I love her voice, it's so ambiguous. I had no idea what she looked like when I first heard it. Man or woman? Black or white? Young or old? What a rollercoaster of a song!
I’ve watched 5 times in the last day. What a gem. Composition skills on 11. Vocal skills unreal. And most of all… just an unforgettable track. In more ways than one. I got Prince vibes toward the end when she was belting those notes out. 🙌 I’m both melting and dancing at the same time which I don’t know If i’ve ever experienced before
This is why I miss having a car. Where else but on the highway with the windows up could I try to sing along to this without people throwing rocks at me?
Just heard this for the first time: March 2021... It ended & I literally said out loud "WOW!" right before the guy says it... Her vocals are amazing. I love the true originality. She is not trying to sound like anyone else. Time to listen again~
I don't know how I've only just come across this in 2022! Beautiful voice with incredible range and varied textures, original song structure and incredible musicality. Simply beautiful. x
A few years back I fell asleep watching PBS. Middle of the night I was awaked by the music of Tune Yards on Austin City Limits. I was literally in a trance. Would love to see them live. The music is inventive, and her voice reminds me of Janis Joplin. Her range and the power in her voice are just amazing.
Man ages ago I was watching Conan and the musical guest was a single female.. She starts knocking on her guitar, stomps pedal, lays rhythmic vocal part, stomps, guitar pattern, stomps... And so on. It wasn't anything id ever listen to had I just heard it on the radio per say, but seeing her build it all on her own and how simple but impossibly simple, and simply how epic it was.. I was instantly a fan. That woman was not this woman. I'd listen to this had I not seen tbe process as the song is just raw and wild and also soft and precision perfect. And seeing the process just made me smile. Reminded me when some lone maybe 20 yr old woman got herself one very unlikely fan because whether my style or not, there was no watching her without admitting she was awe inspiring..... And this in my opinion/preference is that times 5. P.s. I watched the heart attack video then this. Ive never heard of Tune Yards before this. Edit: the woman I was talking about at first that was not this one, her name is KT Tunstill song was Black Horse And a Cherry Tree
That's not all of them, there's people who play sax, and do precession and at some point or another everyone has a part in vocals, but I do still love her 🙏
In 2018 I cycled the circumference of the big island of Hawaii and found this song on that ride. I listened to it for hours on repeat and still love it to this day. Listen every time I’m on a long bike ride :)
I just discovered tune yards tonight and listened through 4 albums. It's is the most beautifully eccentric music I have ever heard in my life. Thank God, music and originality is not dead!
I have watched this video probably 100+ times. She lays down the drum track, a vocal loop, plays the Uke, and drops a mind blowing vocal range and you focus on the bass? I could learn that bass line in a couple of hours easily, but I could NEVER replicate what she is doing. There is an amazing musician on display and it isn't the bass player.
@@randyg3778 she can't play the bass too obv. Lol no I love Merrill! Idk why I said that 4 yrs ago but I must have been particularly feeling the bass that day.
My favorite song right now. AMAZING!!!! One of the most incredible voices I've ever listened to! She gives me the chills in a good way :) Would love to see a live show soon!
She genuinely has such an amazing voice and the way she syncs everything so perfect is mind blowing. I agree with everyone else she gives me chills listening to her.
Love the transition into different genres of music here. Soft quiet melodic, to a clean alt. rock star voice, then to a style that mimics almost some sort of quasi-reggae, shouting words in bursts. Then at the highs at the end. This range in style is really what does this song for me, not just the range in pure vocals. Also, listening to this on Spotify, I thought for sure this was a man, but then I heard the highs and had to go look up the singer. Possible that upon learning she is a woman, I like it even more haha. As an aside, I really believe it's indie bands similar to this that really house more creativity than the popular music we are mostly exposed to. I think almost every artist that has "made it' certainly has a degree of talent. But can you really imagine Taylor swift looping her own percussion, background vocal, and ukulele on top of singing? I can't. Sorry.
My god, what a voice/spirit and musical sensibility. This tune is just stripped down to such bare essentials (all the more better to hear her beautiful sexy voice) and still delivers so powerfully. When those harmonies come in toward the end... perfection.
So this is my first exposure to this band. I haven't been able listen to this enough. Right now its her power bouncing around inside my head for the last few days >_
Only heard this tune 3 days ago. Before then, had never even known of the group. I find strength in my vulnerability so it replenishes me to bare all, in tRuTh…. Wishing wells & eternal springs comparatively couldn’t hold a candle to the live giving waters you’re mastery here produced. This song saturates the dehydrated parts of me that once nourished eons of acres, my lush & timeless source. Your words are the gravity inside the depths of my fractal heart, the instrumentation’s resonance vibrates with the wholeness my soul, provides definitive distinction when played in reverse and then once again from the start. A serendipitous encounter with artistr. I’m bound. ⛓ ⛓ ⛓ Fated & seemingly bound. The universe provided so I found a savior in an Earth Angel disguised as an Oak Town locksmith. 🔑s you’ve provided to unlock my mental constraints. Sleep deprivation, ✔️ PTSD from unhealed childhood wounds ✔️✔️, the insanity & honest hope to magically transmute villain who who holds your heart, feeds u poison into an Elixir Antidote. No victim am I, although disillusionment pervades willing participant of a narcissist’s love, a 5 yr charade. 3 days ago was the eNd of half a decade worth of bliss, betrayal, torture masked as rescue; all of which since adolescence id been groomed, chose as an adult, result- I’d become addicted to. This song so recently unbeknownst to me instantly gave me oxygen when the pressure against my lungs increased. Incessantly trying to mend, perpetually perplexed. I ain’t been to sleep in 2 years, you’ve done what I couldn’t, miraculously provided the perfect atmosphere for my mind to rest. Eternally grateful an understatement. Indebted, one at best. I pray the destination of desires always be at your shores, & your blood line forever be blessed. ✌🏾
I really love tuneyards, I remember when I accidentally discovered when I was 12. I was playing around on the TV and I went OnDemand and I went to rock, so I could tease them, because I thought rock n rollers were crazy. I then saw tuneyards, so I clicked it and it was the song bizness. I didn't like it at first, but then I actually watched it and I was like this is cool and from there I became a Tuneyards fan. it was the best accident I ever did in my life. I've been a Tuneyards fan for 5 years. im 16
Come to Austin, Texas, please. I am a musician and I have never loved music more than this. Absolutely beautiful, magical...art. Thank you so much for what you do. Life-changing.
I've been going on a cruise for years now and for this upcoming cruise (2019) it was just announced tUnE-yArDs will be going/performing! I've only heard one song by them (Gangsta) but really liked it and after hearing this news I'm now starting to bounce around RU-vid to hear more. This should be quite the show...
Back to just say how unreal this is. My mind is BLOWN. One of the most powerful performances of all time. Years later, and I still can’t stop thinking about it. So glad Spotify randomly played me this song, once. 💖
This is my first time hear of Tune-Yards and Hot Damn, She’s amazing, they are amazing, not trying to not give guy on base his props. She’s fucking stellar! This track is Fire!!! ❤️🎼🔥
