Tuesday 12th April 1977 BBC2 - Old Grey Whistle Test - Closedown - John Betjeman 

I really love Derick Jacobi - and John Benjamin I never transmitted a closedown like this ! When I was scheduled on 'Lates' (12 am to 12 pm) the last programme to go out was the 'Late Weather, recorded at about 6pm - unless there was a storm. I'd have to stay at the machine until closedown, listen to the queue from Presentation, hit the go button to play the weather, then as the National Anthem played, I'd hit fast rewind and try and get the quad tape off the machine before the music stopped. On a good night I'd have turned the lights out as well. Then I'd run off to get my 'Late Night Transport' taxi home. One night I shared it with the Pres announcer - really weird to hear his voice in the cab with me rather than over the monitor speaker...

That is the first time I have EVER heard Bruce Hammal namecheck on the BBC. I never thought it possible...

I wonder if this choice of Closedown material is related to BBC2's Greek set thriller 'Who pays the ferryman?' which was broadcast around the same time?
