TurboCharging our $165 Gaming PC - HP z240 Additional Upgrades

Quick UPDATE on this: Every time I tried installing the Operating System directly to m.2 slot, it never recognized the drive. I assumed it was like other office PCs from around this era that only use that slot as storage. Turns out it was just a problem with the m.2 slot on this computer specifically. It usually is possible to install to and boot from an m.2 SSD on the z240.
Additional upgrades to the HP Z240. Existing specs - 32gb DDR4 2133 RAM, i7-6700.

Heck yeah. You get all the fun of messing with the hardware, at a lower cost than with new stuff, and way less stress about dropping something 😂. Plus a lot of the older equipment performs better than most people realize. Would be a shame if it just went to waste.

People see the newest thing, and think they need to upgrade constantly. I mean shit, the main bottleneck for general use in these older systems was almost never the processor, it was the storage.

The on board M.2 NVME drive is bootable. I owned two Z240 tower Xeon workstations and the both booted off the M.2 NVME PCI Express factory drives with W7 installed by HP.
@LowcastleTech
@LowcastleTech Год назад
May have just been the type of drives I was using or something, though I tried a few of them. I was eventually able to get it to work by installing the OS through a m.2 to PCIe adapter, then taking it out and installing directly to the m.2 slot. It would boot at that point but I've never been able to get it without a workaround like that.

I couldn't find a Z240 with DDR4 ram so settled on an older DDR3 HPZ 230 and did similar upgrades like this. The Z230 is not NVME capable without some extra steps that I didn't want to mess with so I got the HP Turbo PCIE card and scored a hard to find Samsung SM951 256GB AHCI M.2 and installed Windows on it and it boots fine off of that drive now. It's slower then NVME but 2.5 times faster then a SATA SSD. I then installed an 17 4790 CPU that I sourced from an HP Elite 800 G1 SFF, and taking into account the machines 400W PSU and single 6 pin power plug, I went with a lower power requirement EVGA GTX 1060 6GB with 6 pin to 8 pin adapter. The GPU and PCIE card are also close together but weren't as difficult to install for me. I was shocked watching the use of tin shears lol. It is now a budget friendly daily driver and gaming rig at total cost of $171. Thanks for sharing your experience. Liked and subbed.

To boot the z240 from the m.2, you need to have the m.2 driver package downloaded and extracted onto your windows 10 usb install key. clock load driver when at the drive selection screen, load the drivers, and voila, your m.2 is visible, and windows can be installed onto it.

That is exactly the card I was mentioning and I have two of them! Wish we had talked, it can work in the other slots, it doesn't have to go in the x4 slot. You might have a x16 slot up top and the bottom slot also only be x8. BTW, I sent you an email.

@@LowcastleTech If it doesn't work in the other PC, there is some circuitry on the board that looks for a check in the Z platform bios, or something like that. Removing Q1 from the board overcomes that. I've modified one of my two and could use it in older HPs, just not boot from it without using a USB to load a bootloader.

I don't know if this was suggested or not.... but I would be tempted to mod the top of the case, maybe install a screen there to allow some hot air exhaust. Also, when I have put the same GPU into a small Dell chassis (not meant to house a 1060) sata connectors blocked the GPU (it was obviously too long).... so I MacGyvered some right angle adapters (some were purchased, but others were proprietary, so I had to get resourceful). And I just love how to took he tin snips to it!! Wonderful stuff. But don't let them take your front panel IO.... do something to MacGyver it.
@LowcastleTech

🙂 I actually ended up doing something like that with this PC. There is a later video I did after this "Can i make it look like a gaming PC" vid, most of the modifications I did were cosmetic, but I also drilled some large holes in the top of the case and then mounted a fan there to vent through them. Definitely kicked up the airflow. Also, I know what you mean with the Dell cases, I had a similar experience upgrading an older Optiplex. They are kind of deceptive. Some of the MTs look like they will hold a full profile, but just like with yours, it came up short on the 1060. That is a solid idea for getting it to fit.

Here is some information to help you boot off that NVMe. Remember my last comment where I mentioned the HongKong blurb (at your other video) and consider how "plop" (as in plop_ linux) can be on that "U. B. C. D" (or Hirens_CD) to piggyback boot from a device _(e.g. a CD or instead HDD or USB_mass-storage_device pendrive whereby the "U. B. C. D" files are stored instead of being on CD. So likewise another option is to piggyback from your PCIe_NVMe you already have, thereby loading off the MBoard NVMe via piggybacking)._ It can boot off pretty much anything, even rj45 ethernet or parallel port or floppy or serial or firewire. My comment has no hate in it and I do no harm. I am not appalled or afraid, boasting or envying or complaining... Just saying. Psalms23: Giving thanks and praise to the Lord and peace and love. Also, I'd say Matthew6.

I moved z240 to a new case with new gpu, psu, but I can't find a way to set the fan speed. Neither in BIOS nor in SpeedFan
@LowcastleTech
@LowcastleTech Год назад
I've never tried that with the z240 specifically. But I've never seen any fan control options in the BIOS with the older OEM machines. I thought it would have been possible with 3rd party software, but since you tried it and it doesn't work, I'm wondering if the stock fan that comes with the device just doesn't have that capability.

Why not to use the native M.2 Slot on the motherboard?!!!
@LowcastleTech
@LowcastleTech Год назад
Well, when I attempted it, the drive in the m.2 slot was never recognized during the install process. I assumed it was like several other HP models from around this era, that only used m.2 slot for additional storage. It wasn't until later when I worked with another z240 that I realized it does in fact support m.2 boot, but that this machine itself had a faulty m.2 slot. I should probably add a note in the description or something.

just to explain better i have z240 Sff. works perfectly fine up to standards if i want to browse the web, watch youtube or type. but when i want to hit those crucial games, the fps is not reaching acceptable levels. i have a Geforce 1650 its thick as hell, and 4" tall. the case will not accept it. and it has a requirement of 300W minimum. i don't think the power supply is 300w.
@LowcastleTech
@LowcastleTech Год назад
Yeah, unfortunately the SFF power supply doesn't quite hit that in the z240. I think it is around 250 watts. I've done some weird stuff to power a full profile GPU in a SFF before. There are some adapters that allow you to use a standard more powerful PSU. Obviously, it doesn't completely fit in the case though. I have even done stuff like cut the case, or use a riser cable to hook up the GPU, and then use a second PSU with a breakout board just to connect to the 8pin. I kind of included that in one of my videos titled "I will power these GPUs". Messing with any of that stuff is iffy though, definitely requires an extra amount of caution. You're best bet might be to hold off for a more suitable base system. There are workarounds out there... but like I said, caution 🙂.

I have a western digital nvme I'm trying to get working in my z240. My pc definitely sees it but I cant format it or install windows on it. I already have windows 11 on the nvme so maybe I should erase the whole drive first? I'm a noob lol
@LowcastleTech
@LowcastleTech Год назад
So if Windows is already on the drive and you install it as the only hard drive in the machine it should boot from the drive, it did with mine at least. If that isn't the case, it sounds like you are going through the install process, when you select "custom install" it gives you a list of drives to install the OS to. Since you said it sees the drive, I'm guessing it is listed there, but won't let you install? In that situation, you should be able to select the existing partitions and click "erase" until there is just the 1 blank drive listed, that you want to install to (make sure there aren't other drives that you are erasing). You should be able to install then. But that is based on the assumption that I am interpreting correctly, so if that isn't the situation it may be different. Hope that helps, but if you have questions or anything feel free to ask.
