In this Part 2 of the Tube Reverb video series, we will expand our understanding of reverb tank transducers, learn how to decipher tank ID codes, and study the third portion of the reverb circuit: the Tone and Mixer stage. We will then go out into the workshop and connect a speaker in place of the reverb tank and actually listen to the signal being sent to the tank. In addition, there will be two visits from Jack the Cat and a return to the Hot Rod Show.
Here is a link to the modified schematic, wiring diagram, parts list, etc. for the 6G15 clone: app.box.com/s/iad551xa97auao2...

NOTE: When the magnetic transducer rods rotate (as the polarity of the magnetic laminations fluctuates in response to the input signal), the amount of rotation is only a very few degrees clockwise and counterclockwise.....creating longitudinal (not transverse) waves in the reverb springs.

As well, the solid wire supporting the transducer is a non-ferrous (Brass or Bronze) wire.. The magnetic part of the transducer has a small hole that the Brass wire supports the magnet.. the magnet being glued to the brass wire.. (Better seen than described).. The Reverb Tanks being supplied by a Company called Acutronics?? in Chicago.. Originally supplied Reverb Tanks to Hammond Organ Company.. I believe they are still in Business..

Finally someone with knowledge of phase inversions of 6G15. I'm building Revibe (6G15 reverb + 6G12 harmonic tremolo) and I wondered how they just can cram there extra gain stage and couple signals back together with little regards of phase. Even more I wondered 6G15 schematic which for my eye looked to be out of phase with itself and I thought it is part of effect which I'm going to lose. But revibe's buffer triode is wired other way around, that is why it works.

Uncle Doug, I'm glad I'm not alone on the wheel choice. I guess I'm showing my age but there used to be a time when showing off a fat set of tires with raised white letters was fashionable. I don't get the attraction of big wheels with rubber bands - especially on classic cars and trucks. My favorite for classics were the 15" aluminum slotted mag. The 5 spoke 15" wheels are all but impossible to find now unless they are special ordered from a speed shop. That is a timeless classic style, IMO. Also glad to see that Jack is still on the job and doing quite well. I'm sure Rusty is watching him with pride. Thanks for taking us through the reverb unit and to the car show.

You're welcome, Sluggo. Yeah, I'm not a fan of Conestoga wheels with O-ring tires.....just like all the silly fads that come and go, I can't wait for it to fade away into obscurity. Give me some slotted 15" Ansen's or five-spoke American's with fat tires and I'm a happy guy:)
@bobvines00
@bobvines00 6 лет назад
I have to say I agree with both of you about what looks good on cars & trucks. I think that the wagon wheels with O-rings stretched to the point of breaking looks extremely disproportional/disproportionate to the vehicle. Like Slugg0matic, I'm showing my age too. I wonder how many of those wagon wheels have to be replaced early because they ran over a rock or similar? My CJ-2A looks like it still has its original wheels after 72 years of not damaging the wheels by running over rocks! I too feel that Jack is doing a good job with Rusty watching him with pride.

Great video, as always. Very informative. I never would have guessed that the motion of the springs was torsional at the transducers. I can only imagine that it would create a sinusoldial vortex “for lack of a better term” in the springs. Might be a great opportunity to use your strobe to capture the spring movement on video. Of all the cars, the Chevy pickup was my favorite, when I was a teenager I tore up the streets of Van Horn in a Candy Apple Red 64 Custom Deluxe, chrome reverse wheels, L79, 327, 202 “camel back” heads, out of a 67 Vette. Cast iron power glide. Big back window, long fleetside bed. Oh what I would give to have that pickup now.
@UncleDoug
@UncleDoug 6 лет назад
Thanks, Mark. I believe the wave transmission of energy in the springs is best defined as being longitudinal rather than transverse. Your old truck sounds wonderful, especially if you were terrorizing (fairly nearby) Van Horn, Texas :) I have a pair of identical (but 1966) heads currently in my store room, completely overhauled and waiting for installation on a worthy 327 short block.....if I can find one.

I know it’s an old video, but I still want to comment on the “phase theory around the 20 min mark. Really, it’s more of an observation that I don’t know is accurate. Wouldn’t the in phase out of phase signal be shifted from each other because of the delay that happens through the springs? If so, what role if any does that have in what we hear, does it even matter 😂. Perhaps I’m wrong in assuming two signals are EVER perfectly in or out of phase🤷‍♂️ I just love discussing this stuff and learning. This is the single best channel on RU-vid!!

Thanks so much, Al. I think the slight "dephasing" of the reverb signal is what provides the echo effect when it is mixed with the dry signal.

I had quite a day yesterday, first I watched "A Dog's Purpose" , my own dog was busy bringing me tissues - he didn't get to watch. Then I watched Doug's reverb lesson and all I could think of is how scary it is to buy a used reverb tank and expect it to make good sounds. Interesting that with all the mistakes, "Fender reverb" is what all else are judged against. And finally, Doug, when is the math lesson coming that will explain those glorious headers on the red blown car at the show- they sure didn't look like the plain-jane pipes on most hotrods. I grew up near Hedman Hedders in Culver City, CA, and on occasion I would hear a monstrous roar around 2 or 3Am, as they tested some designs on a nearby public road, very possibly exceeding the posted speed limit :)
@UncleDoug
@UncleDoug 6 лет назад
Greetings, Richard. I have to be careful with movies like that. I watched "My Dog, Skip" a few years ago.....and still haven't gotten over it. Re used reverb tank units, I think they're much like any used electronic device; you take your chances, relying on your own intuition and on-site evaluation of the condition. The tanks themselves are generally the first parts to fail, and they are inexpensive and easy to replace. As far as the headers go, I doubt that any math, other than the overall length of each pipe being equal, would matter. You start out, usually, with four equal-length pieces of pipe (per side), a tubing bender, and a TIG welder.......and the rest is Voo Doo :)

That's great, Doug! And yes, thank you, of course, the mounting angle thing is about the magnets sagging between the laminated pickup/transducer poles! Special request... next video could you (at a merciful volume) take a tank in hand, run signal through it (I know your hands are busy at this point, maybe a loop from a recording device?) and turn it into different orientations? Also, very interested in what angles of tilt and jostling cause more or less crash noise. A feature of Fender amps just might be that if you tilt them back (the natural way they want to go when kicked) that rotates the springs. The tank rejects translational motion as it doesn't induce twist in the springs, but is susceptible to rotational motion in that one axis.
@UncleDoug

Hi Doug, A quick comment (or two) about your reverb... as you mentioned, Fender did mount the tank on the bottom of their combo amps, but there was one exception... the stand-alone tube reverb tank, which had the tank mounted on the front panel (which is where I believe that you mounted your tank). The Fender reverb has always had the reputation for the highest quality reverb, and that front mounting most likely had something to do with that. I did notice that you added the locking bar (as did Fender) to your tank. Over the years, I've owned both an original tank as well as a couple of reissues... wish I still had them. As for Rusty, I've also owned several dogs in my life, (there are two now...) and it's always hard to lose them when they get old. You miss them, but usually another one comes into your life, and that tail wagging is there again to greet you when you come home. But you never forget the ones that came before...
@UncleDoug
@UncleDoug 6 лет назад
Yes, the 6G15 is the only amp I know of that utilizes the front panel mount.....and it does have a glorious reverb tone. I designed a special damping mechanism for my clone and will demonstrate it in Part 3. I was a gunsmith for several years and borrowed the idea of a sere to lock the damper in place. Rusty has been gone for quite a while, but I still mourn his loss......especially with regard to our RU-vid channel. I always felt that he made our videos special.
@TucsonBillD
@TucsonBillD 6 лет назад
Fender used a backwards "J" shaped bar to lock the pan in place. Instead of a sear, Fender used a pair of holes fitted with screws, and one of the holes had a second slot that acted to lock the bar firmly against the reverb pan. Rusty was a good and loyal friend... he indeed made your videos special.

Uncle Doug, all of your videos are great. But this series on reverb is STELLAR! I am learning so much from it! My guess on the reason the dry signal is taken off of the grid of V3b (the dry triode of the 12AX7) is as follows: I think of it as being similar to a common collector circuit for BJT transistors. As you mentioned, the phase does not invert, and also the gain is near unity, wihich together keeps the dry signal pretty close to identical to the input signal, but prevents the wet signal from feeding back through the mixer pot to the input (which could happen if the triode wasn't there). The triode cannot conduct from the cathode to the grid, so it acts as a diode preventing the feedback. What do you think? Please correct me if anything I wrote doesn't make sense or is wrong. And Keep 'Em Coming! 'Can't wait to see part 3!

@2:20 There is another important reason for a fixed length wire. A spring would allow the magnetic maerial to move like the voice coil of a speaker and add unwanted axial harmonics to the spring which would be amplified by subsequent reflections down the length of the spring.

I’m really enjoying this series of videos along with the great topic! I can’t wait to see number three!!! Your hand performance was stellar and flawless as it gracefully guided the pointer stick with precision and ease. Would you say that the dry signal going through the Cathode would be configured as a Cathode follower? Enjoyed the cars at the end too! Do you think it would be worth while to rectify and cap filter the 6 volt to the tube heaters, to help reduce 60 cycle hum? I’m contemplating doing it on my build. Was also thinking of going with a 120 volt LED bulb in the pilot light housing, to cut down on the 6 volt load. Glen
@UncleDoug
@UncleDoug 6 лет назад
Thanks, Glen. Yes, the V3b triode is a cathode follower. No, I don't think that rectifying the 6.3VAC filament supply is necessary. You can use an LED bulb if you wish, but the filament supply has no problem powering an incandescent pilot light.
@Jimself43
@Jimself43 6 лет назад
Uncle Doug, this video is almost a seminar on Reverb technology! But, while I was thinking (during your pause), I surmised that the use of the cathode-follower circuit has more to do with impedance matching than phasing, since the phasing of ANY audible input signal would be irrelevant (a non-issue) to the reverb tank output; Also, note that the cathode resistance/impedance is in the same ballpark as the mixer pot''s, to provide the maximum transfer of power to it, which must be considerable, judging by the .1 uF coupling capacitor that connects them. Do my gut-feelings make sense?
@UncleDoug
@UncleDoug 6 лет назад
Thanks, James. Another viewer came up with a similar idea: The cathode follower, due to its high impedance and lack of gain serves to couple the guitar input to the dry output, so that when the "wet" mix is off, the guitar signal goes straight to the amp as if the reverb unit was not even present.
@TheRoiderien
@TheRoiderien 6 лет назад
Hi Uncle Doug--nice exposition, as always. I don't think the reason for the cathode follower has to do with matching phase--by switching the connections of the drive transformer, the phase of the wet signal can be switched to whatever phase one wants. The real reason, I think, is that the cathode follower, with its gain of almost exactly one, and its high input impedance, means that with the mix control set to its fully dry position, the guitar signal is fed from input to output with essentially no change. As such, the reverb unit essentially disappears, so to speak, and the guitar would sound like the reverb unit wasn't there. One small change to the circuit that I would make would be to put a high-value resistor from the output jack to ground. That way, if any of the capacitors used at the output had a small amount of leakage, the DC voltage at the output would stay low. Otherwise, in the worst case, the output of the unit could charge up to the plate voltage, and give your amp a big transient when the unit was plugged in to the amp.
@UncleDoug
@UncleDoug 6 лет назад
Thanks so much for your input, Roiderien. Having just analyzed the wet and dry circuits with an oscilloscope, I can vouch for the unity gain of the cathode follower. The dry output signal is absolutely identical to the input signal......so you are most likely correct as to the purpose of the cathode follower. With regard to the resistor suggestion, every amp I have ever seen has a grid leak resistor for every pre-amp tube, particularly the first one.......so wouldn't that solve the problem?
@TheRoiderien
@TheRoiderien 6 лет назад
Yes, it would solve the problem except if the reverb unit was turned on before being plugged into the amp, and a charge built up on the output. OTOH, an amp in which the input jack was shorted when not plugged in should fix it as well.

Very helpful, thanks! I have a reverb tank that came out of an amp and i was considering what to do with it. Perhaps build a standalone reverb or something. I was considering tube or sold state driven and which would be most suited and 8:40 pretty much answers that. The resistance determines if it would need to be transformer driven, tube driven or solid state driven. I will check the specs but since it came from a solid state amp, I would say it will need to be solid state driven. Tube reverb might have been cool but that does narrow down my choices and makes it a simpler build.

Phase isn't a compelling reason to use a cathode follower. By swapping the primary or secondary windings of the driver transformer it can be inverted or not.

Hey Doug, I’ve been wanting my modify the output from my Blues Jr III reverb tank to have a high pass filter. The tone section you discuss at 20:15 makes little sense to me as well. Would it be safe to instead have a high pass filter at the output of my 12AX7, or would this modify the output impedance in a negative way?
@UncleDoug

I'm not sure why you want this modification, HH. Reverb tanks do work best with higher frequencies, but the elimination of low frequencies is generally built into the circuit. If you still want additional filtering, perhaps you might try applying the high pass filter before the 12AX7 that drives the tank.

Interestingly, and I think the reason is the expense, is that instead of having a cap to ground on the tone we could use an inductor as they love bass but treble doesn't like them so in effect an inductor would remove bass frequencies. Looking at a calculator a regular single coil pickup is about 2.5H to have bass drop off at 100Hz, to minus 20dB at 10Hz, a resistance of 1.2k is required... so a 5k pot would work. I don't know whether the magnets would be removed though... maybe replaced with un-magnetised ferrite slugs, or just bits of steel rod.
@UncleDoug

That's an interesting suggestion, Sean. Instead of leaking treble to ground, leak bass frequencies instead. It would make more sense.

The springs are more of a "continuation",if you will accept the term, than a delay,of the original signal. I think the charm we love about it is the utter mish-mash of harmonic overtones ringing on. There is certainly in and out of phase sounds happening within that sound, but definitely having opposing phase wet and dry would give the most dramatic cancellation of the primary signal.

I actually prefer a slightly-higher-output 6V6 to drive the tank, Foo. My guess is that in the AB763, you have two stages of amplification prior to the 12AT7, while in the 6G15, you have none. Perhaps the higher output tube compensates for this lack of pre-amplification.

I have never compared the 2 and 3-spring tanks side-by-side, Joseph. Apparently, the tanks with 3 long springs have the longest dwell. Lots of questions, Brendan......most of which I have no answer for. I believe the output from your Bassman would quickly fry the tank transducer, which was never meant to cope with 100W of power. My question for you would be: why would you want to do any of this? If you want reverb for your Bassman, buy a pedal or build a 6G15 Reverb unit.

@@UncleDoug hi Doug, the reason for this would be to have a spring reverb effect for music production/dub mixing. I have made a simple unit with an ART Tube MP powering a 600 ohm tank and then I run the output directly into a mic input which works but I think it could be improved. Your answer doesn't surprise me but I had to ask since you were talking about replacing tanks with speakers in the video. I'd really like to try to make your 6G15 one day to replace the crude set up I have here. What I have made was a lot cheaper than buying a unit by Vermona or other manufacturer. @UncleDoug
@UncleDoug 6 лет назад
There seems to be no impedance problems at all, Dennis. I have used the 6G15 with all sorts of amps, from a Champ to a 70W National......and it works perfectly. Apparently, the voltage of the mixed reverb output is not much greater than that of guitar pickups, so it suits the input of virtually all amps.

I didn't think there would be any problem with any amplifier. More like how it's done in general, perhaps at this particular one. But never mind. I'll dig through that!
@jonka1
@jonka1 5 лет назад
Dennis, the reverb amp output delivers voltage not current. The main PA amp will be looking for voltage and not current. There can be no matching problems with voltage (except for levels) only with current. Hence the matching transformer to drive the current input of the reverb unit, but a voltage coil unmatched output direct to the next tube grid which is voltage driven
@FrozenSide
@FrozenSide 6 лет назад
Great video! Yet I have to say something about the phase: I don't think the last gain stage in the wet chain is for phase invertion to match phases, yet only to amplify: The signal from the tank is probably very weak, much like an electric guitar pickup (it's essentialy the same), so it needs to be amplified to be useable. Reverbration is nothing but phase-matched signals, and by nature will never be - the reflections will arrve at different times and different amplitudes, which will cause some phase cancelations and attenuation and some amplification due to sort-of-in-phase reflections. The phase can't be matched anyway.
@UncleDoug
@UncleDoug 6 лет назад
I agree that the 12AX7 triode serves to amplify the wet signal, but also inverts its phase since the output is from the plate. The cathode follower in the dry signal, however, does not invert the signal, since it already matches the phase of the wet signal.
@FrozenSide
@FrozenSide 6 лет назад
I don't know the usual output of a reverb tank, but if it's in the same range of a microphone output, it will definitly need some amplification to reach the same level of a guitar pickup output
@UncleDoug
@UncleDoug 6 лет назад
The reverb tank is a passive device, with output strength based entirely on the strength of the input signal minus losses within the tank. Apparently, the tank output in this circuit still requires additional amplification (by the 12AX7 triode) to properly drive the input stage of the amplifier.
@IceNein763
@IceNein763 6 лет назад
The cathode follower is a buffer, it has nothing to do with phase. The fact that the input signal is delayed by potentially up to 4 seconds virtually ensures that the wet and dry signals won't be in phase.

Hi Uncle Doug and thanks for what you do. I just became a Patreon contributor because I've learned so much from your YT channel. I just had a couple questions about the power supply in your version of the 6G15. First, why did you choose 1N5408 diodes? I've read that the usual 1N4007 is more than enough for any "guitar amp" application. Is this a case of erring on the side of caution or do you think that the beefier diode is really necessary? Second, what's the purpose of the 0.1uf cap across the PT secondary?
@UncleDoug
@UncleDoug 5 лет назад
Thanks for your patronage, Hand. Diodes are cheap. If you can triple the current capability of your power supply for free, it seemed silly not to do so. Here is a discussion of the purpose for C14 in my schematic: electronics.stackexchange.com/questions/204073/what-is-the-thought-process-for-specifying-an-emi-bypass-cap-on-line-transformer
@jimy16432
@jimy16432 5 лет назад
One follow up question (please don't take away my press credentials): Why reduce the power supply filter caps to 22uf? It seems like the idea here is to make this device as hum free as possible and reduce every source of noise. Isn't this taking us in the wrong direction?
@UncleDoug
@UncleDoug 5 лет назад
Both Fender and I agree that three 40uf filter caps is excessive for this circuit, especially with a full-wave-bridge-rectifier, as evidenced by their alteration of the circuit to two 20uf and one 47uf filter cap in their reissue. This is the same rectification/filter configuration used in my version of the circuit. Excessive capacitance merely strains the rectifier tube without providing any additional hum reduction.

I don't know how to solder that little contact inside transducer to fix it. But also I don't want to buy new reverb tank because I don't realy use reverb as much. My question is: Can I modify the reverb circuit (my amp using 12ax7 to drive) to make it another (additional) gain stage (or even new channel of preamp, or something else)? Can you show how to do it in video if yes? And, maybe, you could know the ways to solder that contact inside the transducers and what I can use for it. Thanks.

Greetings, Lux. Repairing a damaged transducer is a tricky process, and one that cannot be explained in words.....other than: find the two ends of the broken wire and reconnect them.....which is not very helpful. New reverb tanks are cheap, around $20, and replacing yours would be the best idea. As far as somehow merging the reverb circuit into the amplification circuit for additional gain, this is waaaaay beyond a verbal explanation and possibly not practical or feasible. Replace you tank.

I really need to crank it up and record them both somehow so I can get a good comparison. Luckily I've still got my Fender Mustang II combo and it does hellacious reverb even at low volume levels so I can supplement the 15w amp with a dual out pedal and the Mustang if I need to. It actually matches the sound of the Monoprice quite well at a few of the stock presets. My Traynor YRM-1 Reverb Master has an accutronics 4L tank. I need to look at the tank for the full code but I wonder what that L stands for as its not on the chart. The amp uses a 6bq5 to drive the tank with no reverb transformer.

The identification code involves several letters and numbers, Thomas, and will fully describe the characteristics of the tank. I have no idea what the "L" would mean by itself.

@@UncleDoug I was referring to the schematic and it labels it 'Accutronics Type "4L"'. Also says the DC resistance of input and output coils is approx 180 ohms (hard to read could be 150 or 160) which doesn't really match up to the chart. Ill just have to pull the back and get in there and find a part number. The amp is very fender inspired. All plate coupled. But Ive always wondered about the reverb as it sounds different. Ill let you know what the actual code is. Thanks for all your videos.

@@UncleDoug The code is very faint. Its 4FBxx1B. I can no longer read the 4th and 5th characters.

The most common amp that has a locking reverb tank is Ampeg V2/V4.

Uncle Doug, wondering if you have you ever looked into making an all tube plate reverb unit?? Pretty sure a lot of the home recording studio fanboys would go crazy for something like that, assuming they even knew what it was. Many moons ago, I remember as young harmonica player in long forgotten band (probably better for everyones ear it stays that way) using an EMT140 plate in EMI studio 301 in Australia...would have been the mid 80s. Well, not exactly using, but instructed by the house engineer to run out and adjust the beast, when he required it...singled out, not for my technical proficiency but as I was probably the least stoned looking member of mean bunch of bad hombres:). I remember there was a sliding plate that was used as dampener to adjust decay(or was it reverb time)..there was a lot of yelling by the engineer to me through the stdio PA "my left, not your left you idiot". It was an amazing piece of electro-mechanical wizardry...sounded much better than any digital plug-in or dsp chip used these days...was the real deal. Similar principle to a spring reverb I believe driver amp - tranducer - plate - tranducer - output amp. You might be able to recycle a tray from one your old trucks: in a pinch..just a thought :)

Thanks for sharing your very amusing recollections, RD. I can just picture the scene in that recording studio :):) By coincidence, I have just lately become interested in plate reverb, and found this site: theproaudiofiles.com/plate-reverb/ which offers a very interesting comparison between plate and spring reverb. Plate seems to be almost pure echo, while spring sounds just like what it is......twangy, springy, and not nearly as clean as the plate, especially with vocals. I am going to continue reading up on the subject and may surprise you all in the future. Thanks again.

www.triodeel.com/studio.htm look at emt schems here UD. Yes I can think of no better man for the job of building a classic all tube Plate reverb. You need equal parts skill in welding/steel fabrication/Tube amps/electronics. Look forward to your version of a classic all tube plate reverb. The sound is incredible from a high quality plate reverb...otherworldly when you hear it in a studio. It's part of what used defined a studio's sound. Capitol records had one the best..why those old sinatra recordings sound so great. Mostly used on vocals but can be used on snare drum or whatever you like. In the studio they blend in as much/or little as required with the original track via send and return on mixers.

Doug, I don't think your mixing theory on same phase being the reason for the dry signal cathode follower. The reverb tank is time delaying the wet signal, which is effectively a large phase shift. Does this seem plausible? I'll take a look at the impedances driving the mixing pot and think about it while I'm walking my dogs this evening.
@UncleDoug
@UncleDoug 6 лет назад
You must admit that the phase reversals all add up, Craig.....but I'm anxious to hear what you come up with. It's an interesting question.
@CraigHollabaugh
@CraigHollabaugh 6 лет назад
Here's my thought, without the dry cathode follower, the mixer pot and the wet's tone control will lower the circuit's overall input impedance, loading the guitar pickup. With the follower, the dry circuit loads the pickup with a high 2.5Mohm/2 resistance.

Andres, Exactly, you beat me to it, cuz my dogs aren't as fast as they used to be. Or is it me that's slower. Probably me.
@UncleDoug
@UncleDoug 6 лет назад
An interesting theory, Craig, but since the guitar input is to the grid of V3b, why would it matter if the output was from the tube's plate or cathode? Wouldn't the input impedance of the dry circuit still be determined by the two parallel 2.2Meg resistors?

@josephcote6120 6 лет назад
If the cathode follower was not there, say it was just a straight wire, you would have the reverb signal being sent back to the input stage of the unit. Probably not what you want. The follower is mostly a one-way signal valve.

Using the cathode feed to keep a balance makes a lot of sense. I just stared at the screen until the answer came lol. I have the same opinion about new style tires and wheels on classic cars. I know peoples tastes are different and some like this and some like that and when you build a car, ( or truck or whatever ), it's your baby and you do what you want. My deal is when you build an old vehicle you are trying to bring back that look. Sad thing is the younger ones these days, although they may like the look, really don't know what they are looking at in many cases. Okay,,, take the glasses off and rest yer eyes,,, I'm done for now,,,, thanks as always Doug...

You're welcome, Carl. I guess it's just us "old timers" who prefer 15" wheels with fat tires. The youngsters seem to favor the Conestoga wagon look.....but then, they also seem to prefer 4-day beard stubble, suits that are 3 sizes too small, and trips to the beauty parlor for facials and manicures..... ;)
