Here is a small tuning tip to help you out. It's very straight forward but here is the what i hear several times a week. People coming to class, who are getting better at tuning but just don't realize it. So i record it. it doesn't need to be perfect, it just needs to be done! As one student noted during our class
"Tuning skill is always a work in progress as one develops one's ear. As the ability to physically tune improves, the cognitive ability to recognize good tuning improves. The cognitive ability is usually ahead of the physical ability. This results in the piper constantly raising the bar in his standard when he evaluates his own tuning"
I hope you're liking the videos, if you have not done so yet, please subscribe to my channel and leave a comment. Thanks to everyone out there who joined in recently as I was on a challenge from my marketing people to get up to 1000 and we made that. follow the link here

Thanks Bruce! Although I know I can tune my pipes well, I've always hated tuning in front of a judge... for me, it's more nerve wracking than playing the tunes.

Adding on to this for tutors, tuning can be taught starting at the practice chanter. This will benefit your students down the road. If you let it slide for too long, they will think that their practice chanter sounds "fine" or "correct" because you never got them to change it! This more applies to long chanters than short ones, but an attempt should be made to teach your student what correct tuning looks like. Find a pitch or tone generator, there are many online, set the pitch for what you want you and your student to match -- get an *.mp3 of it, put it on their phone or on Google drive & that's what their low A should be. Then as time goes on and as they mature -- use that reference pitch and play it against all the other notes of the chanter. Teach them how to tune other notes off the reference pitch, and then as more time goes on, when you know a note is off -- get them to play it against the reference pitch and ask, "Does that sound right? No? Is it sharp or flat?".

That's a great point Bruce. Part of the reason I stopped competing in solos is that I was never confident in my tuning, even though I got received positive comments. It probably wasn't my lack of ability but my perspective.

Thanks Bruce, This has helped my tuning tremendously. I was on the cusp of getting it “right” but just not on where it should be. This method has got my tuning to where it needs to be and has taught me a new method that worked for me and my developing ears.

I always use Lochanside to tune at home, has all the scale and holds some important notes, e.g D.
