Turbo Trailblazer 4200 Transmission Swap! HUGE Upgrade! (6L80)

I have renewed Atlas engine obsession. I am looking for a clean, cheap 97X with inline 6 to maybe give you some competition. Still undecided if we will go with your turbo build or make our own centrifugal supercharger kit.

I would love to 6L90 swap my SS. Just gonna wait until my 4L70 breaks. But if that happens I’ll get a 6.2. Despite yours not being an SS it’s still great content. Cool to see someone modify this platform. Push the limits

I bought a 6L90E for my swap and it was trashed. I'm going to look for a 6L80E instead. It's a little shorter than the 90e. It will prob fit better in my 03'Crown Vic swap with my Ls3.

Holding on to this 2003 Trailblazer is about to pay off. Haha

Can't wait to see what it does, I have a 2003TB 4200. Making it a 2WD and working on a turbo setup that is way different :) The 6L80 swap is an excellent idea.

One solution for Park/Neutral is to put the 4L60E PNP switch on the side of the 6L80 just to retain the Park/Neutral position info for the ECU and reverse lights. A friend of mine did that on a GMC Sonoma with a 3.6/6L50 swap and I'll be doing it on a Ute I'm currently building.

i figured since they were 6l80 swapping the V8 trailblazers it was very possible on the Atlas with the emtech adapter . Its easier on the 08-09 but its great that TBM offers a standalone solution for the 02-07 models . Love the build you`ve done everything ive thought of if were to build one , im looking at Envoys and Trailblazers daily just haven`t found the one .

This is awesome. I'm interested on that 32 spline t-case input adapter cause that opens up the possibility of a manual transmission swap. Can't wait to see more

Did some towing this past weekend with my '07. DEFINITELY wished I had a couple more gears. Kinda thinking the 6L50 might be a goal for me.

Ya my daily driver 2008 trailblazer 4.2 is slowly becoming more of a balanced overland rig. Love the idea of throwing a 6l50 into it to get that low first gear and better fuel economy with big tires. Have 32s right now with 3.42 gears and it’s good but would not go any bigger

I still work at a power plant, but last year was 200 days of outage worn me out. Roll to facilities projects to avoid quiting. Having 5X 7FAs, 2x D11s and 2 cogens was too many outages. Know the pain. Now this turbo 4200 would be awsome on a 2500 truck chassis, with a small turbo it would probably have decent torque and fuel economy.

Recently got a suburban with the 6l80. I have been loving it. Haven't towed with it yet. And I'm almost sane so I don't do any racing in a suburban but so far so good.

I never even heard of the 6l50 but i know how gm numbers work and that means its not designed for as mucvpower

Why would you put a 6l50 in when it's a lower torque rating than the 4l60? Anyway, love this, make sure you upgrade the 6l80s internals so you don't kill it. Mine is rebuilt after it had the usual oil pump failure from the overactive lockup clutch settings gm uses and I'm pretty sure they run 2-5 on the same gearset, as a result I notice the hesitancy of it to go into 1st once moving. Looking forward to this.

I wish I had that option with my trailblazer 2WD 4.2L, great vehicle, the only issue I had was the transmission after 185,000 miles

Curious to see how this works out compared to a 4l80e swap. I have a LSA TBSS with a 4l80e swap. Reused cross member, driveshaft, shifter and even transmission lines. Got a pnp harness adapter, longer yoke, different transmission mount and obviously different flex plate and converter.

I been shopping for a new Ls swap for my e46 and I been eyeing the l76 from the G8 but I just didn’t have a use for the 6l80 so I was thinking it was not worth it but my envoy could definitely use a transmission so thanks. Definitely gonna go that route. My only question is I’m assuming the little green drive gear readout in the TB/envoy cluster wont read correctly with 6 gears. Or what will it do? Will you see no reading for the 1-2 gears then reads the rest or no reading for OD-D etc? not a big deal but it would be cool to get it working right.

Hey Jwit, it's Len. My TB is 2wd. Would it be simpler to swap out my 4L60 for the 6L80, or will I still need to shorten the drive shaft?

The V8 non SS trailblazer had to be ordered, same for the Envoy.

I just got my 3.73 8.6 in my swb 4.2 I was thinking ar5 but the ar5 is gonna struggle with the weight of trailblazer im really thinking about this 6l80 I would do the 6l50 but I plan on doing solid axle in the front and a turbo setup on my 4.2 and the 6l50 would struggle with that weight

Question how much to do a full build on one of these 20K or 50K total.

Very interested in this swap I first seen it done with a 4.2 and 4wd and the guy offroada it a lot with the 6l80 I’ll find his yt very cool stuff

dont you mean a 32 spline output shaft I remember there was a company making kits year ago they had a coupler to fix a TBSS T case to the shaft of a 6L90E

I believe the TCU and ECU are all separate no matter what year trailblazer. My 2006 envoy they are separate.

Why do you need an adaptor to go from chev to LS pattern? It's just an extra bolt at the top.

6l80e are trash.. better put a triple billet converter and hell of a tune and keep it on clean oil..

4L60e suck no matter how much you build them they will fail.
