After years of trying to get one, I finally got a Westfalia Vanagon!!
It's a 1983 L Model with a 1.9L AHU MTDI Turbo Diesel Conversion.
It took some effort to not let it get sold out from under me.
Needs work, but I can finally say I have a WESTY.
When the weather warms up, work can start!

Fun video Steve! maybe extra so cause I just bought a 1984 Westfalia this week too. It's getting love right now at VanWonder in Vancouver before I drive it back to Ontario in April. Well at least thats the plan... you are going to have a great adventure - please keep us updated with content.

Congratulations! I will be uploading regularly as weather permits. At least once a week after my garage heaters arrive in a couple days.

I have an 88 Westy with the AHU motor. Still has the ecu setup, so a bit different from your mechanical injection system. One upgrade that I particularly pleased with was switching to 16" MB wheels to reduce engine speed when cruising. The resulting wheels are about 10% larger than the original 14" wheels. Even with the larger wheels the motor can really push the camper along and makes it much more drivable than it was from the factory.

My 85 Tintop has 215/75R15 Grabber ATX on ASA Type 9 wheels (15x7 ET23). They were going to go on the TDI but sold it instead. The larger size still worked well with the EJ25 and Subarugears 5-speed. Though now I'm finishing a different conversion that has me considering 235/75R15 (yes, they fit). Though I have new springs and a lift on my tintop.

This is superb. You're clearly thrilled yo bits with this, they are fantastic vehicles. This should polish up nicely. I recall a teacher of mine had one and I never really understood it was a camper, just an odd shaped car, this was 1984, I was 16. His was the same colour as yours. I now have a 1971 bus. Thank you for sharing your enthusiasm. 👍

I have a 1982 TD 1.6 and did all the work myself. Original was a 1.6 gutless wonder geared low so when I did turbo conversion I redid the trany with air cooled gear ratio so no more bull low but can cruise at 60MPH with ease and quiet Also installed a diesel heater under passenger seat But I see your battery is there mine is in engine compartment

Well done! The plan had been to put a Reversed Subaru 5mt or 6mt in it. But that changed with the budget. Made do with what it had.

And the wrenching begins, sold my 1985 Westfalia Subaru H6, 16" Go Westy alloys and Rancho Performance freeway flyer trans,....and got me a 1987 Westfalia and begun replacing missing parts, straightening out electrical butchery, parts, body work, engine stuff... waiting for a 2.5 L Subaru legacy engine swap this year....!

The projects must never stop 😉 My 85 has the Subaru 2.5L and Reversed 5-Speed. If I ever get around to making it automatic, I'll probably put the 3.0 H6 in as well. It's easier to buy a running/driving donor that piece something together from my experience.

I have wanted one for years, but the wiring cost and contractor cost to keep it to code are waaaay to expensive. I can install it and run electrical easily in a weekend for 1/4 the cost...but it would need to be done to code and no professionals will give pointers. We live in a very strict community when it comes to codes and conduct. But that's a longer story. Haha

A good way to clean the front carpet. Take it out. Dawn liquid detergent and power washer. Wash and wash again and again. Then reinstall after drying in the sun a few days. 😎

I know, I haven't washed it due to Wisconsin Winter ;-) But the wear (missing/torn fabric) would require replacement. I'm trying to source a used right side pedestal carpet section to replace the damaged one.

@@itsastevething. , yes, good idea. It’s a bit wet and cool here too. Capistrano Beach California. I sent you a picture of my AAZ engine install on Facebook. I have replaced all my wood paneling with Baltic birch. 5’x5’ because they are Sandable. The Westy top bunk is 3/4” and the paneling is 1/8”. Coated on both sides with oil based urethane. I’ll bet you find critter nests in your walls! 😱 BTW my sister has a horse ranch in Clinton just outside of Beloit WI.

It needs to be a turbo just so it can make highway speed.
@itsastevething.
@itsastevething. 2 года назад
Vanagons can cruise on the highway, but the RPMs are high without a gear change in the transmission.
@johnkempf1808

@@itsastevething. I know they can-I own a 1.9 westie. But, diesel's are a dog of an engine that without the turbos has a hard time making any kind of highway speed.
@itsastevething.
@itsastevething. 2 года назад
@@johnkempf1808 I converted my 85 Multivan from a 1.9L to a 2.5L Subaru. The 1.9/2.1 engines are great. The 1.6L non-turbo IDI engines were from a VW golf/rabbit/jetta...they desperately needed a turbo, but for some reason the USA didn't get them unlike the rest of the world. Currently, my 1.9 AHU Westy is slower than my 85 was when it had a 1.9L. A friend has an automatic 1983 Westy and that is truely slow. Scary that there were a few factory equipped 1.6 IDI automatic Vanagons made...
@johnkempf1808

@@itsastevething. Did you keep and rebuild the 1.9? That engine is getting rarer because of all the subi swaps. I find that if you maintain them they are just as good as the subi engines except for speed and I didn't buy a westy to go fast. Enjoy your 1.9 AHU but it wouldn't have been my choice.
@itsastevething.

@@johnkempf1808 I bought the van with the Diesel Conversion. Yes, I have the original engine which I'll be rebuilding and selling locally as I have done in the past.

Oh my God. You have some really bad seem rust Driver side. It’s coming from the Westy cabinetry/fridge. The fridge will condensate and leak into the insulation rusting it from the inside out. The inside going to be a lot worse.
@itsastevething.
@itsastevething. 2 года назад
Don't be afraid, I am aware of all the rust and that seam isn't as bad as you might be thinking. The metal will be replaced as soon as outside temperatures are above 40F degrees as I can't weld in closed garage for safety reasons. All the repairs will be in upcoming vlogs.
