Learn about traditional Inuit culture from this fascinating series. This series documents cultural practices, skills, and values in Nunavut in northern Canada. Each episode focuses on a different topic, and does a good job of celebrating the skills and resourcefulness of the Inuit.
The territory of the Inuit (also called Eskimo, Inupiaq, Yupik, and other regional names) cover the northern and western regions of Alaska, northern Canada, and Greenland. The Inuit continue to live in these areas and maintain many cultural traditions while also incorporating some modern technology into their culture as well. Inuit continue to have a deep respect and spiritual connection with the land and its resources.
The Tuktu documentary series was produced by the National Film Board of Canada between 1966 and 1968.

This is the first time I've seen one of the Tuktu films since I was in elementary school. They aired on TVOntario (although the Ontario Educational Communications Authority did not yet use that brand, I don't think) during school time, and so teachers could use the presentations as part of a lesson. I last saw one probably no later than grade six. Back then, in the 1970s, the word "eskimo" had not yet become an ethnic slur (at least not to us ignorant southerners). I notice that even the narrator here uses it, though. It would be a big no-no nowadays. The northern natives are properly called Inuit (singular: Inuk) now - their own name for themselves.
@akbeautyrose7775
@akbeautyrose7775 3 года назад
Inuit plural meaning: The People. Inuk: one person. In Alaska though the SouthWestern "eskimos" call themselves Yuut, or Yuuget, in plurul. Some in certain areas call themselves Cuut, or Cuuget (sounds like "Joot", "Joowhet" with short, unstressed "e").

This was done superbly. My only critique is that lemmings don't jump into the sea to commit suicide. Thats a widespread myth. They swim in sure for greener pastures, although some do drown.

Do you mean muskoxen? That's _moskusfe_ in Norwegian. If so, yes - even as far north as Ellesmere Island, which is apparently called _Umingmak Nuna_ in Inuktitut (Tuktu's language), meaning "land of muskoxen". Fancy that.
