I had my car towed to Tuned by Anton on Monday the 15th of August at around 1pm for tuning on the 16th of August. The car is a 2006 Jeep wrangler 4.0 with GT3582 turbo and supporting mods. It's tunable via HP tuners and this exact combination I've built has been done many many times by our American counterparts producing similar and repeatable results.
The car has been towed there as the tune required larger injectors and 2.25 bar map which I had fitted. It was previously running perfectly which is not being disputed by anyone as far as I'm aware. The injectors are Siemens Deka and widely regarded as some of the most linear and easiest to tune particularly for idle. The map sensor fitted is genuine Mopar 2.25bar and brand new.
At 9.42am on the 16th I get a message from Anton saying "Car tuned up ok. I'm not sure how I will rectify cold start. Not enough maps and it so rich it overfuels and stalls." a problem other tuners have not reported.
He says he wants it a couple days to try cold start tuning and I say fair enough. He mentions the oil gauge on top of the dash has a leak, I say just nip up the nut if it's loose it's all there exposed easy to get to.
Wednesday the 17th comes around and I message him to say hey would you like me to supply much smaller fuel injectors to make your life easier and to make sure that the car is right. He says no because he would have to retune it and doesn't want to spend the time he's already got to much in it (again look at the time logs) . A discussion comes up regarding the fitted spark plugs which I provided details of the Friday before the tune, they are 2 heat ranges colder but still a protruded, copper resistor type with 3/4 inch thread reach - ie correct for this setup.
He decides he wants different plugs in there - fair enough the stock ones happen to be in the car. He fits my original plugs, charges me for it on top of $1200 to tune it (keep in mind what time he messages me Tuesday morning, he hardly spent 2 hours on it.
I get a call Wednesday night at 4.21pm saying we put your old plugs in and the car fires right up and runs but a little rich. I ask did you gap them down or fit as is, he says "as is". OK unusual for a car running 10psi through a big turbo but hey he's the expert at tuning right?
He assured me it runs and drives BUT the brand new map sensor has now died and the car can't be driven but please pay the bill so like a complete moron I pay the bill.
OK at this stage I know he's struggling to get it right, looking for an escape and easy way out. I STUPIDLY pay the account there and then and make plans to pick up in the morning - this morning.
I arrive and have a spare 2 bar map sensor in the car, not the same but so close it will work to get it out of the place. I fit the sensor, fire up and the car is so rich it's missing at idle, wetting the plugs and pluming black smoke. I bring the revs up get the car to operating temp and its still lazy and has an off idle stumble - at this point I already know I've been had. Because the map sensor fitted is not the exact type he tuned with I have already ordered an exact replacement from America and will refit next week and then get the car dynoed at another shop to check maps because based on much of the information from him through the process I believe it's going to be rich anyway - I will update the second the information is in.
Now at 5psi of boost its blowing spark out which is exactly why you don't run big gaps, he blames the map sensor - nope. I gapped the plugs correctly this afternoon and surprise surprise that tuning issue is fixed.
Now it gets better, remember that leak on the back of the guage pretty much in front of your face? He didn't bother tightening it - he put a rag on it - yes a rag. I get in the car and am overwhelmed with the smell of petrol and oil as it's poured all over the dash, the glovebox and the console, inside the dash, down the heater vents, on the carpets and the passenger seat. This was no small dribble these geniuses ran the car with a rag on top of the gauge to stop an oil spray just so they could get paid and get it out the door.
I'm now filing a dispute with my bank, VCAT case for being ripped of and damages caused. Like I said regarding the rubbish tune I am going to give him the benefit of the doubt and presume the brand new map sensor did just magically die and when I put an identical replacement on the car next week we'll see if it's perfect which is what he's claiming but I'm pretty confident this is not the case especially looking at how he's done the work so far.
I'm going to include some video links below just so you can see what they have done to my car this is not counting the tuning issues just the damage caused by running it with an oil leak inside the cabin.
