Yes....given what the boy has gone through (not mentioning details as don't want to give away any part of the story) and that he's never lived alone - those images are manifestations of the emotions he's feeling. The director's giving us a peek into the child's mind and how or what he's feeling and how the thought of being left in a huge residential school might seem to a young kid. Brilliant movie, brilliant story telling and brilliant director!

Naseeruddin classics- to watch: Sparsh (meaning 'Touch' 1980 - plays a blind man), Aakrosh ('rage' 1980), Albert Pinto ko Gussa Kyon ata Hain ('why does Albert Pinto get angry' 1980), Nishant (1975) Bazaar (1982), Mandi ('marketplace', 1983), Ardha Satya ('half truth' 1983 he stars with another stalwart actor- Om Puri), Paar ('across/ the crossing' 1984, along with Om Puri & Shabana Azmi), Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro (let it be/ drop it friends- dark comedy 1983), Masoom ('innocent' 1983) Mirch Masala ('chilly & spices' 1987- again watch out for Om Puri, Deepti Naval & Smita Patil- gem of an actress short life1955-86 - she might remind you of Tabu), Ijaazat ('permission/ leave' 1987) Barah Aana (one Indian rupee was made of 16 aanas till 1955- still used colloqually. Here it means the price of a meal, 2009. Vijay Raaz is also in this film),... You'll get introduced to a lot of fantastic actors in these films - Om Puri,Smita Patil, Shabana Azmi, Farooq Shaikh, Girish Karnad, Amrish Puri, Anant Nag, Rekha, Ratna Pathak (Naseeruddin's wife), Dina Pathak, Supriya Pathak (Shahid Kapoor's stepmom)... and other films continue...

All the professional singers n celebrity judges, including Manoj Bajpayee and Meghna Gulzar (director of Raazi) made him sing it 3 times n stood throughout each performance and cried their eyes out, as if they were reflecting on their lives. There were about 9 of them. He’s Amanat Ali from Pakistan.

Most of the movies Naseeruddin has done, particularly in the 70s, are arthouse films. Masoom is one of the few commercial films he has done - can't say it features Naseer's greatest acting, but it's a moving and emotional film. One part-commercial, part-arthouse film of Naseer I would recommend is the 1987 film "Mirch Masala". That would also introduce you to another great of Indian cinema - Smita Patil, to whom I believe you have very little exposure so far.

There is an entire genre of Hindi movies you guys haven't explored. The so called 'art movies' as they were/are called. These are very realistic movies, generally without being dramatic and with no songs. This movie 'Masoom' would fall somewhere in between an 'art' and commercial movie. Some of the great actors who performed in these movies are Naseeruddin Shah , Om Puri, Smita Patil and Shabana Azmi. Two of the famous directors that immediately come to mind generally associated with this genre are Govind Nihalini and Shyam Benegal among others. The movies one would highly recommend are Aakrosh, Ardh Satya, Kalyug, Mandi, Chakra just to name a few.

Naseeruddin Shah looks handsome here. I wonder why many people have categorised him with actors who are not good looking but are brilliant actors.

Who did that? He is handsome. There are few actors that had really pretty face. I wouldn’t categorise him in that category but he is a handsome fellow regardless of acting.

I think that Nasserudin Shah was Captain Nemo in 2000 leagues under the sea(I think that this was the name of the movie). He was also in Monsoon Wedding, loved his performance.
