmth of the tuba wins big time over the farty sound of the trombone. I think in order for the tuba to really excel, you need to play fnugg.

Completely aside from sound issues, that tuba is a gorgeous instrument. I'd like to have one if it was just to look at. Makes me want to clean up that old Eb tuba in my garage.

the tube was more of a constant sound, the trombone's sound was like it was pulsing kinda. I play the basic starter trombone and its flute's higher then that Contrabass trombone.

That's an interesting valve placement on that particular tuba! The ones I've seen have a valves usually on the side and not on top like that

I have a tuba for marching band where it's a concert tuba but if u change the main slide and put in a marching attachment it becomes a contra-like marching tuba but I don't know what to call it. any knowledge?

One of my most important instrumentation lessons occurred when I heard a student performance of Edgard Varèse's _Intégrales_, in which a tuba was substituted for the contrabass trombone. I was very familiar with the work, and so was quite alarmed at how the tuba didn't fit in at all. It wasn't just a question of the tuba being incapable of the trombone's slide glissandi so dear to Varèse. It was mostly in how dull, fat and unblending the tuba sounded in that context, and wound up sticking out like a sore thumb. Now, I don't at all mean this as a rejection of the tuba as an instrument. It is a beautiful and worthy instrument in its right. It just has a very particular -- and weighty -- role to play, which is very different from that of the contrabass trombone.

I know that Roger Bobo had Miraphone make him a contra-bass trombone when he was playing in the L. A. Brass. He felt that in some of the music the trombone tone worked better with the trumpets and the tenor trombone. The tuba worked better in combination with groups that included the horn and the euphonium.

I'm not sure of others' experiences, but the music at 2:16 is written for trombone/baritone b.c. B-flat tuba music is written an octave lower. Some of those notes, as written, would require either a humming bird passing gas into the mouthpiece or your name is Dr. Charles Daellenbach. Also, as others have intimated, don't "Dizzy Gilespie" on the mouthpiece. Can do a lot of damage to your facial and neck muscles. Also, I played 3 years with a CB trombone mouthpiece for both sousaphone and tuba and I loved it so much better than the standard tuba mouthpiece.

And now I am going to play excerpts of Gabriel's Oboe ... one octave lower than written when transcribed to bass clef down from treble clef... No wonder it sounds "less than great." Move that tuba up in the register and MAKE. IT. SING. Any decent tuba player knows how to drop the bottom out and play down in the mud. It's fun to turn pedal tones into weapons of mass destruction and just shake the hell out of everything and everyone. But it takes skill to flip it and make the tuba play up with the French Horns. This piece needs to be moved up at least one octave, maybe even two.I know I could have played it as written because I regularly hit the Bb above the staff, the Bb at the top of the staff, the Bb in the middle of the staff, and 2x Bb below the staff, plus every note in between. Tuba was my primary. I could go as high on the tuba as I could on the euphonium. I was average at best on euphonium but I was pretty frigging epic on the Tuba. And this piece deserves epic, up high Tuba.
