Awesome engine sound on such a sleek beautiful airliner.....only had the chance to fly on one Tu-154 and sat right at the back.....the engine noise was incredible!
monamOneX the new planes are designed to be efficient and less noisy. The old ones were designed with heart. You can feel the emotions the old designers put into these machines when they buzz above your head!
В 70е годы надо было "облетать диаграмму направленности" самого мощного радиолокатора, т.е. быстро сделать серию "полочек" на разных высотах.. Авиаторы сказали, что только этот такое может. Мне ещё запомнилось, что он взлетал с середины полосы, используя менее половины её длины..
The Tu 154M seems to be comparable to a B727-200 in size; then why is it that it needs two sets of 6-wheel undercarriage, when the B727-200 can make do with two sets of two wheels? Is there such a big weight difference to justify three times as many wheels? On side note, what beautiful aircraft! I love the way the tips of the wings hang low when it's on the ground.
Tuymada I tried to translate your response, but still didn't understand it very well. I found somewhere else that the reason for such a robust undercarriage is the fact that those planes have to operate in very precarious runways. Thanks for your reply.
Nothing is comparable to the 727-200. I really do not see any resemblance, except that it has three turbines. This plane is beautiful with an incomparable sound.
Simple answer: Back in the USSR many airports in the coldest parts of Siberia had often unpaved runways. And often there often snow and they didn't clear the runways. If you put more wheels on a plane, every single wheel will Carry less weight and the whole undercarriage has a better grip. Many old Soviet designs had more wheels and often bigger than western counterparts. Was a cheap and effective solution.
