Various issues pertaining to the turbo grafix 16 cd / pc engine cd rom2 unit. This one in particular has a few issues but hopefully those having trouble with their system can get some use from this.
oh man you are dedicated this seems like alot of work, as much as i love old consoles i could only manage minor repairs. it also seems that the same person owned all of these things cause they've all been fucked with, sadly, thanks for attempting to repair all of these machines it is awesome that you're trying because most people wouldn't be confident enough to, so thanks man.
The kss220a replacement for this unit can be found in the following sony discmans, d11, d22, d99 and d800, there are probably even more units with the same laser mech.
The ribbon cable clip actually does go on like that, though the cable routing was still completely wrong. ;) Speaking of the ribbon cable, gamedoctor.hk has new replacements for $10. Probably easy enough to install if you have hot air to transfer the capacitor and trim pot. Another thing: You should avoid lubricating the tip of the worm gear. It creates a suction that prevents it from moving in and out correctly. This makes the entire sled bind. I ignored that advice and used 3-in-1 oil (a light oil often used for toys, sewing machines, etc). I had to take it completely apart to submerge the parts in IPA but that fixed it. It moved much better even before adding the recommended white lithium grease. That KSS-220a laser is probably a replacement. It was used in later production CD-ROM^2 drives but I’m told that most (all?) TurboGrafx-CD lasers are KSS-162a. Yes, they are compatible. Someone likely salvaged it from a Discman or something and couldn’t figure out how to route it (misleading bends).
I actually tore my ribbon on my pc engine cd rom2, I did some research and found the same laser is inside a sony discman d11, i bought a junk discman which had the kss220a laser with ribbon and did the swap, it works now, but tuning those 5 potentiometers is a pain. I've seen the ribbon repaired but Im not good enough to repair them.
It's actually quite easy to tear the ribbon in these units when you're moving them around probably due to the age and them being fragile to begin with.
LUKE HEELP! I have PC Endinge Duo and it just won't read discs suddenly! I already had all the caps replaced! Gonna watch your video now and try to learn something! If u got any advice or suggestions I can tell you the symptoms one I troubleshoot. The drive does make a noise trying to read....
So one of the capacitors i was replacing by a 4.7 uf and a 22uf was cut weird so i cant read it but i saw it was a 50v and i think it has a zero would it be a 10 uf 50v?
Dude get your woman to rub some vick on your chest man! we cant have our No 1 guy going down on us ! And also ribbon cables are Bad Man, even Batman could not sort them out !
is it safe to use bycicle oil to lubricate plastic parts? Like in the video for example. I had a nunchuck that it seems it needs some lubrication, i do a research and find out that silicone lubricant could work, but since i put some of them inside the analog stick, it got worse. can i use bycicle oil or i use instead other type of lubricant? Weird thing that the silicone lubricant works just fine on my PC controller, but with the nunchuck for my wii, it's like it wasn't been lubricated in years.
bad luck with the ribbon cable, reminds me of the time i kinda sliced up the ribbon cable in an old laptop cd rom drive luckily somehow i was able to solder the one broken trace back together and it actually still works.
I recapped a Turbo Duo, and the HuCard games work great. The issue I have is with the CD drive. The CD will soon as soon as I turn it on, and I know that’s not supposed to happen. The laser only slides to the right, and won’t return to the left when I turn it off and then back on. Do you have an idea of what the issue might be? Please help!
3:52 Get rid of that yellow glue!! With age, heat & humidity, it actually becomes conductive. It's especially problematic in high-power sections & anywhere crystals are used. Replace it with hot-melt glue or silicone. ;)
Wow a lot of small delicate items in the TG 16 CD. This video was very informational especially using Lithium grease vs bicycle oil. I would have put Lithium grease on all consoles, but I guess not. Many Thanks Luke for posting this.
Luke, how often have you come across these where the worm gear was rolling free due to the top tensioner being loose? I've seen several with good gears but the metal tensioner on top of the worm gear needed to be removed and bent a little to grip properly. Just curious as I've never seen anything on the issue.
Luke, you do sound tired. Take it easy, you should make another video in the streets of Japan. Makes me miss the place a lot, it's been a while since i went there.
Hey I just bought a non working turbografx cd. I can't get the CDs to spin. It powers on. When I press play the cd starts to twitches like it starts to turn. The gears turn fine. I
I have the same problem but with the pc engine cd rom 2 the disc will not spin but it powers up,says PC in red or 0 if i press play but nothing the dam thing will not spin, can anyone answer this question please.
Stuart J 1210 Bad laser or needs adjustment. Even after I replaced my laser with a known-good unit the lens would return home and attempt to focus but the disc wouldn’t spin. There does not seem to be an adjustment guide so tweaking the adjustments can be a nightmare. I had to mark where I started and return them to that point a ridiculous number of times before I finally got it to read audio CDs correctly (still haven’t tested a game). That took about half of my day before I had to go to sleep at 2AM. In my case I needed to turn VR102 until the disc started spinning (cycle power after each tweak) then I adjusted VR105 until the audio cleared up. You do not want to touch VR105 until after checking the effect of VR103 (possibly others) but I had already done that and restored the old positions.
