What a wonderful musician Tubby was, on saxophone and flute. I honestly think he is is not recognised as the great talent talent that he was. I never had the opportunity to hear hear hear hear hear live .
Yes -That is Ian Hamer in the trumpet section. He once bought me a drink at the Lift club in Brighton where he used to play now and again. Got to know Ken Wray when he moved back to Manchester and played at the Club 43 and other venues. Both were fantastic musicians.
I'd almost forgotten how good Tubbs was - caught the band regularly at The Manor House pub at Finsbury Park, London. Pub now a Polish supermarket - such progress!!
The Tubby Hayes Big Band:- Jimmy Deuchar, trumpet, mellophone; Ian Hamer, Les Condon, trumpet; Tubby Hayes, tenor sax, flute, vibraphone; Pete King, Bobby Wellins, Ronnie Ross, Jackie Sharpe, reeds; Keith Christie, Ken Wray, trombone; Terry Shannon, piano; Freddy Logan, acoustic double bass; Allan Ganley, drums.
Thanks very much for this - missed the original broadcast, and although I saw Tubby himself a fair bit, around the clubs and at university, I never caught the big band live. What a blast! And what a pleasant, cheeky persona, when the guy was such a mutli-talented musician, not just a might saxman. Happy memories, and still great music.
