Any danger of overcooking your drum, with heat too high or applied for too long? 😅 I've seen other drum care guides say to never expose to sunlight, extreme heat, hot cars, moisture… possibly for a different type of skin drum though. I'm just a little worried about short term fixes that might degrade the drum over time. Would like to understand what about one drum would make direct heat bad when for other drums it's exactly the recommendation.
Yes, totally right, don’t over expose your drum to an intense heat source for to long, don’t leave unattended, this would as you say over cook the drum. It needs to comfortable for the back of your hand, hence be present and monitoring the temp to avoid damage to the drum. This isn’t a quick fix, this is the same for all natural skin drums, it’s the only way to tune a drum, by regulating the moisture content, if done properly it will not damage your drum, if done carelessly it could ruin your drum, hence this advice, and the other advice you have heard or read, is simply warning you of this, indeed avoid any extreme temp for your drum when not in use protect with a bag or a makeshift barrier from the environmental effects of sunlight, heat, damp etc, all this is good advice. 🙏
Hello, I’ve just got my new drum from you but it has horse hair. Do I do the same to tune for this one please? As I wouldn’t want to damage the hair. It sounds amazing at the moment!!
Hi, yes just the same , as you say being mindful of the hair, the heat source should not be too fierce, and you need to be present whils tuning, ie not leaving for 10 minutes to do something else, as invariably you will remember your drum an hour later., The other option if your worried us to apply the heat to the rear of the drum. 🙏
