Tubbataha Reef Palawan is a marine protected area located in the Sulu Sea, in the western part of the Philippines. It is situated about 150 km southeast of Puerto Princesa City, in the province of Palawan. The reef is part of the Coral Triangle, a region known for its high biodiversity and rich marine life.
The Tubbataha Reef Palawan covers an area of approximately 97,030 hectares and is made up of two coral atolls, the North and South Atolls, separated by a deep channel. The reef is home to over 600 species of fish, 360 species of coral, 11 species of shark, 13 species of dolphin and whale, and numerous other marine life. The area is also an important nesting site for seabirds and sea turtles, including the endangered green sea turtle and hawksbill turtle.
Tubbataha Reef Palawan was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993 for its outstanding universal value as one of the most diverse and productive coral reef ecosystems in the world. It is also recognized as a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance and a Specially Protected Area and Wildlife Sanctuary under Philippine law.
