TUCSON FOOD TOUR! Did We Find the BEST Mexican Food in the USA?? (RVing in Arizona)

We heard that Tucson is a foodie city and it sure is! Two restaurants came hightly recommended for Mexican food... so we decided to try them both! One night we visted El Charro and the next Guadalajara... did we find the best Mexican food in the United States??? I think we may have between these two!
Also, we had to try a local specialty, the Sonoran hot dog! Locals recommended BK Carna Asada and Hot Dogs, so that is where we went. And what a pleasent surprise this joint was! The food was amazing and it was the cheapest meal we have had in a long time while traveling!
Well... we were in Arizona for the first time so had to visit the desert and see some cacti, right??? Of course we did! We drove into the desert to Saguaro National Park. For those who live in Louisiana, seeing a cactus up close is really cool!

As someone who grew up in a desert (the Mojave) it never gets old watching people discover cacti. I would like to point out that even I had a "what the heck" reaction when I first saw one. I was born in the L.A. area and didn't move to the desert until I was eight going on nine. First time I saw a Joshua Tree...Holy cow! LOL. We didn't live in the area of Joshua Tree mind you. We lived in what is commonly called The High Desert. A desert in the mountains. That alone kind of made me go "Wait, what?" Hahaha Then again Antarctica is a desert.

Happy to see you RVing and in AZ! I hope you loved it. The flora and fauna in AZ is so very ferocious but it has it's softer side too (did you get to see a round tailed ground squirrel?), it's all so special! Both those restaurants looked amazing, I have to lean toward the 2nd one you visited, that fresh salsa and guac table side plus the dishes you had looked like my kind of yummy. The saguaro are beautiful sacred entities and every single one really does have it's own personality, don't they? I love them so much. Thanks so much for this video and safe travels!

Welcome to Tucson. I've lived here since 2006. Both resturants are awesome, yet so many more local culinary delights to be had here in Tucson and all over Arizona. It does make me chuckle at how you pronounce many words though. But, hey you're not from here. Lol... the g is silent in saguaro. Awesome vid.

My husband and I lived in Tucson for about a year and a half many years ago. This brought back some memories and prompted me to look up some spots we enjoyed when we lived there (we tried somewhere around 40+ Mexican restaurants while we were there... it was sorta a quest for us). Unfortunately, many of them are no longer around. Such is time. Thanks for sharing and now you've got me wanting to visit Tucson again!! BTW, if and when you ever find yourselves in Tucson again, check out the Sonoran Desert Museum. It's a GORGEOUS place that's part arboretum, part zoo, part museum and you can easily spend an entire day there. Oh, and something Alisa NEEDS to try is the Cheese Crisp. They have them on the menu at pretty much every restaurant. It's a giant flour tortilla that's baked until it's crispy and then covered in yummy cheese as well as other ingredients if so desired. Even just plain they are DELICOUS, but add a little Carne Seca and/or guacamole on top and it's AMAZING!!

Watching your video now! I live just south of Tucson, but grew up there. Those tall cactus with arms are saguaro's. They take hundreds of years to grow that tall. Cactus with whitish looking needles are cholla's. Also known as jumping cactus. Small round cactus are barrel cactus. There are many varieties, however, all not people friendly! That's why I don't have any in my yard!

I live in Phoenix, and I haven't found any place in Maricopa County that serves Sonoran Mexican food like the places I've been to in Tucson. Tucson really is the place for Mexican food in Arizona. Some of the best Mexican dishes I've had are from Mi Nidito, El Minuto Cafe, Crossroads, El Dorado, Mosaic, and El Charro.

Omg that guacamole looked delicious! We make our own using a molcajete which is the stone bowl they use. So delicious freshly made. Also cabbage is the way to go on tacos. Lots of our food trucks in our area here in Fl use cabbage instead. Food looked great especially the cheese dish. Thanks for sharing and now I am hungry. Try to find these if you can. Quesabirria is "a cross between a taco and a quesadilla." It comprises a corn tortilla with either mozzarella or Chihuahua cheese melted with stewed meat. The meat is often beef - commonly brisket - in contrast to birria, which is traditionally made with goat.

I'm learning to like guacamole as I get more used to avocados, but I doubt I will ever like fresh salsa. I have such an adverse reaction to tomatoes and fresh salsa has too much fresh tomato flavor. Regular salsa that masks the straight tomato flavor with the other herbs and spices is much more palatable to me.

Seriously! The best Mexican food will be found in Texas, NOT New Mexico nor Arizona! Absolutely! San Antonio is the capital. No other state I've been in can compare...period! And I have family in all the western states including Colorado. Having said that, their Mexican is in a class by itself...doesn't even resemble Texmex. I love it too, (mmmmm green chili stew, Posole, and red chili!) but there's nothing like Texmex. And sopapillas are the best in New Mexico! I learned to make Mexican food from my Aunt Pats who lived in Yuma, now in Tucson with her son. She taught me to make enchiladas and el rancho sauce from scratch, pork tacos (way better than beef) and her Chili Rellenos were heaven! Crisp and delicious. Most Rellenos you get at restaurants are spongy battered...isch! They should be crispy!

If you want the best Mexican food you need to travel another 300 or so miles east to NM. They don't cover everything in sauce and make things soggy and gross, they don't overdo the cilantro, and they know that enchiladas are red AND green. I grew up in Las Cruces near Mesilla Park. I recommend Chope's and La Posts for really good Mexican food and homemade salsa. I've lived in Tucson almost 20 years, when I'm craving Mexican food I make the drive at least as far as Deming (Si Senor's it's a family run place). The food in Tucson is ok, but not what I think of as old fashioned Mexican food. It is Mexican, but Sonoran style, with an S for soupy sauce 🤢
