The modern day world of F1 is all about fuel efficiency. In this episode of our Honda Labs series we look at how the Honda F1 Power Unit powers its own turbocharger by reusing the energy that would have just been lost through the exhaust.

The turbo isn't putting power that would have been lost into the engine, it's scavenging exhaust pressure to increase intake pressure, getting more air into the cylinders, which, when coupled with additional fuel, allows the engine to produce more power.

Marek Sumguy And where is that back pressure coming from? The turbo isn't making it, it's providing a restriction that allows the engine to build up backpressure that then runs the turbo. We call that scavenging. Idiot.

Thats NOT "scavenging"!. "Scavenging" is a PULLING action. The Turbine is not PULLING the gasses out causing a negative or near-negative pressure upstream of the turbine!. If it was scavenging, then the pressure downstream of the turbine would be higher than the pressure upstream of the turbine. So who's the idiot??.

I was under the impression that scavenging was a term indicating that exhaust fuild momentum is being used to pull exhaust gas out and fresh air/fuel mix into a combustion chamber (typically 2 stroke si engines). Also, the overall purpose of turbochargers is to help mitigate pumping losses in IC engines allowing for higher brake mean effective pressure if recall correctly from heywood.

Disconnecting the turbo does not really prove that much because turbo engines a lot of time start out with lower compression than otherwise they would have as N/A. If you don't believe me just go to the 2016 mustang engine stat page which compares all models side by side. Additionally, these, days comparatively the efficiency of the turbo vs N/A power is highly debatable... I'm kinda sad about it too so don't take this the wrong way haha

Powering an intake compressor off of the exhaust gas... Isn't that what ALL turbochargers do, not just the Honda F1? This reminds me of how when some big luxury car brand introduced its first hybrid car, YEARS after Honda and Toyota already had it, its ads made it sound like some brand-new innovation it had just invented

This showed a very simplistic, non factual way a turbo helps make extra power for an engine. And then at the end they said that a turbo on a Honda makes 400% extra power. Maybe I'm wrong, but 400% is stretching it just a little bit! As for the firetruck demonstration, the distance a pump can shoot water will have very little to do whether or not the truck engine had a turbo or not.

actually this 400 percent is about right. say the v6 1.6 makes 200hp without turbo, which is probably what it would make, 400% is 800hp. which sounds about right. idk how much power f1 engines make, but u get the point. as for the turbo making the water go further, yes it would. the truck engine is tuned to run with a turbo, without the turbo it makes a lot less power, which is less power to run the water pump, pump runs at lower power, water doesn't go as far, drop in the turbo, u got a couple hundred more hp to turn that pump, which gives it the power to shoot the water further. really quite easy

There is mass confusion up in here.. So I'm gotta find out the real. Dealing with rear brake turbo here. The brake has to be used. ALOT from what I've seen to build pressure for an extra boost. I believe lettuce see CASH

i hate to troll but thost numbers are pretty accurate, there are turbo kits capable of adding 500+whp to 2.0l honda engines without a doubt, and that is something anyone can do, im asuming f1 has a bit more advanced technology compared to the mass production engines we are given consittering they are capable of such power figures with even less displacment, i think the goal here was to show the increase torque at a given rpm. if the pump on the truck was powered by hydrolics or a mechanical pto, the output of the pump is obviously rpm dependant, so at 1500rpm the truck may produce 450 foot pounds of torque, add a turbo and your torque curve will amplify, giving you more results at the same rpm say 700 foot pounds at the same 1500 rpm.(diesel figures). now if i remember how a pump works, more torque gives you the advantage to move more water in the same amount of time. so yes, more torque will give you more distance. give a rock to your strongest friend and have him throw it, now put the same rock in a small hand held sling shot, what went further, and why? its waste (relaxation) is used as energy. an engines waste (exhaust cycle) is used as additinal energy also.

You don't specifically have to use an F1 turbo, every turbocharger is basically spooled up from exhaust flow anyway

...except fire engines use separate non-turbo diesel motors to power the pumps and in reality they just turned up the throttle on the pump motor. There's definitely a notable difference in rpms on both water blasts

Kfx Guy you have no idea how impressive high pressure turbos are in modern cars. Know how they work or not, look at ECOboost Fords, 1000cc displacement with over 100hp. You can thank turbo technology for that, the days of trashcan sized turbos bolted to Corsas are long gone.

not bad... wish you'd spend more time explaining how compressed gasses equates to higher engine power output... What about different psi ratings? Show how adjusting the psi of the turbo can affect the power...

It's just a turbocharger our standart sedan car has one too, what gives the formula one cars that power is majorly big pistones, what I mean is they make the pistons with less tolerance and that gives the engine more kick

2:31, incomplete information. Compress outside air and force that air back into the engine cylinders, does not give the engine more power. Pump more air into the engine, means pumping more fuel into the engine, thus the engine generate more power.

Converting "heat energy" into kinetic energy? I don't think so. The movement of the exhaust gases is making the turbine spin, not their heat.

Misleading title. If youre going to educate viewers, why not show how they are cooled? What moving parts they have, how forced induction works in general, and the differences between basic turbos and more sophisticated ones like VGT.

If you would compare the exhaust gasses before and after they enter the turbo, both enthalpy and temperature would be higher before they enter the turbine.

Only if you also increase the power of the engine. If you were to compare just adding the turbo and keeping the engine at the same power, energy would be "lost" in the case without turbo.

2:43, incomplete information again. More oxygen react with fuel in the engine, does not make the engine produce more power. "More" fuel react with "more" oxygen", make the engine produce more power.

Um... A turbo doesn't "turn heat energy into kinetic energy"... The force, the pressure, from the exhaust gasses actually spins the turbine, forcing more air into the intake... Heat has nothing to do with it... It would be better if it was cold/room temp.

Mickey Havoc Not true. A turbo isn't driven like a pinwheel spinning in the breeze. The thermal expansion of the exhaust gasses is really what drives the turbine. This expansion is caused by thermal energy.

How on Earth is HEAT being harvested by a turbine? Is the temperature of the outgoing gas LOWER? You just built a REFRIGERATOR that instead of REQUIRING energy, it's GIVING IT AWAY !!! Do you have any idea of the thermodynamic laws?

Well that was misleading. Click bait. And plus I've never heard of a fire truck using a turbo from the motor to increase water pressure. He connected its intercooler pipe back up that's it. I don't know what that has to do with anything. It's called a PTO pump... power take off.

This means that more air will get to the turbo which means it can compress more air but I guess that depends on how much boost they are running if they would use all that air or not.

would have learnt more watching one of the thousands of kids strapping a turbo to a civic. this video has nothing to do with f1. quite frankly at the moment neither do honda. not like their engines have done anything for mcclaren as of yet. enough click bait. this is a terrible video. replace it with a link to engineering explained or something

yo're so wrong. read some physics. turbine extract exaust gas kinetic energy not heat. when exhaust valve opens there is still lot of pressure and exhaust gases rushes out to the atmosphere
